Blood Boil Warlock Build Guide

Blood Boil · Demon Tree · Fire AoE · Patch 2.7 · D2R

Overview

The Blood Boil Warlock occupies a fascinating niche in the D2R Warlock roster: it's the fire-damage specialist of the Demon tree, and it plays nothing like the other Warlock builds. Blood Boil erupts a demon's blood, dealing fire damage to all nearby enemies. In high-density areas — especially the Cow Level — the AoE detonation from multiple Blood Boil casts can clear entire screens. The build is frequently used as a secondary damage layer alongside the Summoner Warlock: your Summon Defilers chain and cluster the mobs while Blood Boil erupts the clustered group.

As a standalone build it's fully viable but faces the same fire immunity problem as other fire builds in Hell difficulty. B tier is honest: excellent in the right areas — Cow Level, Chaos Sanctuary, Travincal — and limited where fire immunes appear. The Demon tree also provides a strong support framework: Demonic Mastery scales demon effectiveness, Blood Oath reduces demon damage taken, and Consume lets you sacrifice a demon for personal buffs before tough boss encounters.

STRENGTHS

  • Massive fire AoE clears dense packs
  • Cow Level absolute destroyer
  • Pairs perfectly with Summoner Warlock
  • Demon tree support skills add strong utility
  • Strong against clustered elite packs

WEAKNESSES

  • B tier — not the strongest standalone Warlock
  • Fire immune mobs require Infinity merc
  • Weak against sparse single enemies
  • Requires a demon to erupt — setup dependent
  • Excels only in dense area farming

Skill Allocation

Max (20 points each)

Blood Boil — 20 points

Erupts a demon's blood to deal fire damage to all nearby enemies. Each level increases the fire damage radius and damage output. The AoE is centered on the demon you target — position your demons in the middle of enemy packs before erupting for maximum coverage. Blood Boil consumes the demon's health but does not kill it unless its life is already very low.

Demonic Mastery — 20 points (passive)

Passive that enhances all summoned and bound demons. More life on your demons means Blood Boil can be used more frequently without killing your summons. Demonic Mastery also improves demon damage and resistances — your Summon Tainted (fire demon) benefits directly, dealing supplementary fire damage while Blood Boil is on cooldown.

Blood Oath — 20 points (passive)

Passive damage reduction for your bound demons. Higher Blood Oath keeps demons alive longer between Blood Boil eruptions. This is especially important when using Blood Boil frequently — the skill strains demon health, and Blood Oath passive is your main mitigation for demon attrition.

1 Point (Utility)

Summon Goatman — 1 point — Blood Boil fodder and frontline tank. Keep a fresh Goatman positioned in pack centers as your primary Blood Boil target.
Summon Tainted — 1 point — Fire-based summon. Deals supplementary fire damage while Blood Boil recharges. Also serves as a secondary Blood Boil target if Goatman is on cooldown.
Death Mark — 1 point — Forces a demon to teleport to and attack a specific enemy. Repositions your Goatman to pack center before erupting Blood Boil. Essential for placement control.
Engorge — 1 point — Feed corpses to your demon to restore health after Blood Boil eruptions drain its life. Critical for sustaining the Blood Boil loop without constant resummoning.
Consume — 1 point — Sacrifice a demon for personal power buffs before boss encounters. Use a spare Goatman, not your primary Blood Boil demon.
Summon Defiler — 1–10 points (optional) — If running as a hybrid with Summoner, Defilers chain packs in place while your Blood Boil erupts the clustered group. The combination is more effective than either approach alone.

Stat Points

Strength: Minimum for gear. Dexterity: Base. Vitality: All remaining points — you need to stay close enough to position demons in pack centers, so survivability matters. Energy: Base — Blood Boil is mana-efficient; Engorge refills demon health allowing continued eruptions without extra mana cost.

Mercenary

Act 2 NM Offensive (Might) with Infinity is essential for endgame standalone play — fire immunities in Hell block Blood Boil entirely, and Conviction from Infinity is the most reliable solution. Budget alternative: Act 2 NM Defensive with Insight polearm for Meditation aura (mana) and Holy Freeze for supplementary crowd control. Fortitude + Andariel's Visage standard merc loadout. When running Blood Boil as a supplement to a Summoner Warlock, follow the Summoner's merc optimization instead.

How Blood Boil Works

Blood Boil targets one of your summoned demons and erupts its blood outward as fire damage in an AoE centered on that demon. The demon takes health damage from the eruption — Engorge (corpse feeding) restores health between casts, and Blood Oath passive reduces per-hit damage intake to keep the demon alive through repeated eruptions.

Positioning is critical: your Goatman or Tainted must be surrounded by enemies for Blood Boil to hit multiple targets. Use Death Mark to teleport your demon to the pack center before erupting. In the Cow Level, Goatmen cluster naturally — position your demon in the densest cluster, erupt, reposition, repeat. The AoE radius scales with Blood Boil skill level, and Demonic Mastery increases demon health so they survive more eruptions between Engorge casts.

FCR Breakpoints

FASTER CAST RATE (FCR) — 63% target

63% FCR is the first meaningful Blood Boil cast speed breakpoint. Spirit grimoire (35%) + Magefist (20%) + one FCR ring reaches this efficiently. Faster casts = more Blood Boil eruptions per minute.

105% FCR — endgame target

At 105% FCR, Blood Boil and Death Mark cast at near-minimum frames. Bloodpact Shard (30% FCR) + Spirit grimoire (35%) + Magefist (20%) + Arachnid Mesh (20%) overshoots this comfortably. Enables extremely fast demon repositioning + eruption cycles.

Playstyle Tips

  • Core loop: use Death Mark to teleport your Goatman into the center of a pack, then immediately cast Blood Boil to erupt it. The fire damage radiates outward from the demon's position.
  • Use Engorge between Blood Boil casts to restore your demon's health — feed nearby corpses to sustain the eruption loop without needing to resummon constantly.
  • Summon Tainted (fire summon) provides continuous fire damage between Blood Boil eruptions. Two sources of fire damage in the same pack add up quickly.
  • Stack fire skill damage items (+Fire Skills from Magefist, Ars Tor'Baalos Demon skill bonuses) to amplify every Blood Boil eruption.
  • Consume a spare Goatman before tough boss encounters for the life/run/walk buff. Never Consume your primary eruption demon mid-fight.
  • Pair with Summoner Warlock friends or a Defiler summon (1-10pts) — Defilers chain packs in place, allowing Blood Boil to hit the entire chained group simultaneously.
  • Best areas: Cow Level (bovines cluster naturally, Blood Boil erupts into dense packs), Chaos Sanctuary (dense corridor packs), Travincal (clustered Council Members).

Leveling Progression

Levels 1–17 — Invest in Demonic Mastery (passive, lvl 1) and Summon Goatman. Let demons tank. Blood Oath (lvl 6) passive helps demon survivability significantly. Start building toward Blood Boil prerequisites.
Levels 18–24 — Blood Boil (lvl 18) unlocks. Start investing heavily. Summon Tainted (lvl 12) is already online providing fire damage. The eruption loop becomes playable. Engorge (lvl 24) unlocks demon sustain.
Levels 25–50 — Max Blood Boil → Demonic Mastery → Blood Oath. The eruption AoE grows noticeably with each Blood Boil level. Farm Infinity rune components. Nightmare content is relatively easy with fire damage at this investment level.
Levels 50+ — Acquire Infinity merc for Hell fire immunes. Consume (lvl 30) provides pre-boss power buffs. Target Bloodpact Shard and Ars Tor'Baalos for +Demon skills. The build reaches its peak in dense Hell farming once Infinity handles immunes.

Best Farming Areas

COW LEVEL — BEST AREA

Hell Bovines are not fire immune. They cluster naturally in large herds. Position a Goatman, Death Mark it into the herd center, erupt Blood Boil. With Infinity merc for any fire immunity stragglers, the Cow Level is where Blood Boil achieves its highest throughput.

CHAOS SANCTUARY

Dense packs and high-value drops. Blood Boil erupts into dense Venom Lords and Oblivion Knight clusters. Infinity merc handles fire immunes. Diablo can be targeted with a positioned Goatman adjacent for the boss kill.

SUMMONER WARLOCK SYNERGY

The ideal combination: a Summoner Warlock uses Summon Defiler to chain and hold packs while the Blood Boil Warlock erupts Goatmen into the chained, stationary clusters. Two Warlocks working in tandem clear all of Hell with exceptional efficiency.

Highlight Blood Boil Warlock Drops

Highlight Bloodpact Shard, Ars Tor'Baalos, Magefist, Infinity runes (Ber+Mal+Ber+Ist), and +Warlock/fire skill items.
