Double Throw Barbarian Build Guide

By the DiabloBytes team · Updated March 2026

Overview

The Double Throw Barbarian is one of D2R's most slept-on builds — a weapon-slinging ranged attacker that deals raw Physical Damage while staying safely at distance. Instead of wading into melee, this Barb hurls two weapons simultaneously, shredding enemies from range with rapid-fire projectiles that can pierce multiple targets.

Throwing Mastery is what makes this build work. It passively boosts damage, attack rating, critical strike chance, pierce chance, and — critically — replenishes throwing weapon quantity on critical strikes. Without it, you'd burn through weapons constantly. With max Throwing Mastery, your weapons essentially become self-sustaining.

The real magic is the gear combo: Lacerator's 33% chance to cast Amplify Damage effectively neutralizes physical immunity on nearby targets when it procs, while Warshrike's pierce cuts through entire monster packs. The result is a surprisingly capable elite hunter that can farm almost any area on any player count.

The build's weakness is single-dimensional damage — it's almost entirely physical, meaning physical immune enemies require a swap to Berserk (magic damage). And top-tier performance requires quality throwing weapons, which are genuinely hard to find. But a fully-loaded Double Throw Barb can cut through anything in an instant.

Skill Allocation

Throwing Mastery — 20 points (max first)
The most important skill in this build. Boosts damage, attack rating, critical strike, pierce chance, and quantity replenishment for throwing weapons. Max this before Double Throw — it makes everything else work.
Double Swing — 20 points (synergy)
Primary damage synergy to Double Throw (+% damage per level). Max for the passive damage bonus. Also used to pre-buff Frenzy's attack speed on weapon swap (2× Mania Phase Blades for Burst of Speed).
Double Throw — 20 points
Core attack. Hurls both equipped throwing weapons simultaneously in a straight line. Cannot move while using this skill. Max after Throwing Mastery and Double Swing for best results.
Find Potion — max (synergy to Find Item)
Synergy to Find Item, and boosts Grim Ward's physical resistance reduction. Both effects are valuable. Max for the combined benefit.
Battle Orders — 10 points minimum
Life/mana/stamina multiplier. 10 points is the sweet spot — you're at range so you don't need as much raw life as a melee build. More points if spare.
Find Item — 10 points minimum
Second loot roll on corpses. Essential for elite hunting efficiency — Find Item gives you a second chance at every elite pack's drop table. Stack with Magic Find gear for maximum value.
Frenzy — 1 point
Used on weapon swap with 2× Mania Phase Blades to pre-buff Burst of Speed — this gives a free movement and attack speed bonus that persists when you switch back to your throwing weapons. Very important quality-of-life skill.
Grim Ward — 1 point
Cast on a monster corpse to apply a fear effect that slows enemies and reduces their physical resistance. Combined with Bone Break, it can break physical immunities. Cannot be cast on undead corpses.
Berserk / Howl / Battle Command / Increased Speed / Iron Skin / Natural Resistance — 1 point each
Berserk handles physical immune targets. Howl scatters trash mobs to isolate elite packs. Battle Command gives +1 all skills. Increased Speed, Iron Skin, Natural Resistance are passive quality-of-life investments.

Stat Points

Strength
Enough to equip armor (typically 95–130 base). Throwing weapons have low str requirements — most investment goes to armor/belt.
Dexterity
200–300 dexterity points. Unlike other Barbarians, dex directly boosts Double Throw's damage and attack rating. This is not the same as melee barbs — invest seriously in dex here for meaningful damage gains.
Vitality
Everything remaining after meeting str/dex requirements. Target 2,500+ life with BO. You're at range but not immune to damage — packs can still burst you.
Energy
None. BO covers mana. Mana on hit from gear or potions if needed.

Gear

Weapons (Both Slots)
Budget — Starter
Upgraded The Scalper (unique throwing axe) or Upgraded Deathbit. Both provide solid starting damage. Rare throwing weapons with Cruel prefix from Malah in Nightmare are also strong. Imbuing throwing weapon bases for Cruel affix is a good early investment.
Mid-tier
Warshrike (winged knife) — pierce + deadly strike + replenishes quantity. Excellent crowd-clearing weapon. Pair with Lacerator for the Amplify Damage proc.
BiS
Lacerator (winged axe) main hand + Warshrike off-hand. Lacerator's 33% Amplify Damage proc is devastating — it essentially removes physical resistance from nearby targets when it fires. This combo is how you farm on /Players 8. Ethereal bases with auto-repair are ideal.
Weapon Swap (critical)
2× Mania Phase Blades on swap. Use Double Swing to pre-buff Frenzy's Burst of Speed — the movement and attack speed bonus persists when you switch back. This is a major quality-of-life technique for the build.
Helm / Armor / Other
Helm: Arreat's Face (BiS for skills + leech). Armor: Enigma (Teleport + str per level) or Fortitude for raw damage. Rings: Raven Frost (cannot be frozen, AR) + rare life/resist ring. Amulet: Highlord's Wrath (+1 all skills, deadly strike, IAS) or rare +2 Barb with attack speed. Belt: Verdungo's (life, DR) or Thundergod's Vigor. Gloves: Laying of Hands (IAS, fire resist) or rare attack speed gloves. Boots: Gore Rider (deadly strike, open wounds, crushing blow — all apply on throws).

Mercenary

Act 1 Cold Mercenary — Faith (BiS)
Faith runeword on the Act 1 Cold merc provides a Fanaticism aura — this massively boosts your Double Throw's attack speed, damage, and attack rating. It's the biggest single damage upgrade you can give this build. Gear with Shaftstop and Andariel's Visage for survivability. If you can't afford Faith yet, use Act 2 merc instead.
Act 2 Nightmare Offensive (Might) — Budget
If you can't afford Faith, a Might aura merc with Infinity provides Conviction to lower enemy defenses. Holy Freeze is also an option for the slow utility while you throw from range. Gear with Reaper's Toll (Decrepify on striking) + Andariel's Visage + Fortitude.

Playstyle Tips

  • Always pre-buff: Weapon Swap → Frenzy (Double Swing pre-buffs Burst of Speed) → swap back to throwing weapons. The speed buff persists and is free damage.
  • Battle Command → Battle Orders before each run. With 10 pts in BO you still get excellent life scaling.
  • Throwing Mastery's pierce chance + Warshrike's pierce = entire rows of monsters shredded in one pass. Aim at tight packs.
  • Lacerator's Amplify Damage proc is your physical immune solution — keep throwing and wait for the proc to fire before swapping to Berserk.
  • Grim Ward on the first corpse of a pack reduces physical resistance of everything nearby — cast it immediately when something dies.
  • Use Howl to scatter trash mobs before engaging an elite pack — isolate the elites for focused killing and a clean Find Item after.
  • Find Item every elite corpse after the kill — 10+ points in Find Item gives ~60% Hork chance, effectively doubling your elite loot.
  • Can't be frozen is mandatory — Raven Frost ring or crafted amulet. A frozen Double Throw Barb does nothing.

Leveling Progression

Double Throw is available at level 12 — start building into it early:

Levels 1–11 — Bash + Double Swing. Put 5–6 points into Double Swing and Throwing Mastery early. Vendor-bought throwing weapons work fine here.
Levels 12–30 — Max Double Throw as your main skill. Max Throwing Mastery with remaining points. Buy throwing weapons from Charsi or Malah. Start hunting for Lacerator/Warshrike in Nightmare.
Levels 30–60 — Max Double Swing synergy → start on Battle Orders. Respec in Nightmare to add Natural Resistance and Battle Orders. Farm Nightmare for Lacerator and Warshrike.
Levels 75+ (endgame) — Full skill allocation complete. Lacerator + Warshrike equipped. Faith merc operational. Farm Pits, Chaos Sanctuary, Eldritch, or any dense elite area. Find Item after every elite kill.
