Dream Paladin (Dreamadin)
Overview
The Dreamadin is a flex build that weaponizes one of D2R's most expensive runewords: Dream. Socketed into both a helm and a shield, two Dreams stack their Holy Shock auras to level 30 — a passive lightning AoE that fires every few seconds and hits everything on screen. You walk into a pack, the aura detonates, everything dies. The Dreamadin is primarily melee but the damage comes from the aura, not your weapon. Expensive to build, absolutely worth it.
STRENGTHS
- Farms virtually all content
- Dual damage (physical + lightning)
- Conviction breaks own immunities
- Very tanky (max block + high life)
- Uber Tristram capable
WEAKNESSES
- Two Jah runes required (enormous cost)
- Zeal locks you in place 5 swings
- Repetitive playstyle
- Requires Enigma for full efficiency
- Lightning immune mobs need management
Skill Allocation
MAX IN ORDER
20 pts — Resist Lightning (synergy — boosts Holy Shock AoE damage)
20 pts — Salvation (synergy — boosts Holy Shock AoE damage)
~25 pts — Conviction (active aura — lowers enemy resistances and defense; break lightning immunes)
20 pts — Sacrifice (synergy for Zeal)
20 pts — Zeal (primary melee attack — applies Holy Shock lightning damage on each hit)
1 POINT EACH
1 pt each — Holy Shield (mandatory defense buff), Holy Freeze (pre-req / situational), Charge (mobility before Enigma)
Note: Holy Shock is NOT a skill you invest in directly. The Dream runeword gives you a level 30 Holy Shock aura. Resist Lightning and Salvation are the synergies that boost that aura's damage. Your active aura while fighting is Conviction — it lowers enemy lightning resistance and can break immunities.

Mercenary
Act 2 Nightmare Offensive (Might aura). The standard BiS weapon is The Reaper's Toll — its Decrepify on-hit proc reduces enemy physical resistance by 50% and slows them, dramatically boosting your Zeal damage. Paired with Treachery armor (for Fade proc) and Guillaume's Face helm, the merc reaches the optimal attack speed breakpoint for maximum Decrepify procs. Your own Conviction aura already handles lightning immunities — the merc's job is raw damage amplification and crowd control via Decrepify.
Budget option: Act 2 Holy Freeze merc with Insight polearm while farming for Reaper's Toll. Fortitude + Andariel's Visage once you have the runes.
Breakpoints
FASTER CAST RATE (FCR) — for teleporting with Enigma weapon swap
Target 48% FCR on weapon swap (Spirit + FCR amulet). This is reachable and sufficient for map navigation.
FASTER HIT RECOVERY (FHR)
Target 48% FHR minimum. Verdungo's Heartsy + Treachery merc Fade help here. Being knocked into hit recovery mid-Zeal chain costs you full DPS.
FASTER BLOCK RATE (FBR) — with Holy Shield active
Holy Shield dramatically improves FBR breakpoints. With Holy Shield active: target 86% FBR. Paladin class shields (e.g., Dream shield) help reach this.
Playstyle Tips
- Keep Conviction aura active while fighting — it lowers enemy lightning resistance and can break lightning immunities on its own. Switch to Salvation briefly if your party needs resistance support.
- Dream runeword gives Holy Shock aura — put it in BOTH helm and shield. The two auras stack, giving you level 30 Holy Shock. Both pieces are required for full damage.
- Holy Shock pulses hit everything nearby every 2 seconds AND adds lightning damage to every Zeal swing. You're dealing lightning damage constantly even while repositioning.
- The Reaper's Toll merc proc is huge for bosses — Decrepify reduces physical resistance by 50% and slows the target, letting your Zeal chain hit harder and recover faster.
- This build requires two Jah runes (one per Dream) — it's one of the most expensive builds in D2R. Budget option: one Dream + Exile shield until you find the second Jah.
- Use Charge for mobility when running between packs before you have Enigma. After Enigma, Teleport is your gap-closer.
- Zeal locks you into its 5-swing animation — position yourself inside a pack before initiating. Swinging into empty air wastes all 5 hits.
Leveling Progression
Dream Paladin is a pure endgame build — level as another Paladin spec:
Common Mistakes
- Maxing Fanaticism: Fanaticism does NOTHING for the Dream Paladin's damage. You're not a traditional Zealot. Your aura damage (Holy Shock) comes from Resist Lightning + Salvation synergies, not from attack speed. Fanaticism wastes 20 skill points.
- Wrong merc weapon: Many players put Infinity on the Dream Paladin merc because they're used to it. Conviction breaks lightning immunities but your own Conviction aura already does this. Reaper's Toll gives you Decrepify, which is a much bigger damage multiplier (+50% physical damage taken) that stacks with your own Conviction.
- Skipping Holy Shield: Holy Shield is not optional — it provides a massive block bonus and FBR improvement. Cast it before every fight and recast when it expires. Its duration scales with skill level; a few extra points in it help significantly.
- Using non-Paladin shield for Dream: Dream in a non-Paladin shield has vastly lower block chance. An elite Paladin-class shield (Sacred Targe etc.) provides 75% block at a much lower DEX investment. Always use a Paladin shield for the second Dream.
Leveling Progression
The Dream Paladin is NOT a leveling build — it's an endgame build that requires two Jah runes. Level as a different spec and respec at endgame:
Dream Runeword — What You're Actually Building
Dream is Io + Jah + Pul socketed into a 3-socket helm or Paladin shield. Two of these give you dual level 15 Holy Shock auras that combine to level 30. Here's what the full runeword grants:
- Level 15 Holy Shock Aura When Equipped (two = level 30)
- +20-30% Faster Hit Recovery
- +30% Enhanced Defense
- +150-220 Defense
- +10 to Vitality
- +(0.625 per character level) to Mana (max 61.25)
- All Resistances +5-20
- 12-25% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
- +4-6 to Absorb Lightning Damage
The two Jah runes (highest-cost rune outside of Cham and Zod) are why this is labeled "Very High" cost. A single Jah rune is worth roughly an Enigma — you need two. The Io and Pul runes are trivial by comparison.
Best bases: For the helm, use a Bone Visage, Giant Conch, or Dusk Shroud (for defense). For the shield, use an elite Paladin-class shield (Sacred Targe, Sacred Rondache, or Kurast Shield) — Paladin shields get higher block rates than regular shields, and you want an elite base for max blocking and sockets.
Best Farming Areas
CHAOS SANCTUARY (DIABLO)
Dense packs with high rune and item drop rates. Your Conviction breaks the lightning-immune Oblivion Knights. Diablo himself dies in seconds to dual Dream + Conviction + Zeal. Best gold farm in the game.
UBER TRISTRAM
Dual Dream Paladins are among the most effective Uber killers. Conviction strips all the Uber bosses' resistances. Reaper's Toll merc debuffs with Decrepify. Physical damage from Zeal + lightning from Holy Shock = massive combined damage against everything.
TRAVINCAL / COUNCIL
High-level Council members drop excellent loot and are densely packed. Your lightning aura pulses constantly while you walk in — they die before you can even Zeal half the time. Quick runs, great rune/ring drops.
Highlight Dream Paladin Drops
Highlight Io + Jah + Pul runes for Dream runeword, elite helm and shield bases, and Reaper's Toll polearms.
