Fire Claws Druid Build Guide

Overview

Fire Claws adds a massive flat fire damage bonus to each melee attack while in Werebear or Werewolf form — a hybrid concept that, with the right gear, delivers genuinely impressive fire damage per hit. The core appeal is pairing the bear's tankiness (via Shockwave stun utility) with fire damage that can reach staggering numbers on each swing. The build also inherits synergies with Fissure, so you can optionally hybrid Fissure for AoE between cooldowns and Fire Claws for single-target melee. Fire immunities in Hell are the primary obstacle — without Flame Rift sunder and an Infinity merc, you're constantly skipping half the map. With both, the build clears well in areas suited to melee.

Werebear is generally preferred over Werewolf for this build — the tankiness and Shockwave stun utility allow you to plant yourself in a pack and swing freely. Werewolf offers faster attacks but less survivability in close quarters.

Skill Allocation

20 pts — Fire Claws (primary attack — converts melee to fire damage)

20 pts — Firestorm (synergy to Fire Claws — each point increases fire damage)

20 pts — Fissure (synergy to Fire Claws + optional AoE on cooldown rotation)

20 pts — Werebear (form of choice — life, defense, enables Maul and Shockwave)

20 pts — Lycanthropy (extends form duration, huge life multiplier)

1 pt each — Shockwave (AoE stun cone, massive utility), Heart of Wolverine, Oak Sage

Fire Claws synergizes with both Firestorm AND Fissure — each adds +14% to Fire Claws damage per hard point. Maxing both gives you 40 synergy points pushing enormous base fire damage per hit. The Fissure synergy also means you can cast Fissure between attacks for bonus AoE — a genuine hybrid rotation on a single character.

IAS Breakpoints (Werebear Form)

Werebear attacks slowly — IAS from gear is critical. IAS does NOT work from most runewords while in bear form (only weapon IAS counts).

Beast runeword gives Fanaticism aura (+IAS) — the #1 weapon for this build in BiS gear.

With a Phase Blade (already 200% base speed): minimal IAS needed from other sources.

Target: 4-frame or 5-frame attack in bear form for good clear speed.

Stat Points

Strength: Enough for gear

Dexterity: Base (Werebear's defense bonus makes block less critical)

Vitality: Everything else — Lycanthropy multiplies your base life significantly

Energy: Base

Gear

Budget

Weapon: +3 Fire Claws magic claws (prefix: Flaming, suffix: of Incineration) — prioritize skill levels

Armor: Treachery (IAS helps in bear form + Fade proc for resistances)

Helm: Jalal's Mane (+2 Druid skills, shapeshifting bonus)

Gloves: Dracul's Grasp (Life Tap proc for sustain)

Mid

Weapon: +6 Fire Claws magic claws (+3 prefix / +3 suffix) — significantly more fire damage per hit

Armor: Enigma (Teleport to engage and disengage)

Charm: Flame Rift sunder (critical — breaks fire immunities so your attacks work)

Rings: Raven Frost + Bul-Kathos' Wedding Band

Best in Slot

Weapon: Beast Berserker Axe (Fanaticism aura for massive IAS + damage)

Offhand (off-weapon slot): +6 Fire Claws claw or Grief Phase Blade

Armor: Fortitude Archon Plate

Helm: Jalal's Mane socketed with fire facet

Charms: Flame Rift sunder + Druid fire/shape GCs + life SCs

Mercenary

Type: Act 2 Nightmare Offensive (Might aura)

Weapon: Infinity (Conviction aura — stacks with Flame Rift for extreme fire res reduction)

Armor: Fortitude

Helm: Andariel's Visage

Infinity + Flame Rift together crush fire resistance to extreme negatives. Without both, too many monsters in Hell resist your attacks entirely.

Playstyle Tips

  • Fire Claws converts each melee attack to deal additional fire damage on top of physical — you still deal physical damage, which handles fire immunes partially.
  • Use Shockwave before engaging a pack — the AoE stun cone locks down the whole group while you swing freely.
  • Fissure shares synergies — cast it on cooldown for bonus AoE between melee swings. True hybrid rotation.
  • Werebear's massive life pool + Lycanthropy + Oak Sage makes this one of the tankiest builds in the game.
  • Heart of Wolverine spirit (1 pt) boosts your attack rating and melee damage — always keep it active.
  • Enigma is extremely valuable here — Teleport into a pack, Shockwave, then swing. Much faster than walking.
  • Target areas with tight corridors: Flayer Jungle, Maggot Lair, tunnels — melee fire shines when enemies can't spread out.

Leveling Progression

Fire Claws is available at level 18 in shapeshifting form:

Levels 1–17 — Werebear + Maul or Firestorm for ranged damage. Build Firestorm and Fissure early (both are synergies to Fire Claws later).
Levels 18–30 — Add Fire Claws. The fire damage bonus is immediately significant in Normal. Use Fissure AoE on cooldown.
Levels 30–60 — Max Fire Claws → Firestorm → Fissure synergies. Add Werebear and Lycanthropy for survivability.
Levels 60+ — Max Lycanthropy → Oak Sage. Target +6 Fire Claws claws, Jalal's Mane, Fortitude. Merc with Infinity + Flame Rift enable full Hell viability.
