Overview
Frost Nova is the Sorceress's original 360° AoE cold spell — a ring of cold energy that radiates outward from your feet, freezing and damaging everything in close range. The Frost Nova Sorceress pairs it with Frozen Orb as its natural companion: Frost Nova detonates instantly on everything adjacent to you (no cooldown) while Frozen Orb covers medium-range targets with its slow-moving burst. Teleport into a pack, Frost Nova to freeze everything clustered around you, launch Frozen Orb at the fringe targets — that's the full rotation. Energy Shield with a Telekinesis investment is critical: you're standing inside packs constantly, and mana-absorbing incoming hits is what keeps this build alive in Hell. The freeze duration from Nova means your merc can freely swing at stunned targets without taking return fire.
Skill Allocation
- Frost Nova — 20 points (primary AoE — instant 360° cold ring, no cast delay)
- Frozen Orb — 20 points (secondary skill — slow-moving orb with wide cold coverage; strong vs single targets)
- Cold Mastery — 1–17 points (diminishing returns past –100% cold res; use +skills gear to push value)
- Ice Bolt — 20 points (key synergy to Frost Nova AND Frozen Orb)
- Glacial Spike — 1 point (prereq for Blizzard and synergy to Frozen Orb)
- Telekinesis — 20 points (synergy to Energy Shield; allows interacting with objects at range)
- Energy Shield — 1 point (absorbs damage using mana — critical for this close-range build)
- Teleport — 1 point (critical — you're a close-range build that needs fast repositioning)
- Static Field — 1 point (mandatory for bosses)
- Frozen Armor — 1 point
Priority order: max Frost Nova → Ice Bolt (synergy) → Frozen Orb → Telekinesis → remaining into Cold Mastery. Energy Shield with Telekinesis is critical for this build since you're standing in the middle of packs — mana absorbs hits that would kill you. Frozen Orb is the secondary skill for when Frost Nova (no cooldown, but limited range) isn't enough — it covers more ground.
Stat Points
Strength: Minimum for gear. Dexterity: Base. Vitality: All remaining — this build gets into melee range, so life is critical. Energy: Base.

Faster Cast Rate Breakpoints
Frost Nova is an instant cast — FCR doesn't affect Frost Nova itself. FCR matters for Frozen Orb and Teleport speed.
Target: 105% FCR (for Frozen Orb at 7 frames, comfortable Teleport speed)
FCR thresholds for Sorceress: 0% → 9% → 20% → 37% → 63% → 105% → 200%
Mercenary
Type: Act 2 Nightmare Offensive (Might aura)
Weapon (Budget): Insight — Meditation aura handles mana for Energy Shield upkeep
Weapon (Endgame): Infinity — Conviction aura breaks cold immunities and lets Frozen Orb damage immune targets
Armor: Fortitude (damage + resistances)
Helm: Andariel's Visage (life leech — critical since he's in the middle of packs with you)
This is a close-range build — your merc needs to stay alive in the middle of the pack alongside you. Prioritize his survivability. Energy Shield from your Telekinesis investment absorbs hits directed at you, but your merc doesn't have that luxury — Fortitude's defense bonus and life helps him survive the same packs you're diving into.
Playstyle Tips
- Frost Nova has no cooldown and hits everything in a circle — spam it constantly while in a pack for freeze + damage.
- Teleport into a pack, immediately Frost Nova to freeze everything, then launch Frozen Orb at fringe targets. Clean, fast rotation.
- Energy Shield is mandatory — you're inside packs all the time. Without it, you die to the first hit after Teleport.
- Cold Mastery has diminishing returns past roughly –100% resist (before gear bonuses). Invest 1 hard point and let +skills do the work.
- Frozen Orb is your secondary skill — it doesn't share a cooldown with Frost Nova and covers medium range while Nova handles close range.
- The freeze duration makes your mercenary's job trivially easy — frozen enemies don't swing back while he's wailing on them.
- Keep Energy Shield active at all times — Telekinesis investment means each point of mana absorbed = more points of damage blocked.
