Overview

The Gold Find Barbarian — universally called the "GF Barb" — is the definitive Travincal farming build and arguably the most efficient high rune hunter in D2R. The goal is simple: stack as much Gold Find % as possible on every gear slot, kill the Travincal Council, then Hork (Find Item) every corpse for a second loot roll.

The real trick is that you want your Mercenary landing the killing blows — when the merc gets the kill, his Gold Find stacks with yours, multiplying the gold dropped. Your role is crowd control (Leap to pin monsters, War Cry to stun), damage support (Berserk on tougher targets), and Horking corpses after. You're the cleanup crew and loot vacuum.

Gold isn't just gold. In D2R, gambling gold at Gheed is one of the most reliable ways to find rare items, crafting bases, and circlets. But the real prize from Travincal is the Council Members' exceptional rune drop rate. With 2,000%+ Gold Find and near-80% Hork chance, each Travincal run generates staggering loot value.

This build uses Lem-socketed gear (+75% GF each), Chance Guards, Crown of Thieves, Wealth armor, and Gheed's Fortune charm to push GF as high as possible. The merc with a Might aura and Breath of the Dying War Pike does the heavy killing while you use Leap and War Cry to control the battlefield.

Skill Allocation

Battle Orders — 20 points (max first)

Life/mana/stamina multiplier for you and your merc. Max this first — GF gear is squishy, BO compensates and keeps your merc alive too.

Berserk — 20 points

Magic damage to assist killing. Physical-immune Council Members don't exist, but Berserk lets you assist your merc without needing high physical damage gear. Also useful for a fast Berserk + Concentrate variant.

Find Item — 1–20 points

The Hork. Even 1 point with high +skills gear gives a good chance. More points increase Find Potion's synergy which also boosts Find Item's loot chance. Max if you have spare points.

Find Potion — max as synergy

Synergy to Find Item. Each point into Find Potion increases Find Item's proc chance. Essential for pushing your Hork rate toward 80%+.

Howl — max as synergy

Synergy for the War Cry variant. Also useful to scatter non-elite trash while you focus on the Council bosses.

Leap — 1 point minimum (max for Leap variant)

Core CC utility. Short hops on top of your own location knock back and pin monsters so your merc can freely attack. The Leap variant maxes this — you're a platform for the merc's kills.

Battle Command — 1 point

+1 to all skills for party. Always pre-buff with Battle Command before Battle Orders and Shout to get the skill bonus applied to your buffs.

Natural Resistance / Blade Mastery — remaining points

Natural Resistance patches GF gear's terrible resists. Blade Mastery increases Berserk's effectiveness if you use a phase blade (Grief Phase Blade is a strong damage weapon for the Berserk variant).

Stat Points

Strength

Enough to equip your gear. Wealth Sacred Armor requires 232 str. Use gear bonuses to minimize base investment.

Dexterity

Enough for gear requirements. Max block (75%) with Stormshield if you use that variant — it dramatically increases survivability in Hell Travincal.

Vitality

Everything else. Target 3,000+ life with BO active. GF gear trades defense and resists for gold — you need raw life to compensate.

Energy

None. BO covers mana needs. Scroll of Town Portal on your belt handles repositioning if needed.

Gear

Every slot is optimized around Gold Find %. Socket everything possible with Lem runes (+75% GF each). Target 2,000–2,500%+ total GF.

Weapon

Budget → BiS

Ali Baba (unique scimitar) — 200% GF, 2 sockets for +150% more (Lem × 2). Exceptional BiS for GF barbs. Alternatively, Grief Phase Blade for the damage-focused Berserk variant — swap between both based on situation. Oath in a sword base is a strong mid-tier option.

Helm

Budget → BiS

Crown of Thieves — 80–100% GF, life stolen, fire resist. The GF barb's best budget helm. Arreat's Face with Lem rune also works for +2 Barb skills + 75% GF. Crown of Thieves edges it out for pure GF stacking.

Armor

Budget → BiS

Wealth runeword (Lem Ko Tir) in a Sacred Armor — 300% GF. This is the core GF armor. Goldskin (100% GF) is a cheaper alternative. Enigma provides Teleport for the War Cry variant's repositioning of your merc.

Shield

Budget → BiS

Stormshield with Lem rune. Survivability + 75% GF. Excellent for the Berserk variant where you're in melee. Second Ali Baba on off-hand for more GF if using dual-wield setup on swap.

Key GF Items

Gloves: Chance Guards (+200% GF, required). Belt: Goldwrap (+50–80% GF, IAS). Rings: Dwarf Star (100% GF) × 2. Amulet: Rare +2 Barb skills + GF%. Charms: Gheed's Fortune grand charm (80–160% GF, 10–20% MF, reduced vendor prices). Fill small charms with GF/life combos. Swap weapon: Heart of the Oak Flail or +3 Warcries scepter for the War Cry variant.

Mercenary

Act 2 Nightmare Offensive — Might Aura (recommended)

The Might aura merc is the primary recommendation — he does the killing while you Hork. Might aura provides massive physical damage amplification to his strikes. Gear him with Breath of the Dying War Pike for devastating physical damage, Crown of Thieves or Andariel's Visage for the helm, and Treachery or Fortitude for the armor. The merc's Gold Find also stacks with yours when he gets kills — keep him alive and let him hit.

Alternative: Act 2 Nightmare Defensive — Holy Freeze

Holy Freeze slows Council for easier Leaping and crowd control. Good if you're struggling with survival. Trade damage for safety. Gear the same way — Treachery + Insight early, Andariel's Visage + Fortitude for endgame.

Playstyle Tips

Always pre-buff with Battle Command (×2) → Battle Orders → Shout at the start of each run. These buffs are everything.
Let your Might merc do the killing — when he gets the final blow, both his and your GF stack together for higher drops.
Use short Leap hops (leap on top of your own position) to knock back and pin monsters around your merc so he can attack freely.
Use Battle Cry to reduce enemy defense and damage — makes the fight easier for both you and your merc.
Before enemies die, swap to your GF weapon setup and immediately use Find Item on every corpse. Two loot rolls = double rune chances.
Gambling at Gheed with your gold is the endgame loop — gamble circlets, amulets, and rings for GG rares and bases.
Wealth Sacred Armor is the core GF armor — 300% GF in one slot. It's a high rune investment (Lem Ko Tir) but non-negotiable for maximum GF.
War Cry variant: Use 105% FCR breakpoint on swap and stun the whole screen while your merc cleans up. Reposition merc with Enigma's Teleport.

Leveling Progression

Gold Find Barb is an endgame respec — level as a normal melee Barbarian:

Levels 1–17 — Double Swing or Bash through Normal. Invest in weapon mastery and Shout. Reach level 24 for Battle Orders.

Levels 18–30 — Battle Orders at 24 for survivability. Continue with any melee skill through Nightmare. Frenzy works well here.

Levels 30–60 — Consider respeccing into War Cry at 30 for leveling efficiency or stay melee. Max Battle Orders. Begin acquiring GF gear pieces.

Levels 60+ (Hell respec) — Full respec into GF Barb. Max Battle Orders → Berserk → Find Potion → Howl. Equip Wealth, Crown of Thieves, Chance Guards, Goldwrap, Dwarf Stars. Farm Travincal endlessly.
