Kicksin (Dragon Talon Assassin) Build Guide

By the DiabloBytes team · Updated March 2026

Overview

The Kicksin is D2R's premier Uber-killing machine — and one of the most satisfying builds to pilot. Dragon Talon delivers rapid multi-hit kicks that apply Crushing Blow on every hit, shredding boss health bars at a rate that leaves most other builds looking like they're tickling. Her incredibly fast kick speed means CB procs land in rapid succession, dropping Uber bosses before they can recover.

Patches 2.5 and 2.6 were massive buffs. Patch 2.5 made finisher moves always hit when charge-up charges are active. Patch 2.6 introduced the Mosaic runeword, which gives a 100% chance to not consume charges AND refreshes the charge timer on every finisher use — meaning Tiger Strike (damage) and Cobra Strike (leech) are permanently active once charges are built. The result is a build that's simultaneously a top-tier boss killer and genuinely beginner-friendly.

For alternative Uber approaches, see the Smite Paladin. Both are excellent — choice comes down to gear availability and playstyle preference.

Pros

  • Very tanky with Fade + Cobra Strike leech
  • Beginner friendly — cheap budget path
  • Fastest Uber boss kill times on Assassin
  • Always hits when charges are active (Patch 2.5)

Cons

  • Low mobility without Enigma
  • Some gear requirements to reach full potential
  • Not suited for group play
  • Little to no area clear capability

Skill Allocation

Put 1 point into Dragon Flight, Burst of Speed, Cloak of Shadows, and Mind Blast first. Then max in this order:

Dragon Talon — 20 points. Max first. Your primary attack — a series of rapid kicks, each independently rolling Crushing Blow. More points = more kicks per cast. Always hits when Tiger Strike or Cobra Strike charges are active (Patch 2.5).
Tiger Strike — 20 points. Max second. Creates charges that massively increase Physical Damage of your Dragon Talon. With dual Mosaic, charges never expire — permanent 100% uptime after initial charge-up.
Fade — Max (20 points). Provides massive % Physical Damage Reduction and All Resistances. Keep this buff active at ALL times — it is your primary defensive layer. Hard points dramatically increase its effectiveness. Do not rely solely on Treachery proc.
Weapon Block — Enough points to reach ~61% Chance to Block while dual-wielding claws. Invest after Fade is maxed. Exact point count depends on gear (claws provide bonus block).
Claw Mastery — Max after Weapon Block. Provides Attack Rating and Physical Damage while using claws — critical for landing Tiger Strike and Cobra Strike charges reliably.
Cobra Strike — Remaining points (start with 1 pt early). Creates charges that grant Life and Mana Leech on Dragon Talon hits. With dual Mosaic, permanent uptime after charge-up — this is your primary sustain. Pairs with Dracul's Grasp Life Tap for near-unkillable sustain.
Dragon Flight — 1 pt — Assassin teleport. One-point wonder for gap closing, escaping, and repositioning to refresh Mosaic charges quickly.
Mind Blast — 1 pt — Stuns enemies in a small area and has a % chance to convert them. Essential for creating safe spaces to recharge before engaging Ubers.
Cloak of Shadows — 1 pt — Blinds monsters in a large area, reducing their aggro range. Essential crowd control when navigating to Uber bosses through dense monster packs.

Budget / non-Mosaic variant: max Venom and Death Sentry instead of Claw Mastery/Cobra Strike. Death Sentry's Corpse Explosion clears mini-Uber trash packs efficiently.

Stat Points

Strength — Enough to equip your gear. Leverage gear bonuses (Enigma, charms) to meet requirements and minimize base Strength investment.
Dexterity — Enough to reach 75% Chance to Block (combined with Weapon Block). This is NOT base-only — you need to invest actual stat points here until you hit the block cap. Weapon Block supplements but does not replace this requirement.
Vitality — All remaining points. The more the better. Cobra Strike + Dracul's Life Tap handle sustain, but you still need bulk HP to survive initial hits and one-shot scenarios from Ubers.
Energy — None. Zero. Mana is handled through Cobra Strike leech and gear.

Gear

Upgrade your boots to the highest base possible using Horadric Cube recipes — boot kick damage scales with base type. Cannot Be Frozen and Attack Rating are critical stats.

Weapons (Dual)

BiS: Dual Mosaic Greater Talons — 100% chance to not consume charges + refreshes charge timer on finisher use. Permanent Tiger Strike + Cobra Strike uptime. This is the endgame build's core item.
Mid: Stormlash (Shael) + Beast Berserker Axe — Static Field procs and Fanaticism aura.
Budget: Rare claws with +skills, IAS, and as much Attack Rating as you can find. Angelic Halo + Angelic Wings combo is excellent for budget Attack Rating.

Helm

BiS: Guillaume's Face (socketed with IAS jewel) — Crushing Blow + Deadly Strike + high ED. The CB stacking is critical for Uber kills.
Alt BiS: Crown of Ages (Um + Shael) — Damage Reduction, resists, Cannot Be Frozen.
Budget: Kira's Guardian — Cannot Be Frozen and resists for survivability.

Body Armor

BiS: Chains of Honor Dusk Shroud — All Resistances, Damage Reduction, +2 All Skills. Superior defensive package over Fortitude for Ubers.
Alt BiS: Enigma Mage Plate — Teleport enables rapid repositioning and efficient charge maintenance. Highly recommended if you can afford it.
Budget/Mid: Treachery for Fade proc + IAS, or Duriel's Shell (Um Rune) for Cannot Be Frozen + resists.

Gloves

BiS: Dracul's Grasp — Life Tap on striking is your main life recovery when attacking Ubers. Near-mandatory once you can afford them.
Budget: Blood Crafted Gloves (+Martial Arts, IAS) or Death's Hand (use only with Death's Guard belt).

Belt

BiS: Arachnid Mesh — +1 All Skills + Faster Cast Rate (for Enigma teleport builds).
Alt: Thundergod's Vigor (+Max Lightning Resist + Lightning Absorb) — excellent for Über Diablo's lightning.
Budget: Verdungo's Hearty Cord (Vitality + DR) or String of Ears (DR + leech).

Boots

BiS: Gore Rider Myrmidon Greaves (upgraded to highest base) — Crushing Blow + Open Wounds + Deadly Strike. Always upgrade to Myrmidon Greaves using Horadric Cube recipes — kick damage is directly tied to boot base type.
Alt: Goblin Toe Mirrored Boots (upgraded) — Pure Crushing Blow focus.
Budget: Shadow Dancer for +Shadow Disciplines and Dex bonus until you can afford Gore Riders.

Amulet

BiS: Metalgrid — +Attack Rating, All Resistances. Excellent Uber amulet.
Alt: Mara's Kaleidoscope (All Resistances + Skills) or Highlord's Wrath (IAS + Deadly Strike).
Budget: Rare +2 Assassin Skills with life/res mods.

Rings

BiS: Wisp Projector — Lightning Absorb is invaluable against Uber Diablo and Uber Baal's lightning attacks.
Alt: Ravenfrost (Cannot Be Frozen + Attack Rating) or rare rings with FCR/AR/resists.

Weapon Swap

Main swap: Call to Arms (Crystal Sword) + Spirit Monarch — prebuff with Battle Command + Battle Orders before entering Uber areas. +Skills and massive HP boost.
Alt swap: Life Tap Wand (charged) — cast Life Tap manually if Dracul's proc hasn't triggered yet.

Charms

Unique: Hellfire Torch + Annihilus — mandatory endgame charms.
Grand Charms: +1 Martial Arts Assassin skills with FHR or life.
Small Charms: Life, resistances, and Attack Rating. Fill remaining slots with max resist charms.

Mercenary

Act 3 Fire Iron Wolf — The Fire version provides up to +452% Attack Rating by casting Enchant on you. He will not survive Uber Tristram, so don't worry about keeping him alive — he only needs to buff you before combat. Run to any waypoint with nearby monsters, trigger his Enchant, then portal into the Uber areas. Prioritize +Skills gear on him to boost his Enchant level.

Merc Weapon — Hexfire Shamshir (budget) → Ethereal Spirit Monarch (BiS, once he has enough Strength). Both maximize +Skills to amplify Enchant.
Merc Armor — Ormus' Robes Dusk Shroud — +Skills bonus maximizes Enchant level.
Merc Helmet — Flickering Flame — +3 Fire Skills + fire resist aura. Excellent for boosting Enchant and keeping him alive slightly longer.

Playstyle Tips

  • Prebuff order: Battle Command → Battle Orders (from CTA swap) → Fade. Keep Fade active at all times — it is your primary defensive layer, not Burst of Speed.
  • Trigger the Enchant buff from your Act 3 Fire Iron Wolf before entering any Uber portal. Find nearby monsters, let him cast, then portal in. The buff is time-limited but +452% Attack Rating is enormous.
  • Build Mosaic charges before engaging: Enter the first mini-Uber area and use Tiger Strike + Cobra Strike until you have 3 charges of each. Then switch to Dragon Talon — charges persist indefinitely with dual Mosaic.
  • Cast Life Tap on targets before engaging. Dracul's Grasp will eventually proc it for you, but casting it manually at the start guarantees instant sustain.
  • Use Mind Blast and Cloak of Shadows when moving through dense monster packs to reach Uber bosses. Stun/blind clears the path without requiring you to fight everything.
  • Split the Tristram Ubers: Lure Uber Mephisto left and kill him alone. Once he's dead, engage Diablo and Baal together. Never fight all three simultaneously.
  • Death Sentry (budget build): Clear trash packs around mini-Ubers with Corpse Explosion before engaging the boss. Makes the mini-Uber fights dramatically easier.
  • Upgrade your Gore Riders to Myrmidon Greaves — kick damage is tied to boot base type. An upped Gore Rider is a completely different item than normal base Gore Riders.

Leveling Progression

Kick skills unlock early but the build shines in endgame. Level via traps initially, respec when you have your core gear assembled. Minimum level 90 recommended before attempting Ubers — hit chance scales with character level.

Levels 1–17 — Level via Fire Blast and Wake of Fire traps. Trap leveling is significantly faster than kick leveling without endgame boots. Get to Normal Catacombs ASAP.
Levels 18–40 — Continue traps through Normal and Nightmare. Start stacking resists. Pick up any Gore Riders or Goblin Toe boots you find — even at normal base they help kick damage now.
Levels 41–75 — Respec into kicks once you have Gore Riders, Dracul's Grasp, and Guillaume's Face assembled. Begin maxing Dragon Talon, then Tiger Strike. Use Treachery for Fade proc until you have enough skill points to hard-cast a high-level Fade.
Levels 76–90+ — Finish maxing Fade, Weapon Block, and Claw Mastery. Begin farming dual Mosaic. Upgrade boots to Myrmidon Greaves base. Hit level 90+ before first Uber attempt. You ARE the Uber Tristram specialist.
