Miasma Chain Warlock Build Guide

Chaos + Eldritch Hybrid · Miasma Chain · Mirrored Blades · Patch 3.1 · D2R

Overview

The Miasma Chain Warlock is a hybrid build that combines the Chaos tree's Miasma Chain — a spell that summons shadowy chains between you and a target, emitting a suffocating miasma that deals sustained magic damage per second — with the Eldritch tree's Mirrored Blades for burst physical damage. The result is a versatile Warlock that applies persistent AoE magic DoT while weaving in melee blade attacks for single-target burst. Enhanced Entropy (passive) extends miasma duration and radius, making the DoT cloud increasingly dangerous as skill points stack. This is the Warlock's most flexible archetype: strong at farming, viable for Ubers with proper gear, and handles most immunity situations through dual damage types.

STRENGTHS

  • Dual damage types (magic + physical)
  • Strong sustained AoE via Miasma DoT
  • Mirrored Blades handles single targets
  • Flexible — good at farming and bosses
  • Magic damage bypasses most immunities

WEAKNESSES

  • Jack of all trades, master of none
  • Skill points spread across two trees
  • Magic immune mobs exist (rare but painful)
  • Needs decent FCR for smooth Miasma Chain casting
  • Not as tanky as Summoner Warlock

Skill Allocation

Chaos Tree (Primary)
  • Miasma Chain — 20 points (core AoE magic DoT)
  • Miasma Bolt — 20 points (synergy to Miasma Chain + early leveling)
  • Enhanced Entropy — 20 points (passive: +miasma radius, +duration, +Abyss radius)
  • Sigil: Lethargy — 1 point (crowd control: slows enemies, +20% damage taken, -33% defense)
Eldritch Tree (Secondary)
  • Mirrored Blades — 20 points (burst physical damage, single target)
  • Levitation Mastery — 1 point (+25% damage, +40% AR, +5% crit)
  • Hex: Bane — 1 point (weapon hex, adds magic damage)
  • Blade Warp — 1 point (mobility — hurl weapon, teleport to impact)
  • Psychic Ward — 1 point (damage absorb shield)
  • Eldritch Blast — 1 point (prerequisite for Mirrored Blades)
Demon Tree (Utility)
  • Demonic Mastery — 1 point (enhances any summoned demons)
  • Summon Goatman — 1 point (meat shield)

Stat Points

Strength: Minimum for gear (Spirit Monarch needs 156 STR). Dexterity: Base unless going max block. Vitality: All remaining points — Warlocks get 3 life per VIT point. Energy: Base — Miasma Chain costs 4.5 mana and Mirrored Blades costs 5, both very efficient. Spirit + Insight merc covers mana needs.

Mercenary

Act 2 NM Defensive (Holy Freeze) for crowd control that pairs with Sigil: Lethargy. Slowed, weakened mobs sit in your Miasma Chain clouds longer. For pure damage, Act 2 NM Offensive (Might) boosts Mirrored Blades physical output. Budget merc: Insight (mana regen) + Treachery (Fade proc for resists) + Tal Rasha helm. Endgame: Infinity (Conviction helps vs magic resistant mobs) + Fortitude + Andariel's Visage.

Playstyle Tips

  • Core loop: cast Miasma Chain on a target in a pack. The shadowy chains emit miasma between you and the target, dealing magic DoT per second to everything in the cloud. Reposition to maximize the chain's path through dense groups.
  • Drop Sigil: Lethargy under packs before casting Miasma Chain — the +20% damage taken debuff and -33% defense amplify both the DoT and your Mirrored Blades hits.
  • Switch to Mirrored Blades for bosses and champions. The mirror duplicates each deal 60% of your weapon damage — with high +skills and IAS, this is strong sustained single-target DPS.
  • Hex: Bane adds flat magic damage to your weapon attacks, which stacks with Mirrored Blades. Keep it active (144 second duration).
  • Use Blade Warp for mobility — it's not Teleport, but it gets you through doors, walls, and repositions you mid-fight.
  • Psychic Ward absorbs incoming damage and stuns melee attackers. Cast it proactively before engaging dangerous packs.
  • Best areas: dense pack zones where Miasma Chain clouds overlap multiple enemies — Chaos Sanctuary, Worldstone Keep, Cows. Avoid wide open areas where mobs spread out.

Leveling Progression

The Miasma Chain Warlock uses both Chaos and Eldritch trees:

Levels 1-11 — Start with Miasma Bolt (lvl 1) and Hex: Bane (lvl 1). Miasma Bolt is your early AoE. Put points into Levitation Mastery for passive damage. Cleave (lvl 6) provides melee AoE. Sigil: Lethargy (lvl 6) for crowd control.
Levels 12-17 — Miasma Chain unlocks at 12. Start investing heavily. Echoing Strike (lvl 12) also available as melee option. Hex: Purge (lvl 12) adds explosion procs to hexed enemies.
Levels 18-29 — Blade Warp (lvl 18) for mobility. Psychic Ward (lvl 18) for defense. Enhanced Entropy (lvl 24) starts scaling your miasma radius and duration. Max Miasma Chain first, then Miasma Bolt for synergy.
Levels 30+ — Mirrored Blades (lvl 30) unlocks your single-target burst. Max Enhanced Entropy → Mirrored Blades. Target FCR breakpoints with Spirit weapon + shield. Farm Hell with dual damage coverage.

How Miasma Chain Works

Miasma Chain (Chaos tree, lvl 12) summons shadowy chains that connect you to the target. The chains emit a suffocating miasma cloud along the path between you and the target, dealing magic damage per second to any enemy standing in the cloud. At level 20 the magic damage and DoT scale significantly.

Enhanced Entropy (Chaos tree, lvl 24, passive) is the key scaling passive. Each point increases miasma radius by 0.2 yards and adds 0.2 seconds of miasma duration. At 20 points, the miasma clouds are significantly wider and last much longer — enemies can't escape the DoT zone.

The -enemy magic resistance mod on items like Sling ring (-3-5%), Ars Dul'Mephistos grimoire (-10-20%), and Hellwarden's Will (-5-8%) directly amplifies Miasma Chain's magic DoT. Stacking these mods is how the build reaches endgame damage levels.

Best Farming Areas

CHAOS SANCTUARY

Dense packs in corridors. Miasma Chain clouds fill the narrow spaces. Sigil: Lethargy debuffs entire groups. Mirrored Blades handles seal bosses. Excellent density for this build.

WORLDSTONE KEEP

High density, tight corridors. Miasma DoT stacks well. Magic damage handles most monster types. Good XP for levels 90+.

COWS

Massive density, no magic immunes. Miasma Chain + Miasma Bolt tears through cow packs. One of the fastest cow killers among Warlock builds.
