Summoner Warlock Build Guide

Demon Summoner · Summon Defiler · Bind Demon · Patch 2.7 · D2R

Overview

The Summoner Warlock — often called the Demon Summoner — is the undisputed king of self-found play in Diablo II: Resurrected. Unlike any other build in the game, this Warlock doesn't rely on rare items or runewords to function at peak efficiency. Instead, it weaponizes the game's own monsters against themselves. Summon Defiler is your primary crowd control summon: Defilers chain nearby enemies, holding them in place and sharing damage between the chained group. Your bound demon — enslaved via Bind Demon — tears through those helpless, chained enemies with overwhelming force. The result is a build that is simultaneously one of the tankiest, one of the most AoE-efficient, and one of the easiest to gear.

Blood Oath (passive) reduces incoming damage to your demons by binding their lifeforce to yours. Demonic Mastery (passive) scales all your summoned demons' effectiveness. Engorge lets you feed corpses to your demon for healing and empowerment. At endgame, Consume lets you sacrifice a demon for powerful personal buffs — life, run/walk speed, and more. Bind Demon forces an injured super unique demon to fight for you, adding an elite-tier demon to your army.

Skill Allocation

Max (20 points each)

Summon Defiler — 20 points

Your primary crowd control summon. Defilers chain nearby enemies together and share damage taken between chained targets — when one chained mob takes damage, all chained mobs share it. Higher skill levels increase chain range and the number of enemies that can be chained simultaneously. The cornerstone of the Summoner Warlock's pack clearing ability.

Bind Demon — 20 points

Force an injured super unique demon to fight for you. At high skill levels with Demonic Mastery, a bound demon becomes an extremely powerful single combat unit. Bind Demon is the primary DPS source — the bound demon attacks enemies directly and scales with your Demonic Mastery investment. Requires the target demon to be injured before casting.

Demonic Mastery — 20 points (passive)

Passive skill that enhances all summoned and bound demons. Each level improves demon damage, life, and resistances. Your primary "damage investment" as a Summoner Warlock — every point here directly scales your Bound Demon's output. Pair with +skills gear to push this well above 20 effective levels.

Blood Oath — 20 points (passive)

Passive: binds your demon's lifeforce to yours, providing damage reduction. Higher levels increase the damage reduction your demons receive. This is why the Summoner Warlock is so durable — your demons absorb enormous damage and Blood Oath caps how much they take per hit.

1 Point (Utility & Prerequisites)

Summon Goatman — 1 point — Prerequisite for higher Demon tree skills. Goatmen are basic summons that serve as meat shields and Engorge/Consume fodder.
Death Mark — 1 point — Forces a demon to teleport to and attack a specific enemy. Directs your Bound Demon to focus a priority target or boss. Essential tactical tool.
Summon Tainted — 1 point — Fire-based summon. Adds a fire damage dealer to your army. Serves as Engorge fodder and provides supplementary fire damage.
Engorge — 1 point — Feed a corpse to your demon to heal and empower it. Use to keep your Bound Demon healthy between fights without needing to resummon.
Consume — 1 point — Sacrifice a demon for personal power buffs: life, run/walk speed, and other bonuses. Use before tough boss encounters. Sacrifice a Goatman, not your Bound Demon.
Blood Boil — 1 point (optional) — Erupt a demon's blood to damage nearby enemies. Useful as a supplementary damage tool against clustered packs. One point with +skills is enough for meaningful AoE output.

Stat Points

Strength: Minimum for gear. Dexterity: Base — Warlocks in summoner builds don't need attack rating. Vitality: All remaining points. Demons inherit bonuses from your stats, and more life means your Blood Oath damage reduction scales better. Energy: Base — summon skills are relatively mana-efficient at high skill levels.

Mercenary

Act 2 NM Offensive (Might aura) for additional physical damage support to your Bound Demon. Your merc is secondary here — your demons do the heavy lifting. Equip with Fortitude armor and Andariel's Visage for the standard setup. If you're struggling with physical immune remnants, consider an Act 2 merc with an Infinity polearm once rune budget allows. Budget players: Insight + Treachery + any helm with life leech.

How Summon Defiler Chaining Works

Defilers chain nearby enemies together and share incoming damage between chained targets. When your Bound Demon attacks one chained mob, the damage spreads to the entire chained group. The more enemies chained, the faster the pack dies. Higher Summon Defiler skill levels increase chain range and the number of simultaneous chains. Multiple Defilers stack their chains independently.

Demonic Mastery (20 points) directly scales your Bound Demon's damage and survivability — this is your primary DPS investment. Blood Oath passive reduces damage your demons receive per hit, making the Bound Demon nearly unkillable in normal pack encounters. Your job as the Warlock is to direct the demons with Death Mark and keep them healthy with Engorge. The demons do the actual fighting.

Playstyle Tips

  • Keep multiple Defilers active — they chain independently and multiply your crowd control coverage across larger packs.
  • Use Death Mark to direct your Bound Demon to priority targets like elite champions or boss monsters.
  • Feed corpses to your Bound Demon with Engorge between fights to keep it at full health — far more efficient than summoning a replacement.
  • Before tough encounters, Consume a Goatman for the personal power buffs (life, run/walk speed). Never Consume your Bound Demon.
  • Blood Boil (1pt) is your direct AoE contribution when chained packs cluster — erupt a Goatman's blood in the middle of the chained pack for supplementary fire damage.
  • Enigma's Teleport instantly repositions your entire demon army — huge quality of life for fast clearing.
  • Stack +All Skills gear in every slot. Every additional skill level on Demonic Mastery directly translates to demon power.

Leveling Progression

Levels 1–11 — Invest in Demonic Mastery (available level 1 passive) and Summon Goatman. Let your Goatmen tank. Cast support from behind. Extremely safe leveling experience.
Levels 12–17 — Summon Defiler (lvl 12) and Blood Oath passive (lvl 6) come online. Your demons become significantly more durable. Begin chaining packs with Defilers and use Death Mark to focus elite targets.
Levels 18–29 — Summon Defiler (lvl 18) and Blood Boil (lvl 18) open up more options. Engorge (lvl 24) lets you sustain your Bound Demon with corpses. Max Demonic Mastery → Blood Oath → Summon Defiler.
Levels 30+ — Bind Demon (lvl 30) and Consume (lvl 30) become available. Max Bind Demon to maximize the bound demon's power. Target Enigma (Teleport repositions your entire army). With Enigma and maxed skills, the Summoner Warlock clears all of Hell.

Best Farming Areas

ALL OF HELL

This build has no meaningful elemental weakness since your demons deal physical damage. Travincal, Chaos Sanctuary, Worldstone Keep, Baal runs — all strong farming targets. Chain Defilers hold packs while your Bound Demon clears them efficiently.

PHYSICAL IMMUNE HANDLING

Physical immune mobs are the one challenge. Bind Demon can use a super unique immune-type demon against its own kind. Blood Boil (1pt) deals fire damage for immune bypass. An Infinity merc handles all remaining immunes at endgame. Budget: Blood Boil and strategic avoidance.
