War Cry Barbarian Build Guide

By the DiabloBytes team · Updated March 2026

Overview

The War Cry Barbarian — universally called the "Singer" — is one of the most uniquely powerful builds in D2R. War Cry deals Magic damage in an AoE radius and stuns every enemy it hits. With enough Faster Cast Rate, you maintain permanent stun lock on entire screens while building toward the highest Magic Find of any build in the game.

The Singer's real strength is target farming elite packs. With Enigma's Teleport, you can cover the entire map in seconds, Telestomping elite packs with War Cry while your Might merc cleans up. Between Find Item (Hork) and 500%+ Magic Find stacked on gear, this Barbarian effectively double-rolls every elite pack's loot table. It's only rivaled by even more niche builds for pure Magic Find output.

In a party, the build is transformational: Battle Orders doubles your team's life and mana, Shout boosts defense, War Cry stuns everything before it can act, and Taunt manipulates dangerous ranged targets. A good Singer in a full party run makes everyone feel unkillable. Solo play is viable but slower — War Cry damage doesn't scale as aggressively as physical builds. B tier is fair for solo; in parties it arguably pushes A.

Patch 2.4 note: Grim Ward was added to the game and is now a key utility skill for this build — it reduces enemy physical resistance and can break physical immunity, dramatically helping your Might merc clean up resistant packs.

Skill Allocation

War Cry — 20 points (max first)
AoE magic damage + stun. Your primary offensive skill and the reason enemies can't touch you. Max this first — higher level War Cry extends stun duration, increases damage, and widens radius. All synergies multiply from its base.
Battle Cry — 20 points (synergy)
War Cry synergy for increased magic damage output AND reduces enemy defense and damage. Max this second — every point provides dual value as a damage multiplier and a debuff tool for tougher targets and act bosses.
Taunt — 20 points (synergy)
Critical synergy to War Cry. Each point into Taunt increases War Cry's magic damage. Also works as crowd control — forces ranged/fleeing monsters to approach your Barbarian in melee range, making them easy War Cry targets. Essential for both damage and control.
Battle Orders — 20 points
Life/mana/stamina multiplier for entire party. The reason every party invites a Singer. Max it — higher levels give dramatically more life/mana scaling.
Howl — max (synergy)
Howl synergizes with War Cry and is extremely useful solo. Use Howl to scatter non-elite trash around elite packs — isolate the boss monsters for Find Item targeting, saving time on trash clears.
Find Item — 1+ points
Hork on elite corpses after the kill. With 500%+ MF stacked, this is a transformative loot multiplier. At least 1 point required; more points on secondary skill allocation pass if you have them.
Grim Ward — 1 point
Added in Patch 2.4 — do not skip. Cast on a monster corpse to apply fear + physical resistance reduction to nearby enemies. Combined with your Might merc, this can break physical immunities and dramatically accelerate clear speed on stubborn packs.
Battle Command — 1 point
+1 to all skills for party. Always cast before Battle Orders and War Cry for the extra skill-level boost on your buffs and damage. Cast it twice — the buff refreshes.
Berserk — 1 point
Emergency button for magic immune + physical immune enemies. One point with +skills gear is enough. If you encounter a magic/physical dual immune, swap to Berserk briefly then back to War Cry spam.
Leap / Increased Speed / Natural Resistance / Iron Skin — 1 point each
Leap for mobility and knockback (Telestomping elite packs at high skill levels pushes everything on screen into hit recovery). Increased Speed, Natural Resistance, Iron Skin are standard quality-of-life passives.

Stat Points

Strength
Enough to equip gear. Enigma gives +1 str per level (up to +99 at level 99), reducing your base investment significantly. Typical base is 45–80.
Dexterity
Enough for gear requirements only, OR enough for 75% block with Stormshield on the tanky variant (requires ~130 dex). Standard Singer uses base dex — War Cry stun provides more safety than block.
Vitality
Target 2,500–3,500 life with BO active. War Cry spam costs significant mana — don't neglect life for mana. Bosses and stun-immune monsters can hit you, so solid life is non-negotiable.
Energy
None base initially. For the high FCR variant (200% FCR), some energy investment via "shift-click" Energy to sustain rapid War Cry casting costs. Otherwise cover mana with BO + Insight merc + gear mana regeneration.

Gear

Weapon
Budget → BiS
Heart of the Oak (Ko Vex Pul Thul) in a Flail — +3 all skills, 40% FCR, resists. The standard BiS weapon. Dual Spirit Crystal Swords are an excellent budget option (high FCR, skills, FHR, mana — Spirit Barb is a well-known starter). Wizardspike is another strong FCR option. The weapon matters for FCR and skill levels — raw damage is irrelevant.
Shield
Budget → BiS
Spirit runeword in a Monarch — +2 all skills, 35% FCR, mana, FHR. Combined with Heart of the Oak you hit 75% FCR. For the tanky variant: Stormshield with Um rune for 75% block + PDR.
Helm
Budget → BiS
Arreat's Face with Um rune (resists) or Cham (cannot be frozen) — +2 Barb skills, FHR, life leech. Harlequin Crest (Shako) with Cham rune is a strong Magic Find alternative — less skills but 50–74% MF.
Armor / Rings / Other
Armor: Enigma — Teleport is vital. Repositioning yourself AND your merc with Teleport makes the Singer dramatically more efficient than any other armor option. Rings: Stone of Jordan × 2 (high MF, +1 skills) or Bul-Kathos Wedding Band (life, +1 skills). Amulet: Rare +2 Barb skills with FCR and resists. Belt: Arachnid Mesh (+1 all skills, 20% FCR, slows target). Gloves: Magefist or Trang-Oul's Claws (FCR + resists). Boots: Sandstorm Trek (vita, FHR, resists) or rare tri-resist with FHR. Secondary swap: Call to Arms + Spirit for Battle Orders prebuffing in a dedicated prebuff setup.

Faster Cast Rate Breakpoints

War Cry casting speed is determined by FCR frames. More FCR = faster stun lock:

0% FCR13 frames
9% FCR12 frames
20% FCR11 frames
37% FCR10 frames
63% FCR9 frames — recommended minimum
105% FCR8 frames — standard BiS target
152% FCR7 frames
200% FCR5 frames (max MF variant)

105% FCR on the primary weapon swap is the standard target. HotO + Spirit alone gives 75% FCR — add Arachnid Mesh (20%) + Magefist (20%) to hit 105%+.

Mercenary

Act 2 Nightmare Offensive — Might Aura (recommended)
Might is the preferred merc — his physical damage is what actually kills things, and Might aura dramatically amplifies that. Your War Cry stuns and softens; the Might merc finishes. Gear with The Reaper's Toll Thresher (33% Decrepify on striking — slows, increases physical damage, breaks some PIs) + Andariel's Visage + Ethereal Fortitude Sacred Armor. The Decrepify proc from Reaper's Toll is extremely valuable for physical resistant packs.
Budget — Insight Merc (Starter)
While gearing up: Act 2 Nightmare Defensive (Holy Freeze) with Insight for Meditation aura. War Cry spamming drains mana fast — Insight's Meditation passive provides substantial mana regeneration. Upgrade to Might + Reaper's Toll when available.

Playstyle Tips

  • Buff order every run: Battle Command (×2) → Battle Orders → Shout. Never skip — the stack from Battle Command makes your BO and Shout significantly stronger.
  • War Cry permanently stun-locks most enemies — spam it continuously at 105% FCR and almost nothing can attack you. The stun duration overlaps with cast time.
  • Use Teleport from Enigma to Telestamp elite packs: Teleport onto a pack → immediately spam War Cry to stun everything before they can react. Then Hork the bodies after.
  • Howl away trash mobs to isolate elite pack bosses — this saves you from wasting time stunning non-valuable targets and makes Find Item much more efficient.
  • Use Taunt on ranged monsters (archers, spear cats, fallen shamans) — it forces them to approach you in melee range where War Cry can reliably stun them.
  • Grim Ward on the first corpse of a pack reduces nearby enemies' physical resistance — cast it as soon as something dies so your merc's damage is amplified for the rest of the pack.
  • Prioritize hunting Super Unique monsters — your MF and Find Item give the most value against high-quality targets. Pindle, Eldritch, Shenk, and Council Members are ideal.
  • The Singer is the safest Barbarian for Hardcore — permanent stun, Teleport escape, and Howl as an emergency scatter means near-zero death risk when played properly.
  • Mana management: at 105% FCR you drain mana rapidly. Stack mana regeneration on gear, use Insight merc during budget phase, and shift-click Energy in the high FCR variant.

Leveling Progression

War Cry unlocks at level 30 — level as melee, respec at 30:

Levels 1–11 — Bash into Double Swing. Start investing in Mace Mastery or the weapon mastery for your leveling weapon.
Levels 12–29 — Double Throw or Frenzy for movement. Fill prerequisite skills. Battle Orders at 24 for survivability. Get Howl, Shout, Battle Cry as prereqs for War Cry.
Level 30 — Respec — Full respec into War Cry at the Den of Evil quest. Max War Cry first. The build is immediately viable — War Cry stun + merc kills everything efficiently.
Levels 31–65 — Max War Cry → Battle Cry synergy → Taunt synergy → Battle Orders → Howl synergy. Farm dual Spirit runewords for FCR. Budget setup: 2× Spirit Crystal Swords (easy access, high FCR).
Levels 75+ (endgame) — Heart of the Oak + Spirit Monarch for 75% FCR base. Add Arachnid Mesh + Magefist to hit 105%+ FCR. Acquire Enigma for Teleport. Stack MF gear. Upgrade merc to Might + Reaper's Toll. Farm Pindleskin, Eldritch, Nihlathak, and Chaos Sanctuary endlessly.
