D2R Socket Guide — Everything You Need to Know

Sockets are the foundation of D2R gearing. Every runeword, every jewel slot, every gem — it all starts with understanding how sockets work. This guide covers max sockets for every base, how Larzuk works, cube recipes, and the famous Normal Cows trick.

How Sockets Work

Every base item in D2R has a maximum number of sockets it can roll. This is hardcoded in the game data — a Monarch shield can have up to 4 sockets, a Phase Blade up to 6, and so on.

There are three ways to add sockets to items:

  1. Natural drops — Items can drop already socketed from monsters
  2. Larzuk quest reward — Act 5 quest "Siege on Harrogath" reward
  3. Horadric Cube recipes — Specific recipes add random sockets

The number of sockets you get depends on the item's quality level (qlvl), item level (ilvl), and the method used to socket it.

Critical: You can only socket a normal (white/gray) item with cube recipes. Socketed, magic, rare, unique, and set items cannot be socketed via cube. Larzuk can socket any quality except socketed items.

Larzuk Quest Reward

Larzuk is the Act 5 NPC who rewards you with a free socket after completing "Siege on Harrogath" (kill Shenk the Overseer). You get this quest once per difficulty — 3 total per character.

ITEM QUALITY SOCKETS ADDED NOTES
Normal (white/gray) MAX sockets Based on ilvl — gives the maximum possible for that ilvl range
Magic (blue) 1-2 random Random between 1 and 2
Rare (yellow) 1 Always exactly 1
Unique (gold) 1 Always exactly 1
Set (green) 1 Always exactly 1
Pro Tip: Save your Larzuk quests for items where you need EXACT socket counts — like a 4os Monarch for Spirit or a 5os Phase Blade for Grief. Use cube recipes for situations where you're OK with random results.

Cube Socket Recipes

The Horadric Cube has four socket recipes — one for each major item category. All require the item to be normal (white) quality and unsocketed.

⚔️ Weapons
Ral + Amn + Perfect Amethyst + Weapon
Result: 1-6 sockets (random, capped at item max)
🛡️ Body Armor
Tal + Thul + Perfect Topaz + Armor
Result: 1-6 sockets (random, capped at item max)
⛑️ Helms
Ral + Thul + Perfect Sapphire + Helm
Result: 1-6 sockets (random, capped at item max)
🔰 Shields
Tal + Amn + Perfect Ruby + Shield
Result: 1-6 sockets (random, capped at item max)

ilvl Socket Thresholds

When using cube recipes, the number of sockets you can get depends on the item's ilvl (item level). The cube recipe rolls a random number between 1 and the maximum sockets allowed for that ilvl range:

ILVL RANGE MAX SOCKETS (CUBE) EXAMPLE SOURCE
1 – 25 1-2 Normal Act 1-3 monsters
26 – 40 1-3 Normal Cows (alvl 28), Normal Act 4-5
41+ 1-max Nightmare+, Hell, any high-level area

This is capped at the item's inherent max sockets. A Dusk Shroud has max 4 sockets, so even at ilvl 41+ the cube recipe gives 1-4, never more.

Larzuk is different: Larzuk always gives the maximum sockets possible for the item's ilvl range. No randomness — if a Crystal Sword has ilvl 28, Larzuk gives exactly 4 sockets.

The Normal Cows Crystal Sword Trick

This is the most famous socketing trick in D2R and it's how most players get their first 4-socket Crystal Sword for Spirit.

How It Works

  1. Go to Normal Cow Level (area level 28)
  2. Find a Crystal Sword drop (white/gray, NOT magic/rare)
  3. The Crystal Sword's ilvl = 28 (from the area level)
  4. Take it to Larzuk — he gives MAX sockets for ilvl 26-40
  5. Crystal Sword at ilvl 26-40 = 4 sockets
  6. Insert Tal + Thul + Ort + Amn = Spirit!
Warning: If you use a Crystal Sword from Hell difficulty (ilvl 41+), Larzuk will give 6 sockets — too many for Spirit! Always use Normal Cows for guaranteed 4os.

Why not use the cube recipe? Because cube gives 1-4 sockets randomly at ilvl 28. That's only a 25% chance of getting 4. Larzuk gives 4 guaranteed.

This same principle applies to Broad Swords and Long Swords from Normal Cows — they also roll 4 sockets from Larzuk at ilvl 28.

Max Sockets: Body Armor

Body armor can have up to 4 sockets. Most elite body armors max at 4, most normal/exceptional at 3-4.

Max Sockets: Helms

Helms max at 3 sockets for most bases. Circlets and class-specific helms (Barb helms, Druid pelts) also cap at 3. Bone Visage (elite) is the only helm with a practical 3-socket setup for Dream.

Max Sockets: Shields

Shields max at 4 sockets. The Monarch is the only non-Paladin shield that can get 4 sockets, which is why every non-Paladin caster needs 156 strength for Spirit. Paladin shields (Sacred Targe, Vortex Shield, etc.) get 4 sockets at much lower strength requirements.

Max Sockets: Weapons

Weapons have the widest range — from 1 to 6 sockets depending on the base. Swords and axes tend to have the most sockets (5-6), while daggers and wands have fewer (1-2). Polearms max at 4-6 depending on the base.

The most important distinction: Phase Blades have 6 max sockets but most Phase Blade runewords need 5 (Grief, Death). This means you cannot use Larzuk on a Phase Blade for Grief — Larzuk gives 6os. You must use the cube recipe and get lucky.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add sockets to a unique item?

Yes, but only via Larzuk — and it always gives exactly 1 socket. Cube recipes do NOT work on unique items. This is how people socket Shako, Harlequin Crest, Arreat's Face, etc.

Can I remove runes from a socketed item?

Yes — use the Hel + Scroll of Town Portal + Socketed Item cube recipe. This destroys all gems/runes/jewels in the item but keeps the sockets. The item can be re-socketed with new runes.

Why does my Crystal Sword from Hell have 6 sockets from Larzuk?

Because its ilvl is 41+ (from Hell area levels). Larzuk gives the maximum possible sockets for the ilvl range, and Crystal Swords have 6 max sockets at ilvl 41+. For a 4-socket Crystal Sword, use one from Normal Cows (ilvl 28).

How do I get a 5-socket Phase Blade for Grief?

You cannot use Larzuk — he gives 6 sockets on Phase Blade. Use the cube recipe (Ral + Amn + Perfect Amethyst + Phase Blade) and roll for 5. It's random 1-6, so you have a ~16.7% chance per attempt. Find Phase Blades in Hell Act 4+.

Does ethereal affect socket count?

No. Ethereal items follow the exact same socket rules as non-ethereal. Ethereal is cosmetic + 50% more damage/defense with no repair. The only difference is that ethereal items can't be used on your character without self-repair (like Zod rune or certain uniques).
