Colossal Ancients — D2R's True Endgame Has Arrived

By the DiabloBytes team · 10 min read

Baal is dead. Diablo is dead. The Prime Evils have been slain a hundred thousand times across a hundred thousand characters. And yet, Sanctuary never truly had an endgame — not a real one that demanded your absolute best. Reign of the Warlock changes that with the introduction of the Colossal Ancients, and it's not pretty.

The Lore — What the Worldstone Did to Them

When Tyrael shattered the Worldstone at the summit of Mount Arreat, the blast didn't just destroy a relic — it irradiated everything in its vicinity with a corruption that defied both angelic and demonic understanding. The mountain itself cracked. The Barbarian homeland was shattered. And the three guardians bound to protect the Worldstone — Madawc, Talic, and Korlic — were not released from their duty. They were warped by it.

For years, lore hunters speculated about what happened to the Ancients after Arreat's destruction. Were they freed? Were they dead? Reign of the Warlock provides the answer, and it's bleak: they were changed. The Worldstone's shattering didn't kill them — it fused them with the raw, unfiltered energy of the stone itself. They grew. They mutated. They became something that no longer remembers what it once guarded.

The Colossal Ancients now stand at roughly three times the height of their original forms. Their weapons have fused to their bodies. Their eyes glow with the sickly blue-white light of corrupted Worldstone energy. They don't speak the ancient oaths anymore — they barely seem to register that you're there until you trigger the encounter. Then they remember exactly what they were made to do.

Requirements — How to Unlock the Encounter

The Colossal Ancients are not accessible through normal progression. You won't stumble into them on your way to Baal. This encounter is gated behind a series of requirements that ensure you're genuinely ready — or at least think you are.

  • Complete Hell Difficulty You must have defeated Baal on Hell difficulty on the character you wish to attempt the encounter.
  • Collect All Five Corrupted Relics One relic drops from each act's final boss on Hell: Andariel's Brand, Duriel's Marrow, Mephisto's Seal, Diablo's Ember, and Baal's Eye. All five must be in your inventory simultaneously.
  • Return to Arreat Summit Travel to the Arreat Summit waypoint (Act V, Area 7). The Colossal Ancients now occupy this space instead of the original encounter.
  • Minimum Level 85 Recommended The game does not enforce a level gate, but anything below 85 will result in rapid death against all three guardians simultaneously.

The Fight — What You're Up Against

Each Colossal Ancient retains the core identity of their original form but amplifies it to a degree that demands specific counter-strategies. Unlike the original Ancients, they are not fought one at a time by design — all three are active simultaneously, and their abilities interact with each other.

Colossal Madawc — the berserker — now throws corrupted Worldstone shards instead of axes. These shards embed in the ground and explode after a short delay, covering large areas of the arena. His Leap Attack creates shockwaves that travel outward from impact points. He is the most mobile of the three and the first priority target for most builds.

Colossal Talic — the whirlwind — now leaves a trail of corrupted energy as he spins. Standing in this trail deals massive physical damage over time. His whirlwind radius has tripled. He cannot be slowed or frozen by any conventional means — the corruption has made him immune to cold effects entirely.

Colossal Korlic — the leap attacker — now has a charge-up mechanic. Every third leap, he channels briefly and unleashes a ground-slam that deals damage equal to a percentage of your maximum life. This is the ability that kills most first-time attempts. Learning the timing of his charge-up and repositioning before the slam is the single most important skill in this fight.

⚠ Dynamic Modifiers

The Colossal Ancients gain random modifiers each session, similar to Diablo Clone but more extensive. Possible modifiers include Magic Immune, Extra Fast, Aura Enchanted (with Worldstone Aura), and Spectral Hit. Check the modifier display at the top of the arena before engaging.

Strategy — How to Actually Win

The single most important strategic decision is target priority. The community has largely settled on Madawc → Korlic → Talic as the optimal kill order, primarily because Madawc's shard fields make the arena progressively more dangerous the longer he lives. Clearing his shards from the field is the difference between a manageable fight and a chaotic one.

Resistances matter more here than anywhere else in the game. All three Colossal Ancients deal physical damage as their primary source, but Korlic's ground slam applies Worldstone damage — a new damage type introduced in Reign of the Warlock that bypasses physical resistance entirely. Stacking maximum life and life leech is the defensive approach most successful clears have used.

Teleport — whether native to the Sorceress, via the Enigma runeword, or through the new Warlock's Dimensional Rift ability — is essentially mandatory. The arena is large, but Talic's whirlwind trails will restrict your movement significantly over the course of the fight. Being able to teleport out of a trail at a moment's notice has saved more runs than any other single mechanic.

For loot filter users: the Worldstone Shards and unique jewels dropped by the Colossal Ancients have specific item codes in the filter system. Make sure your filter highlights these — they can be easy to miss in the chaos of the fight. Our loot filter builder has a dedicated Colossal Ancients preset.

Rewards — Why You're Doing This

The Colossal Ancients drop the best loot in the game, period. Beyond the standard Hell-level drops (which are already excellent given the area level), they have a dedicated drop table that includes:

  • 6 Unique Jewels The Corrupted Six are exclusive to this encounter. Each provides a unique combination of modifiers unavailable on any other item in the game, including the coveted Worldstone Resonance prefix.
  • Worldstone Shards A crafting material used in the new Worldstone Crafting recipes. Shards can be combined with existing items to add Worldstone-damage modifiers, or used in the Horadric Cube for new transmutation recipes.
  • High Rune Guarantee Each kill guarantees at least one rune of Ist quality or higher from the boss loot pool. Not a chance — a guarantee. This alone makes farming them worthwhile for endgame crafters.
  • Colossal's Blessing Buff On kill, your character receives a 30-minute buff that increases Magic Find by 25% and Experience gain by 15%. This buff persists through death and stacks with MF gear.

The Verdict

Diablo II has always been a game about the journey, not the destination. The loot treadmill, the build experimentation, the infinite replayability — these are what keep players coming back after two decades. But it never had a true pinnacle encounter. The original Ancients were a speed bump before Baal. The Ubers were a niche challenge for specific builds.

The Colossal Ancients feel like what Diablo II's endgame was always supposed to be: a fight that demands your best gear, your best play, and your full understanding of the game's systems. The lore connection to the original Ancients makes it feel earned. The rewards make it worth repeating. And the dynamic modifiers ensure it never quite gets stale.

This is D2R's endgame. Finally.
