Reign of the Warlock is Live — Everything You Need to Know
By the DiabloBytes team · 12 min read
After years of community requests, modding experiments, and two official expansions on the original Diablo II, Reign of the Warlock has arrived as the definitive expansion for Diablo II: Resurrected. It's March 4, 2026, the servers are live, and Sanctuary has changed forever.
The Warlock — A New Force in Sanctuary
The Warlock is the first new playable class to join Diablo II in over two decades. Built from the ground up by a team that deeply respected the original game's feel, the Warlock is a dark summoner who enters pacts with demonic entities to gain power. This isn't the Necromancer's calculated mastery of the dead — this is raw, dangerous bargaining with forces that barely tolerate your existence.
Three skill trees define the Warlock: Infernal Pacts, Shadow Weaving, and Demonic Rites. Each tree provides a radically different playstyle, from a tanky pact-fueled bruiser to a long-range shadow bolt caster to a minion-heavy ritualist that blurs the line between Necromancer and Sorceress.
The signature skill — Echoing Strike — has already become a community favorite. A melee attack that echoes across nearby enemies with shadow damage, it scales in unexpected ways with the Pact mechanics, making for some truly explosive moment-to-moment gameplay.
Loot Filters — Finally
The most requested feature in D2 history is live. Loot filters are now a native part of Diablo II: Resurrected, implemented in a way that respects the original game's philosophy while providing the flexibility players have demanded since the early 2000s.
The system uses a text-based filter file (similar to Path of Exile's implementation) that you can write manually or generate using an external tool. Every item name, color, sound alert, and visibility rule is configurable. You can hide Tattered Armor, highlight Set items in bright orange, and make high runes play a custom sound — all without any third-party software running alongside the game.
Build Your Filter
Use our visual loot filter builder to create the perfect filter without manually writing filter syntax.
D2R Loot Filter Configurator →Colossal Ancients — The True Endgame
Beyond Baal lies something worse. The Colossal Ancients are not new enemies — they are the original Ancients, Madawc, Talic, and Korlic, twisted beyond recognition by an age of corruption. They now stand as D2R's true endgame challenge, requiring fully optimized builds and a deep understanding of the game's mechanics to overcome.
The Colossal Ancients encounter is not triggered through normal story progression. You'll need to assemble a specific set of corrupted relics across all five acts, then bring them to Arreat Summit in a complete state. The resulting encounter is dynamic — their abilities change between sessions, requiring adaptation rather than memorized patterns.
Advanced Stash Tabs & QoL Changes
Stash mules are dead. Reign of the Warlock introduces dedicated stash tabs for Materials, Gems, Runes, and Consumables, accessible from the main stash UI. Each tab has expanded capacity, and items of the appropriate type automatically have the option to be sent to their tab on pickup via the new item routing settings.
Additional quality-of-life improvements include an expanded shared stash (from 4 to 8 tabs), a revamped item tooltip system that shows more context about item values, and an offline mode that now fully syncs with online progress when reconnecting.
Era Partitions — Choose Your Diablo II
One of the most surprising additions is the Era Partition system. Players can now choose to play in three distinct game eras, each with their own separate ladder and character pool:
- ▸ Classic The original Diablo II experience, pre-Lord of Destruction. Seven acts, five classes, the purest form of the game.
- ▸ Resurrected The full D2R experience with all Lord of Destruction content, updated visuals, and all quality-of-life improvements up to Patch 2.7.
- ▸ Reign of the Warlock The complete current-day experience. All content, Warlock class, loot filters, advanced stash, and Colossal Ancients.
Steam Release — Infernal Edition
Simultaneous with the expansion launch, D2R has finally arrived on Steam. The Infernal Edition bundle includes the base game, Lord of Destruction, and Reign of the Warlock, along with exclusive cosmetics: the Abyssal Warlock appearance set, three exclusive pets, and the Infernal portrait frame.
Cross-progression with Battle.net is fully supported — your existing characters, stash, and settings migrate seamlessly. Steam achievements have also been added alongside an updated Battle.net achievement system.
