🏹 Diablo 1 Rogue Guide

The ranged specialist. Kite, shoot, survive. Source: Jarulf's Guide

This Diablo 1 Rogue guide covers the ranged specialist class — highest Dexterity, excellent at kiting enemies from a distance. She has the unique Trap Disarm ability and sits between the Warrior's tankiness and the Sorcerer's magic power. In skilled hands, the Rogue is arguably the safest class for clearing Hell difficulty in Diablo 1. Arrows are infinite in D1 (unlike D2), so you never run out of ammo.

Starting & Max Stats

Stat Start Max (no items)
Strength 20 55
Magic 15 70
Dexterity 30 250
Vitality 20 80
Life 45
Mana 22

Life per level: +2 per Vitality point, +1 per level
Mana per level: +2 per Magic point, +2 per level

Unique Skill — Trap Disarm

The Rogue can disarm trapped chests and sarcophagi, avoiding the explosion damage. A minor but useful ability in early game — it prevents cheap deaths from trapped Super Chests in the Catacombs. Other classes just eat the damage.

Stat Allocation

Dexterity is your god stat. It governs bow damage, To Hit chance, AND Armor Class. Pump Dex heavily. Magic should be your secondary stat — the Rogue's 70 max Magic is enough for most useful spells including Stone Curse and Teleport.

Some players go heavy Magic early for spell access, then pivot to Dex. This is viable because spells carry you through the mid-game efficiently. Vitality is more useful for Rogues than Warriors since your HP per level is lower (+1 vs Warrior's +2).

Essential Spells

Stone Curse Petrify enemies, shoot them safely. Same as Warrior — mandatory.
Teleport Critical for positioning and escapes. Blink away when surrounded.
Fire Wall Excellent synergy with kiting — drop walls and run through them.
Chain Lightning Great crowd control, hits multiple enemies at once.
Heal Saves potions during extended dungeon runs.

Gear Progression

🏰 Cathedral (Floors 1–4)

Short Bow → Long Bow. Anything with "of Fire" or "of Lightning" for added elemental damage. Leather Armor for mobility.

⛪ Catacombs & Caves (5–12)

Long War Bow is the goal. Look for "Merciless" prefix (+damage%) and "of the Heavens" (+damage). Studded Leather or better. Obsidian jewelry for resists.

🔥 Hell (Floors 13–16)

Merciless Long War Bow of the Heavens (best rare bow). Obsidian jewelry of the Zodiac. Best armor you can find with good AC and resists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Rogue hard to play in Diablo 1?

The Rogue has the highest skill ceiling of the three Diablo 1 classes. She rewards players who kite effectively — fire, move, fire, move — and punishes those who stand still. Once you master her movement patterns, she's arguably the safest class in the game. Trap Disarm also prevents cheap deaths from Super Chests.

What stat should I pump as the Rogue in Diablo 1?

Dexterity is the Rogue's god stat in Diablo 1. It increases bow damage, To Hit chance, AND Armor Class simultaneously — making it the most efficient stat in the game for her. Magic is a strong secondary for spell access. Avoid over-investing in Strength since you're not melee.

Do arrows run out in Diablo 1?

No — arrows are infinite in Diablo 1, unlike Diablo 2. You never need to buy or manage arrow supplies as the Rogue. This makes her much easier to sustain than equivalent ranged characters in later games in the series.
