🏚️ Diablo 1 Dungeon Guide

16 floors of descending madness in Diablo 1. Four distinct areas, each with unique monsters and atmosphere.

This Diablo 1 dungeon guide covers all 16 floors beneath the Tristram Cathedral. Each area has 4 floors with distinct tilesets, monster pools, and atmosphere. Layouts are randomly generated each game — no two runs are the same. The difficulty ramps steeply in Diablo 1: Cathedral is a warmup, Hell is a death sentence for the unprepared.

Area Overview

Cathedral
Floors 1–4 mlvl 1–6

The easiest area. Skeletons are weak to blunt weapons. Fallen Ones run when their leader dies. The Butcher lurks on floor 2.

Monsters: Fallen Ones, Zombies, Skeletons, Scavengers, Skeleton Archers

Catacombs
Floors 5–8 mlvl 7–14

First real difficulty spike. Hidden enemies are invisible until they attack — swing at empty doorways. Gargoyles turn to stone when not moving, making them hard to spot. Lightning Demons are extremely dangerous in groups.

Monsters: Horned Demons, Hidden (invisible), Gargoyles, Goatmen, Lightning Demons

Caves
Floors 9–12 mlvl 15–20

The caves are the widest open areas with long sight lines. Succubi spam Blood Star from off-screen — close the gap fast or use Fire Wall. Vipers are very fast and can overwhelm you. Balrogs hit extremely hard.

Monsters: Magma Demons, Vipers, Succubi, Balrogs, Overlords

Hell
Floors 13–16 mlvl 21–30

Maximum danger. Blood Knights have high HP, high damage, and fast attack. Advocates cast spells from range. Stone Curse is mandatory here. Floor 15 has Lazarus, floor 16 has Diablo. Every monster is deadly.

Monsters: Blood Knights, Advocates (mages), Snow Witches, Soul Burners, Doom Guards

Difficulty Levels

D1 has 3 difficulty levels in single player: Normal, Nightmare, and Hell. Unlike D2, you play through the same 16 floors again — but monsters are dramatically harder:

Normal

Standard monsters, learn the game

Nightmare

Monster HP, damage, and resistances increased significantly

Hell

Maximum stats. Most monsters have immunities. Stone Curse or die.

Dungeon Tips

  • Always clear systematically — hug walls, open every room one at a time. Never rush into darkness.
  • Doorways are chokepoints — use them. Monsters can only attack you one at a time through a door.
  • Hidden enemies are invisible on Catacombs floors. Swing at empty spaces near doorways.
  • Town Portal before exploring each new floor. You may need to escape.
  • Monster resistances increase per difficulty. What works in Normal may not work in Hell — bring multiple damage types.
