🔥 Diablo 1 Hellfire Expansion

Sierra's 1997 Diablo 1 Hellfire expansion. New class, new dungeons, new items, and hidden Easter eggs.

Overview

Hellfire was developed by Synergistic Software and published by Sierra Entertainment in 1997 — notably not by Blizzard. It adds one new playable class (the Monk), two new dungeon areas, new spells, items, and quests. Blizzard considered it semi-official — they didn't prevent its release but also didn't fully endorse it. It's included free with the GOG purchase of Diablo I.

Hellfire only got one patch (v1.01) and contains some bugs that were never fixed. It was based on Diablo v1.04 rather than the final v1.09, so some D1 bug fixes are missing.

🥋 The Monk

Stat Start Max
Strength 25 150
Magic 15 80
Dexterity 25 150
Vitality 20 80
Life 45
Mana 22

The Monk is a staff specialist — he swings staves faster than any other class and gets bonus damage with them. He has the unique Search ability that highlights items on the ground. He's a balanced hybrid between Warrior and Rogue, with decent stats across the board but no extreme strengths.

  • Unique skill: Search (highlights nearby items)
  • Best with staves — fastest swing speed of any class/weapon combo
  • Balanced stat caps allow decent spell access (80 Magic)
  • Plays similarly to a Warrior but with better reach (staff range)

New Dungeons

🐛 The Hive (4 floors)

Accessed from a hole in the ground near Tristram. Insect-themed dungeon with new monster types: Stingers, Arachnons, Torchants, Hork Spawn. The Defiler boss awaits on floor 4. Difficulty is roughly equivalent to Caves (floors 9-12).

💀 The Crypt (4 floors)

Accessed from the cemetery in Tristram. Undead-themed dungeon with Liches, Reapers, Crypt Demons, and Skullwings. Na-Krul is the final boss on floor 4 — one of the hardest fights in the game. Difficulty exceeds Hell floors 13-16.

New Items

  • Oils — consumables that permanently modify items (Accuracy, Mastery, Sharpness, etc.)
  • Runes — not like D2 runes! These are consumables that cast a spell once (Rune of Fire, Rune of Lightning, etc.)
  • New uniques — several new unique rings, amulets, and a few weapons added
  • Auric Amulet — increases gold pickup radius (quest reward)

New Spells

Lightning Wall Like Fire Wall but lightning damage. Useful against fire-resistant enemies.
Immolation Ring of fire around the caster. Good crowd control.
Warp Teleport to the nearest staircase. Fast dungeon navigation.
Reflect Reflects a percentage of damage back to attackers.
Berserk Increases damage but reduces AC. Risky but powerful.
Ring of Fire Expanding fire ring from the caster. Area denial.
Search Highlights items and objects on the ground. Monk's class skill.

🔓 Hidden Content (Easter Eggs)

The command.txt Trick

Hellfire has hidden content that Sierra cut before release. To unlock it, create a file called command.txt in your Hellfire directory with these lines:

cowquest
nestquest
bardtest
barbariantest
multitest
  • cowquest — Enables the Cow Quest (Theo/Jersey quest). A proto-Secret Cow Level!
  • nestquest — Enables the Hive nest quest line
  • bardtest — Unlocks the Bard class (uses Rogue sprite, can dual-wield)
  • barbariantest — Unlocks the Barbarian class (uses Warrior sprite, axes deal extra damage)
  • multitest — Enables multiplayer support for Hellfire (unofficial, unstable)

The Bard and Barbarian are incomplete — they use existing sprites and have basic stat adjustments. They're fun novelties but not balanced classes.
