Overview

The Blade Assassin — nicknamed the "Bladesin" — has a focused game plan: throw physical blade traps and clear density using Blade Fury for sustained single-target physical damage, Blade Sentinel for patrol traps, and Death Sentry for the AoE corpse explosion domino that finishes entire packs once the first kill lands. She's not the flashiest kit in D2R, but she's genuinely satisfying to master.

The Blade Skill package — Blade Fury, Blade Sentinel, and Blade Shield — all deal a fraction of your equipped weapon's damage as Physical Damage. This makes your weapon choice enormous: more weapon damage = more blade damage across all three skills simultaneously. Attack Rating is the other critical stat since Blade Fury has an AR check on every projectile it fires.

One critical mechanic to understand: Blade Shield destroys your weapon's durability with every hit. Never use Blade Shield on an Ethereal weapon or any runeword that cannot repair itself — you will permanently destroy it. The BiS weapon (Ethereal Plague Scissors Suwayyah) means you skip Blade Shield entirely in the endgame and let Blade Fury and Sentinel carry.

Physical immunity is the wall this build hits hardest. The Reaper's Toll mercenary's Decrepify curse frequently procs and reduces enemy physical resistance, handling many physical-immune situations without needing Infinity. Bone Break sunder charm breaks ALL physical immune monsters to 95% resistance if you have budget for it.

Skill Allocation

Put 1 point in Fade (and 6 total in Fire Blast for Death Sentry synergy), then max in order:

Blade Fury — 20 points
Primary damage skill. Launches a constant stream of blade projectiles dealing a fraction of weapon damage as Physical Damage. Each projectile has an AR check and can proc weapon on-hit effects (Decrepify from Reaper's Toll, Amplify Damage from Atma's Scarab). This is your main source of sustained single-target DPS.
Blade Shield — 20 points (synergy only — see warning)
⚠️ WARNING: Blade Shield consumes weapon durability with every hit. DO NOT activate it on Ethereal weapons or non-repairable runewords — you will permanently brick your gear. Max for synergy bonus to Blade Fury regardless, but only cast it if your weapon is indestructible, non-ethereal, or has repairs durability.
Blade Sentinel — 20 points
A trap that patrols back and forth, dealing weapon damage as Physical Damage. Up to 5 Sentinels active simultaneously — they each hit a target once per second, so 5 Sentinels = 5 hits/second passively. Great passive damage supplement while you fire Blade Fury. Synergy to Blade Fury.
Claw Mastery — 20 points (if using a claw weapon)
Passive AR, damage, and Critical Strike bonus when wielding Claw weapons. Only invest if your BiS weapon is a claw (e.g. Plague Scissors Suwayyah). If using an axe or sword, skip this and put points elsewhere.
Death Sentry — max remaining points
The AoE solution. Once a corpse appears, Death Sentry explodes it for 50% Physical / 50% Fire Damage in a chain reaction. Max for larger explosion radius. Fire Blast is also a synergy to Death Sentry's shot count — invest 6 total points in Fire Blast for extra Sentry shots.
1 pt each: Fade, Venom, Mind Blast, Cloak of Shadows, Dragon Flight, Shadow Master
Fade for PDR and resistances. Venom adds Poison Damage to Blade Fury projectiles. Dragon Flight teleports you to a target (mobility before Enigma). Mind Blast stuns/converts. Cloak of Shadows blinds ranged. Shadow Master acts as a meat shield.

Stat Points

Strength
Enough to equip your gear only. Blade damage scales with weapon stats, not Strength.
Dexterity
Enough for 75% Block Chance (endgame). Early game: add ~20 extra points if you're missing too many AR checks with Blade Fury. Dex adds AR for Assassins.
Vitality
All remaining points. Blade Fury is semi-ranged but Blade Shield and Sentinel pull enemies close — you need the buffer. Target 2,500+ HP in Hell.
Energy
None. Blade Fury has moderate mana cost — handle it with mana leech and mana on gear.

Gear

Weapons
Starter
Cleglaw's Set pieces for massive Attack Rating, Crushing Blow, and Deadly Strike. Shop Cunning Feral Claws at Anya for early +skills. Most attack modifiers (Crushing Blow, Open Wounds) proc via Blade Fury projectiles.
Standard
Bartuc's Cut-Throat for +skills and life leech. Or a Cunning Feral Claws of Piercing (shopped rare claw) with +skills and IAS for Blade Sentinel usage.
BiS
Ethereal Plague Scissors Suwayyah — massive weapon damage, +skills, and Poison Damage. Note: skip Blade Shield with this since it's Ethereal. Off-hand: Phoenix Monarch for +skills and -enemy fire resistance, or a second claw for Weapon Block.
Other Gear
Helm: Vampire Gaze for DR% and life leech, or Guillaume's Face for Crushing Blow and Deadly Strike (BiS for Uber variant).
Armor: Enigma for Teleport repositioning. Swap to Fortitude vs Ubers for capped resistances and damage.
Rings: Angelic Halo x2 for massive Attack Rating boost (crucial for Blade Fury hit chance) or Ravenfrost + rare leech ring.
Amulet: Angelic Wings (set piece for AR) or Highlord's Wrath for +skills, IAS, and Deadly Strike.
Belt: Verdungo's Hearty Cord for Vitality and DR.
Gloves: Laying of Hands for IAS and fire resist, or Dracul's Grasp vs Ubers for Life Tap proc.
Boots: Gore Rider for Crushing Blow + Open Wounds + Deadly Strike — all proc on Blade Fury hits.
⚠️ Attack Rating is Critical
Blade Fury has an AR check on every projectile. Pre-buff with Demon Limb (Enchant) from your weapon swap for a massive AR boost that lasts over 11 minutes. Use Angelic set pieces or high-AR rare rings/amulets to supplement. Missing constantly is a sign you need more AR — add Dex or Angelic gear.

Mercenary

Act 2 Nightmare Offensive (Might Aura) — Standard
Equip with The Reaper's Toll Thresher — its 33% chance to cast Decrepify on strike procs via Blade Fury hits, drastically reducing enemy physical resistance and slowing them. This is the endgame physical immune solution. Pair with Fortitude armor and a survivable helmet (Andariel's Visage or Vampire Gaze). The Reaper's Toll is strongly preferred over Infinity for this build.
Act 2 Nightmare Offensive (Might Aura) — Starter
Use Insight Partizan for Meditation (mana regen). The merc acts as a second damage dealer. Prioritize Resistances and Life on his gear early to keep him alive while you're learning the build.

Playstyle Tips

  • Pre-buff with Demon Limb on weapon swap before every run — Enchant gives massive Attack Rating that lasts 11+ minutes, dramatically improving Blade Fury hit chance.
  • Deploy Blade Sentinels first at a choke point, then fire Blade Fury while they patrol. 5 Sentinels = 5 hits/second passively on top of your own Blade Fury stream.
  • Cast 1-2 Death Sentries once the first enemy falls — the Corpse Explosion chain kills entire packs before you've finished firing Blade Fury.
  • NEVER activate Blade Shield on an Ethereal weapon or non-repairable runeword. You will destroy it. Only cast it on weapons that repair themselves (like Non-Ethereal Grief Phase Blade).
  • Use Atma's Scarab amulet to proc Amplify Damage via Blade Fury — this effectively breaks many Physical Immune monsters without Bone Break.
  • Dragon Flight is your mobility tool before Enigma — use it to jump to targets and reposition quickly.
  • Bone Break sunder charm is the hard counter to Physical Immunes if you have the budget for it.

Leveling Progression

Blade Fury unlocks at level 18, but trap leveling is faster early:

Levels 1-17 — Fire Blast + Wake of Fire traps. Safe and fast through Normal Act 1-2.
Levels 18-30 — Blade Sentinel at 18, Blade Fury at 18. Can respec into blades if you have a strong weapon, otherwise finish Normal on traps.
Levels 30-50 — Respec into Blade Fury once you have a decent weapon and AR sources. Max Blade Fury → Blade Shield (synergy) → Blade Sentinel → Death Sentry.
Levels 50+ — Target Plague Scissors Suwayyah (ethereal). Add Claw Mastery. Get Reaper's Toll for the merc. Bone Break sunder charm is endgame icing.
