Freezing Arrow Amazon Build Guide — Frost Maiden
By the DiabloBytes team · Updated March 2026
Overview
The Freezing Arrow Amazon — often called the Frost Maiden or Cold Bowazon — is a crowd-control powerhouse built around one of the most visually satisfying skills in the game. Freezing Arrow fires an arrow that detonates on impact into a massive ice explosion, dealing cold damage in a large radius and freezing every enemy caught in the blast. A well-placed Freezing Arrow can lock an entire monster pack in place while the explosion deals area damage.
The build's unique strength is its crowd control. Frozen enemies cannot attack or move, making it one of the safest builds to play in Hell difficulty. What separates this from a one-trick pony is its dual damage profile: Immolation Arrow and Exploding Arrow give you a legitimate fire backup for cold immune packs. Think of it like an elemental caster that swaps between cold and fire based on the situation.
Pierce is the force multiplier for this build. When a Freezing Arrow passes through enemies, each target it hits can trigger the ice explosion independently. With 100% pierce chance (achievable via Razortail + Pierce skill), you're generating massive chained AoE from a single arrow through a stacked pack.
The cons: heavy mana dependency (Freezing Arrow is expensive), relatively squishy without good positioning, and gear can be hard to obtain. It's rated B-tier because it's beginner-friendly and excellent in dense areas but struggles in open, low-density zones.

Skill Allocation
Max skills in this priority order: Pierce (to 69%) → Freezing Arrow → Cold Arrow → Immolation Arrow → Exploding Arrow → Fire Arrow. Put 1 point in Dodge, Avoid, Evade, Valkyrie, Decoy, and Strafe (for Mania prebuff). Penetrate is important for Attack Rating — max it in the standard variant.

Budget (Hell Starter)
Bow: Witchwild String (magic arrow proc, +bow skills, deadly strike) or Wizendraw (cold skills, cannot be frozen). Good starters before you can craft or trade for better options.
Weapon Swap: Insight Stag Bow — Meditation aura solves your mana problems. Swap to this if you run out of mana mid-run, or use it as your primary bow until you build an endgame option.
Helm: Harlequin Crest (Shako) — +2 skills, life, mana. Or Lore runeword for early budget.
Armor: Skin of the Vipermagi (resistances, +1 skills) or Treachery (IAS + Fade proc for resistances).
Belt: Razortail — 33% pierce. Not optional — this is mandatory for the build to function at full power. Get this early.
Ring 1: Raven Frost — Cannot Be Frozen, +cold damage, cold absorb. Mandatory for any bow Amazon.
Ring 2: Stone of Jordan or Nagelring (MF) or rare ring with +mana after kill.
Amulet: Rare Amazon amulet with +2 skills or Mara's Kaleidoscope for resistances.
Gloves: Rare Amazon gloves with +2 bow skills + IAS. Archer's Gloves of Alacrity (rare suffix) is the budget version.
Boots: Silkweave — +mana after kill. Excellent budget pick to reduce mana pot usage. War Traveler for MF runs.
Mercenary: Act 2 Nightmare Might aura merc + Insight polearm + resist helm. Free mana regen.
Mid-Tier
Bow: Ice runeword (Amn + Shael + Jah + Lo) in a Grand Matron Bow or Matriarchal Bow base — level 18 Holy Freeze aura chills every enemy on screen, slowing packs before you fire. Provides +25% cold damage, cold pierce, and Glacial Spike charges. Excellent all-around choice.
Bow (Alt): Harmony Stag Bow — Vigor aura grants +40% Faster Run/Walk to you and nearby allies. Great for mobility before Enigma.
Helm: Nightwing's Veil — +8-15% cold damage, +2 skills. Best helmet for cold damage builds.
Armor: Chains of Honor — +2 skills, 70 all resistances, 8% life leech. Strong defensive choice.
Amulet: Highlord's Wrath — +1 skills, IAS, deadly strike, lightning resistance. Excellent mid-tier pick.
Weapon Swap: Call to Arms — Battle Orders for a large life and mana buffer. Prebuff before entering zones.
Best-in-Slot (BiS)
Bow: Faith Matriarchal Bow — Level 12-15 Fanaticism aura provides massive IAS and Attack Rating. The IAS from Fanaticism is what lets you hit the fastest attack breakpoints. Pair with Mania weapon-swap prebuff to hit max frames.
Bow (Alt): Mist runeword in a Matriarchal Bow — +3 to all skills, 40% chance to pierce (stacks with Razortail for 100%+ pierce), Concentration aura. Strong alternative if Faith is out of reach.
Weapon Swap: Mania runeword — Swap and fire Strafe once to proc Burst of Speed, gaining massive IAS and Faster Run/Walk. Maintain this buff throughout your farming session.
Helm: Nightwing's Veil socketed with a cold facet (-5% enemy cold resist, +5% cold damage). Pain Visor Diadem is another elite base option.
Armor: Enigma — Teleport lets you reposition for perfect Freezing Arrow placement, move your merc and Valkyrie, and traverse maps instantly.
Belt: Razortail — Still mandatory even at BiS. Pierce is non-negotiable for this build.
Ring 1: Raven Frost — Mandatory. Cannot Be Frozen + cold absorb + dexterity.
Ring 2: Bul-Kathos' Wedding Band (+1 skills, life stolen) or Stone of Jordan (+1 skills, +max mana).
Amulet: Highlord's Wrath or caster-crafted amulet with +2 Amazon skills + IAS.
Gloves: Hit Power Crafted Gloves (life after kill, IAS) or rare Amazon gloves with +2 bow skills + IAS.
Boots: Aldur's Advance (life, +40 FR/W) or War Traveler (MF + stats).
Charms: Fletcher's Grand Charm of Vita (Bow & Crossbow skiller + life), Hellfire Torch, Annihilus, cold damage small charms. Use Cold Rupture Grand Charm instead of a skiller when farming Terror Zones with cold immunes — it sunders cold immunity, dropping resistant monsters to 95% cold resistance.
Mercenary
Act 2 Nightmare — Might Aura mercenary. This is the standard choice. The Might aura amplifies your physical damage on Guided Arrow and cold immune targets. More importantly, equip him with Infinity Giant Thresher — the Conviction aura reduces enemy resistances and can even break some cold immunities, dramatically changing your damage profile against resistant targets.
Weapon: Infinity Giant Thresher (endgame) or Insight Thresher/War Pike (budget). Infinity's Conviction aura reduces enemy resistances — pairs with Cold Rupture charm to make cold immunes killable.
Armor: Fortitude — 300% enhanced damage, life per kill, resistances. Best merc armor in the game for damage.
Helm: Andariel's Visage — life steal, IAS, +skills, deadly strike. Keeps the merc alive and dealing damage.
Budget merc: Insight polearm (Meditation aura) is highly recommended while leveling — the free mana regeneration completely eliminates mana pot usage and lets you spam Freezing Arrow nonstop.
Dealing with Cold Immunes
- Immolation Arrow + Exploding Arrow. Your primary immune solution. These fire-damage skills pierce targets and deal AoE fire damage. If you've invested points properly, this handles most immune packs without skipping them.
- Cold Rupture Grand Charm. Sunders cold immunity — reduces cold immune monsters to 95% cold resistance. This is the S-tier solution for Terror Zone farming. Swap one skiller for Cold Rupture when entering immune-heavy zones.
- Infinity on the mercenary. Conviction aura reduces enemy resistances and can break some (not all) cold immunities. Pairs with Cold Rupture to maximize cold damage against formerly immune targets.
- Lower Resist charges. A wand with Lower Resist charges can reduce cold resistance in the early game before you have Cold Rupture. Situational but worth keeping in inventory.
- Skip them. Still viable in dense areas — teleport past immune packs and focus on non-immunes. Fast and efficient for most farming routes.
- Farm immune-free zones. Ancient Tunnels (Act 2 Lost City), The Pit (Act 1), and Andariel have minimal cold immune density — perfect for this build.
Playstyle & Prebuff Rotation
- Prebuff routine (start of every farming session): Equip Call to Arms → cast Battle Command → cast Battle Orders for a life/mana buffer. Then equip Mania → fire Strafe to proc Burst of Speed (massive IAS + FRW buff). Swap back to your main bow. This buff lasts ~2 minutes — reapply during runs.
- Enchant from Demon Limb. Swap to Demon Limb, cast Enchant on yourself — increases Attack Rating (AR) by a large amount and adds fire damage. This AR buff lasts over 11 minutes and is critical for maximizing pierce chance against bosses and elite packs.
- Stack enemies for pierce. Kite monsters into a line or dense cluster, then fire Freezing Arrow through the whole group. With 100% pierce, every enemy hit triggers its own ice explosion — this chains across the entire group for massive AoE damage.
- Freezing Arrow doesn't need AR to freeze. The explosion itself doesn't require Attack Rating to apply the freeze. Only the physical arrow contact (for pierce through a target) uses AR — so Penetrate and Enchant matter for maintaining pierce, not for the cold damage itself.
- Use Valkyrie and Decoy as tanks. Drop Decoy to redirect packs, summon Valkyrie at the start of each zone. These allies let you maintain distance and stay out of melee range while kiting.
- Mana management is critical. Freezing Arrow is extremely mana-hungry. Prioritize +mana after kill on gear (Silkweave, rings, charms). Use Insight merc until you can afford Infinity. Keep full mana potions on your belt.
- Teleport positioning. With Enigma, teleport to ideal shooting angles — you want enemies clustered in a straight line for maximum pierce chains. Repositioning mid-fight to line up shots is the skill expression for this build.
Leveling Progression

- Ancient Tunnels (Act 2, Lost City). No cold immunes, dense packs, excellent drop pool including Lo runes. S-tier for this build.
- The Pit (Act 1, Tamoe Highland). Dense monster packs, no cold immunes, good item level. Perfect for MF runs.
- Andariel runs. No cold immunity, drops high runes and Shako. Add Rakanishu's Blade for fire immunity coverage if needed.
- Terror Zones. With Cold Rupture charm, you can farm any Terror Zone effectively. Swap Cold Rupture in when the TZ has cold immune density.
- Avoid (without Cold Rupture): Act 3 Hell (heavy cold immune density), Chaos Sanctuary, Worldstone Keep. These areas are frustrating without immune coverage.
