Barbarian B-Tier

Frenzy Barbarian Build Guide — Dual Grief Dual Wield

By the DiabloBytes team · Updated March 2026

Overview

The Frenzy Barbarian is the fastest melee Barbarian in D2R. Frenzy is a dual-wield attack that stacks movement and attack speed with each successful hit, building into a blur of steel and fury. At full stacks you're practically teleporting around the map while shredding targets at blinding speed. Common farming spots include the Chaos Sanctuary, The Pit, and Travincal — anywhere with moderate to high monster density and good item drops.

The BiS weapon setup is dual Grief Phase Blades, providing up to +800 flat damage that applies regardless of enemy defense. Blade Mastery further amplifies this with enhanced damage, attack rating, and critical hit chance. Physical immunes are handled by Berserk, which converts your damage to Magic — and The Reaper's Toll on your mercenary procs Decrepify to break physical immunities outright.

The build is very gear dependent — budget versions work fine for normal farming but endgame gear is a significant investment. It can feel clunky against large packs or physical immunes without the right setup, and gameplay can become repetitive. That said, it's a genuinely capable Uber killer and one of the most mobile builds in the game. Solid B tier with a high execution ceiling.

Skill Allocation

Max these skills in order. The Weapon Mastery should match your weapon type — Blade Mastery for Phase Blades (swords), Axe Mastery if running Berserker Axes.

Max (20 Points Each)
Frenzy — 20 points. Core attack. Each successful hit grants a Frenzy Stack, increasing attack and movement speed. Max this first. Deals Physical Damage with minor Magic Damage from the Berserk synergy.
Double Swing — 20 points. Synergy to Frenzy. Dual-wield attack that hits two targets or the same target twice. Max second for the damage boost and as a fast single-target follow-up.
Blade Mastery — 20 points. Passive synergy that increases damage, attack rating, and critical hit chance with swords. Switch to Axe Mastery or Mace Mastery if using different weapon types. Max third.
Battle Orders — 20 points. Percentage-based Life, Mana, and Stamina buff for you and your party. One of the best buffs in the game. Max fourth — it keeps you alive in melee range.
Berserk — 20 points. Converts Physical Damage to Magic Damage. Required against Physical Immunes and useful for speeding up runs. Reduces your Defense while active. Max last.
1 Point Investments
Battle Command — 1 point. Gives you and your party +1 to All Skills. Always pre-buff with this before a run.
Shout — 1 point. Increases Defense of all party members. Pre-buff alongside Battle Orders and Battle Command.
Battle Cry — 1 point. AoE skill that reduces enemy Defense and Damage. Use on packs to make fights easier for you and your mercenary.
Find Item — 1 point. Chance to find additional drops from slain monsters. Useful for MF runs when corpses aren't consumed.
Grim Ward — 1 point. Creates a totem from a corpse that debuffs and fears nearby enemies, boosting physical damage output. Pop these in tight corridors after first kills.
Leap — 1 point. Jump over obstacles and apply radial knockback. Great for keeping enemies stunned and escaping when surrounded.
Leap Attack — 1 point. Jump to cursor location and swing on landing. Good mobility tool before you have Enigma/Teleport.
Increased Speed — 1 point. Passive run/walk speed increase. Small QoL improvement with no downside.
Natural Resistance — 1 point. Passive all-resist boost. One point is sufficient — dump remaining leftover points here only after all maxed skills are done.

Stat Points

Strength — Enough to equip your gear. Phase Blade requires 25 Str — very low — but body armor and other pieces may push this to 100–140 depending on your setup.
Dexterity — Enough to equip your gear. Unlike many builds, you do NOT need to hit max block — you're dual wielding so no shield. Dex also improves Attack Rating which helps Frenzy land hits.
Vitality — All remaining points. You're in melee with no block — survivability is everything. Battle Orders already multiplies your life pool significantly, so these points go far.
Energy — None. Mana leech from weapons plus Battle Orders handles mana comfortably at all stages.

Gear

Physical Damage, Attack Rating, and IAS are the top priority stats. Dual Grief Phase Blades is the standard BiS — each one adds up to +400 flat damage. Pre-buff every run with Call to Arms on weapon swap for the bonus Battle Orders charges.

Weapons (Main & Off-Hand)

Best: Dual Grief Phase Blade — Up to +800 flat damage combined. Phase Blades are indestructible, never need repair, and have an extremely fast base speed. The gold standard.
Alt: Grief Phase Blade + Last Wish Phase Blade — Last Wish provides Might aura + MF, excellent for magic finding.
Alt: Grief + Beast Berserker Axe — Beast grants Fanaticism aura for party-wide IAS/AR/damage. Requires Axe Mastery instead of Blade Mastery.
Budget: Dual Oath Balrog Blade — Shael Pul Mal Lum runeword. Strong damage at relatively low rune cost with Ignore Target's Defense.

Weapon Swap

Best: Call to Arms + Spirit Shield (or any off-hand) — Pre-buff Battle Orders and Battle Command before every run. Essential — do not skip this swap.
Alt: Heart of the Oak Flail + Lidless Wall for more skill levels and FCR.

Helmet

Best: Arreat's Face — +2 Barbarian Skills, 20% IAS, life, resists, and leech. Ideal for most setups.
Uber Alt: Crown of Ages — Damage Reduction and Cannot Be Frozen for Uber content.
Budget: Guillaume's Face — Crushing Blow and Deadly Strike are excellent for bosses.

Body Armor

Best: Enigma — Teleport access transforms your mobility and repositioning ability, keeping you and your merc safe.
Alt: Fortitude — Massive Enhanced Damage and Damage Reduction. Better raw damage than Enigma, sacrifices Teleport.
Budget: Lionheart or Duriel's Shell for resists and life.

Gloves

Best: Laying of Hands — +350% Damage to Demons. Essential for Uber runs.
Alt: Dracul's Grasp — Life Tap proc for massive life recovery in tough fights.
Budget: Chance Guards for Magic Find.

Belt

Best: Verdungo's Hearty Cord — Vitality, Damage Reduction, and life — excellent survivability.
Uber Alt: Thundergod's Vigor — Lightning Absorb for Uber Diablo.
Budget: String of Ears for Damage Reduction and Life Leech.

Boots

Best: Gore Rider — Crushing Blow, Deadly Strike, and Open Wounds for boss melting.
MF Alt: War Traveler for Magic Find and Vitality.

Amulet

Best: Highlord's Wrath — +1 Skills, IAS, and Deadly Strike. Perfect synergy with the build.
Alt: Mara's Kaleidoscope for +2 All Skills and all resists.

Rings

Best: Raven Frost + Bul-Kathos' Wedding Band — Cannot Be Frozen from Raven Frost is mandatory. Bul-Kathos adds life and life leech.
MF Alt: One Nagelring for additional Magic Find.

Charms

Unique: Hellfire Torch (Barbarian) + Annihilus — Both mandatory for endgame stats.
Sunder Charm: Bone Break — Sunders Physical Immune monsters to 95% resistance so Frenzy can hit them. Required for full-content farming.
Grand Charms: Sharp Grand Charms of Maiming (+max damage, +AR) or Combat Barbarian GCs for +skills.
Small Charms: Life, Resist, or Fine Small Charms of Good Luck for MF.

Mercenary

The Act 2 Nightmare Offensive (Might Aura) mercenary is the standard choice. Might provides a significant flat Physical Damage multiplier to both you and your merc's attacks. The Reaper's Toll is the core merc weapon — its Decrepify proc slows enemies and breaks Physical Immunities, which is critical since Frenzy is a Physical Damage build.

Mercenary Type — Act 2 Nightmare Offensive (Might Aura). The Might aura is a direct multiplier to all Physical Damage dealt by you and the mercenary.
Merc Weapon — The Reaper's Toll (ethereal). Has a chance to cast Decrepify on striking: slows enemies, increases Physical Damage dealt to them, and breaks Physical Immunities. This is the key to making Frenzy viable against PI packs.
Merc Armor — Fortitude (Sacred Armor, ethereal). Enormous Enhanced Damage and Damage Reduction for survivability. Budget: Treachery for Fade proc and IAS.
Merc Helmet — Andariel's Visage (ethereal). Life leech, IAS, and high defense. Budget: Tal Rasha's Horadric Crest for life leech and resistances.

Playstyle Tips

  • Pre-buff before every run: swap to CTA and cast Battle Command twice, then Battle Orders, then Shout. Keep these active throughout. They are essential to your survivability.
  • Frenzy stacks build with each successful hit — attack weaker monsters first to stack up speed, then tear into the juicy targets. At full stacks you move faster than Teleport in a straight line.
  • Use Double Swing for big single-target DPS on tanky enemies after you have Frenzy stacks running. It's a faster follow-up attack that hits the same target twice.
  • Battle Cry reduces enemy Defense and Damage — pop it on packs to make fights easier for both you and your mercenary before diving in.
  • Pop Grim Wards in tight corridors after the first monsters die for extra physical damage debuffs. Be aware they cause enemies to flee — use in hallways not open areas.
  • Against Physical Immunes without Bone Break or Decrepify: swap to Berserk, which deals Magic Damage and bypasses physical immunity entirely.
  • Use Teleport (Enigma) to reposition both yourself and your mercenary. Your merc takes first-hit damage when you teleport into his position — he's your tank.
  • Against large packs, attack from the outer edge to avoid getting surrounded. Use Leap to escape when overwhelmed.

Leveling Progression

Frenzy unlocks at level 24. Before that, Double Swing carries you as the primary dual-wield skill. Rush toward level 24 to unlock your core skill as fast as possible.

Levels 1–17 — Double Swing is your primary dual-wield attack. Pick up Howl and Leap as you go. Use any two fast weapons. Prioritize attack speed over damage at this stage.
Levels 18–24 — Get prerequisites done. Grab Battle Cry, Shout, Leap Attack. Steel runeword in two fast swords is an excellent budget weapon at this stage. Unlock Frenzy at 24.
Levels 25–50 — Max Frenzy, then Double Swing (synergy), then Blade Mastery. Battle Orders for survivability. Put 1 point each into Battle Command, Shout, Grim Ward, Find Item. Farm with dual Oath when you can craft them.
Levels 50+ — Finish maxing Battle Orders and Berserk. Target Grief Phase Blade as your first major upgrade — it's a transformative item. Run dual Oath or Grief + Oath until you can afford a second Grief.
