Werebear Druid Build Guide

Overview

The Werebear Druid transforms into a massive bear, gaining enormous life and defense at the cost of speed. Maul is the signature skill: each hit builds a Maul stack that increases your attack speed and physical damage, meaning you start slow and end fast — unlike most melee builds that feel the same hit-to-hit. Shockwave is the build's hidden gem: a single point gives a cone AoE stun that can lock down entire screens, allowing you to wade into packs and swing without taking return fire.

This build is legitimately good for Hardcore characters — the life pool with Lycanthropy + Oak Sage + Battle Orders is almost incomprehensibly large, and the Shockwave stun makes most encounters trivially safe. For Softcore farming, it's slower than Fury Druid but the tankiness enables certain otherwise-risky farming spots that other melee builds avoid. With Grief + Beast, the damage output becomes respectable and the bear becomes a genuine threat.

Skill Allocation

20 pts — Maul (primary attack — stacks attack speed/damage, max for peak performance)

20 pts — Werebear (life + defense multiplier, enables Maul and Shockwave)

20 pts — Lycanthropy (life, shapeshifting duration — multiplies total life significantly)

20 pts — Heart of Wolverine (boosts melee damage and attack rating)

1–5 pts — Shockwave (AoE cone stun — even a few points dramatically extends stun duration)

Shockwave at 1 point is usable; at 5 points the stun duration extends noticeably. Remaining points after the core 80 go into Oak Sage (life aura for team/you) and optionally into Shockwave for better stun coverage. Summon Grizzly at 1 pt provides a tanking body.

IAS Breakpoints (Werebear)

IAS on armor/gloves does NOT apply in Werebear form — only weapon IAS counts. Beast runeword provides Fanaticism aura (+IAS) which DOES work.

Maul stacks further accelerate your attack speed after hitting, providing natural IAS momentum.

Beast in a Berserker Axe or Phase Blade provides the best IAS boost for the bear form.

Stat Points

Strength: Enough for gear (typically 156 for Enigma/Fortitude)

Dexterity: Enough for max block if using a shield; otherwise base

Vitality: Everything else — Werebear multiplies base life; every point here counts double

Energy: Base

Gear

Budget

Weapon: Ribcracker (upgraded — massive damage, Crushing Blow, Knockback)

Armor: Treachery (Fade proc for resistances, IAS in bear from proc)

Helm: Jalal's Mane (+2 Druid, shapeshifting bonus)

Gloves: Dracul's Grasp (Life Tap proc — critical for sustain vs hard bosses)

Mid

Weapon: Grief Phase Blade (highest flat physical damage in the game)

Armor: Fortitude (enhanced damage + resist)

Rings: Raven Frost (Cannot Be Frozen) + Bul-Kathos' Wedding Band (life leech)

Best in Slot

Weapon: Beast Berserker Axe (Fanaticism aura — IAS works in bear form)

Off-weapon: Grief Phase Blade or +6 Maul Werebear paws

Armor: Fortitude Archon Plate

Helm: Guillaume's Face (Crushing Blow 35%, Deadly Strike 15%)

Charms: Werebear shape-shifting GCs + life SCs

Mercenary

Type: Act 2 Nightmare Offensive (Might aura)

Weapon: Reaper's Toll (Decrepify proc — -50% physical res on enemies + slow)

Armor: Fortitude

Helm: Andariel's Visage

Decrepify from Reaper's Toll is transformative — it cuts enemy physical resistance by 50% and slows them. For a build that relies on sustained melee, slowed enemies are much easier to handle. The Might aura multiplies your already-high physical damage output further.

Playstyle Tips

  • Shockwave before engaging — the cone stun locks down entire screens. Cast it into a pack, then Maul freely.
  • Maul stacks build naturally with each hit — you start slow and end fast. Let the stacks build for max efficiency.
  • Werebear's life pool with Lycanthropy + Battle Orders from CTA can reach 10,000–15,000+ life in Hell. You're unkillable if you maintain stacks.
  • Heart of Wolverine boosts attack rating significantly — without it, you'll miss too often in Hell.
  • Guillaume's Face + Dracul's Grasp gives massive Crushing Blow + Life Tap — bosses die regardless of your DPS.
  • Best for Hardcore players: transform, Shockwave, then swing. The stun window means nothing can hit you back.
  • Good farming spots: Chaos Sanctuary (tank everything), Throne of Destruction, Underground Passage.

Leveling Progression

Werebear is available at level 1 — this is one of the smoothest leveling experiences:

Levels 1–17 — Werebear from level 1, Maul from level 1. Simple and effective through all of Normal.
Levels 18–30 — Add Shockwave for stun utility. Put points into Lycanthropy for extended form duration and life.
Levels 30–60 — Max Maul → Werebear → Lycanthropy. Heart of Wolverine improves attack rating for Nightmare. Ribcracker is excellent budget weapon.
Levels 60+ — Max Heart of Wolverine → Oak Sage. Target Grief for damage, Fortitude for damage/survivability, Guillaume's Face for Crushing Blow. Beast makes this build truly shine in Hell.

Highlight Werebear Druid Drops

Highlight Ribcracker, Jalal's Mane, Guillaume's Face, Druid pelts with +Shapeshifting, and Berserker Axe/Phase Blade bases for Beast/Grief.
