Greater Rift Guide
By the DiabloBytes team · Updated April 2026
Greater Rifts are the endgame of Diablo III. They are timed, progressively scaling dungeons that serve as the primary way to level Legendary Gems, earn Blood Shards, gain Paragon experience, and compete on Seasonal Leaderboards. Unlike Nephalem Rifts, Greater Rifts drop no loot from trash mobs — all rewards come from the Rift Guardian at the end and from upgrading your gems after the clear. Understanding how GRs work, how to farm them efficiently, and how to push higher tiers is the core of D3's endgame progression loop.
What Are Greater Rifts?
Greater Rifts are randomized timed dungeons accessed through the Nephalem Obelisk in town. You select a GR tier, spend a Greater Rift Keystone, and have 15 minutes to kill enough monsters to fill the progress bar to 100%, then defeat the Rift Guardian boss that spawns. The GR level determines monster health and damage, scaling all the way up to the cap of GR 150.
Inside a Greater Rift, no loot drops from regular monsters. Elites drop purple progress orbs that fill the bar faster, making them the top priority to target. Up to four Pylons can spawn in a single GR (each type only once): Power (10x damage), Conduit (chain lightning), Channeling (unlimited resource + CDR), and Shield (invulnerability). You cannot change gear or skills once inside a Greater Rift.
After defeating the Rift Guardian, Urshi appears and offers Legendary Gem upgrade attempts. You receive 3 base attempts, plus 1 bonus attempt if you completed the rift without dying, plus 1 bonus attempt if you empowered the rift with gold before starting — for a maximum of 5 upgrade attempts per run.
How Greater Rift Keystones Work
Greater Rift Keystones are the currency required to open a GR. They drop from Rift Guardians at the end of regular Nephalem Rifts. The number of keystones you receive scales with difficulty:
- Torment I — 1 keystone guaranteed
- Torment XI — 2 keystones guaranteed
- Torment XVI — 3 or 4 keystones (equal probability)
The most efficient key farming strategy is to run Nephalem Rifts on the highest Torment difficulty you can clear in under 3-4 minutes. Wearing the Cain's Destiny set bonus increases your average keystone drops by 25%. Keystones are universal — the same keystone opens any GR tier you have unlocked.
GR Difficulty Scaling
Each Greater Rift tier has a direct difficulty equivalent to a Torment level. Monster health increases by approximately 17% per GR level (a multiplicative x1.17 scaling factor). This means health roughly doubles every 4.5 GR levels and increases by about 10x every 15 levels. Monster damage scales at roughly 13% per level up to GR25, then 7% per level up to GR70, and about 2.3% per level from GR71 to 150.
| Torment | GR Level | Torment | GR Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| TI | GR 10 | TII | GR 13 |
| TIII | GR 16 | TIV | GR 19 |
| TV | GR 22 | TVI | GR 25 |
| TVII | GR 30 | TVIII | GR 35 |
| TIX | GR 40 | TX | GR 45 |
| TXI | GR 50 | TXII | GR 55 |
| TXIII | GR 60 | TXIV | GR 65 |
| TXV | GR 70 | TXVI | GR 75 |
GR 76 and above exceeds Torment XVI difficulty. The scaling continues at the same rate — there is no difficulty ceiling in terms of monster power, only the GR 150 cap on rift level.
Legendary Gem Leveling
Legendary Gems are special gems that drop exclusively from Greater Rift Guardians and can only be leveled by completing Greater Rifts. Each gem starts at rank 0 and gains power with every rank. At rank 25, every gem unlocks a powerful secondary effect. The maximum rank for most gems is 150, though a few cap earlier (Legacy of Dreams at 99, Iceblink at 50, Esoteric Alteration at 100).
Your upgrade success chance depends on the difference between the GR level you cleared and the gem's current rank. Clear a GR 10 or more levels above the gem's rank and every attempt is a guaranteed success. The further below the GR level is relative to the gem rank, the lower the chance:
| GR Level vs Gem Rank | Upgrade Chance |
|---|---|
| +10 or higher | 100% |
| +9 | 90% |
| +8 | 80% |
| +7 | 70% |
| +6 to +0 | 60% |
| -1 | 30% |
| -2 | 15% |
| -3 | 8% |
| -4 | 4% |
| -5 | 2% |
| -6 to -15 | 1% |
| -16 or lower | 0% |
Practical example: To guarantee all 5 upgrades on a rank 100 gem, you need to clear GR 110 (100 + 10 = 100% chance). To level a gem from rank 0 to rank 25 with guaranteed upgrades every time, you only need to clear GR 35 (since even a GR 10 gives 100% to a rank 0 gem, and GR 35 gives 100% to a rank 25 gem).
Speed GRs vs. Pushing
The D3 endgame revolves around two distinct playstyles, and most of your time is spent alternating between them.
Speed GRs
- Target: 2-3 minute clear times
- Purpose: Gem leveling, Paragon XP, Blood Shards
- Run ~20 GR levels below your push tier
- Use speed-oriented skills and gear
- Empower every run for 5 gem upgrades
- Never stop moving — skip stragglers
Pushing
- Target: 12-15 minute clears (use the full timer)
- Purpose: Leaderboard rank, personal best
- Run at your absolute max GR tier
- Use maximum damage and toughness setup
- Fish for favorable maps and mob types
- Save Pylons strategically for the RG
The gear loop: Speed GRs level your gems and earn Paragon. Higher gems and Paragon let you push higher. Higher pushes unlock higher tiers for speed farming. Repeat. Most endgame sessions are roughly 80% speed farming and 20% pushing.
Caldesann's Despair — Augmenting
Caldesann's Despair is a Kanai's Cube recipe that permanently adds main stat to an Ancient or Primal Legendary item. It is the single biggest power increase available in the late endgame and the reason gem leveling matters beyond just the three gems you socket in jewelry.
Recipe Materials
- 1. An Ancient or Primal Legendary item
- 2. A leveled Legendary Gem (consumed in the process)
- 3. 3 Flawless Royal gems of the same type
| Item Slot | Min Gem Rank |
|---|---|
| Weapon | 30 |
| Jewelry (Ring / Amulet) | 40 |
| Armor | 50 |
| Flawless Royal Gem | Stat Added |
|---|---|
| Ruby | Strength |
| Topaz | Intelligence |
| Emerald | Dexterity |
| Amethyst | Vitality |
The stat bonus equals gem rank x 5. A rank 100 Legendary Gem adds 500 main stat. A rank 150 gem adds 750. With 13 gear slots augmented at rank 120 each, that is 7,800 additional main stat — a massive damage and toughness increase.
An item can only hold one augment at a time. Applying a new augment replaces the old one. The Legendary Gem used is destroyed. Only re-augment when your new gem rank is at least 20 levels higher than the existing augment to justify the time investment.
Best Legendary Gems
There are 23 Legendary Gems in Diablo III. While the best three for your specific build depends on class and playstyle, these six are the most universally powerful and appear across the widest range of top-tier builds:
GR Fishing — Pushing for Personal Bests
"Fishing" is the practice of opening Greater Rifts and immediately leaving if the randomized map layout or monster composition is unfavorable. At the highest levels of play, the difference between a good and bad rift can be several GR tiers worth of difficulty. Fishing is not cheating — it is an accepted and necessary part of competitive pushing.
What to look for: Open, wide tile sets like Battlefields, Festering Woods, and Silver Spire offer superior monster density and room to maneuver. Avoid narrow maps like Caves, Keep Depths, and Sewers — tight corridors limit AoE damage and mob grouping. The monster type matters equally: large, slow-moving melee enemies that cluster together are ideal for progress; small, fast-moving, or ranged enemies that scatter are a time sink.
Pylon strategy: When pushing, save Pylons for maximum value. A Conduit Pylon near the Rift Guardian can deal massive boss damage. A Power Pylon during a dense pack gives enormous progress. Do not click Pylons immediately — scout ahead, assess the situation, and pop them when they provide the biggest swing.
When to leave: If the first floor is a narrow cave with scattered ranged mobs, leave immediately. Even if you have invested 10 minutes, abandon a run that you know cannot be completed in time — that time is better spent on a fresh attempt with better RNG. Top leaderboard players may open and close 20 or more rifts for every one they finish.
