⚗ Bringing WW Barb Back

Whirlwind Barb fell off the meta years ago because Grief Frenzy out-DPS'd it on single targets while Hammerdin/Sorc out-cleared it on packs. The community stopped updating WW guides. The Tempest revives WW by exploiting a proc-math interaction that only works for multi-hit skills — Lawbringer's 20% Decrepify CTC fires on every enemy in WW radius independently, creating mass permanent curse. Frenzy can't do this because it's single-target.

Same rune cost as The Judge (~27 Pul). Same weapon pair. Different skill tree. Shared gear drops between the two builds if you want to farm with both.

Why WW Dropped From Meta

  • Frenzy's speed-stacking outpaces WW single-target DPS.
  • Iron Maiden from Chaos Sanctuary Oblivion Knights reflects WW damage — you can't interrupt to potion-heal.
  • No active leech during WW (Life Tap + Crushing Blow still function but active leech pauses).
  • Hammerdin and Sorc dominate pack-clear with Teleport — WW's niche got taken.
  • Dual Grief costs the same as Frenzy but delivers less.

The Fix: WW's Multi-Hit Proc Math

WW mechanics the community forgot: it hits every enemy in radius per hit-frame, and each hit rolls CTC independently. At max IAS, dual-wield WW triggers hit-frames every 4-5 frames ≈ 6 hits/sec per target. With 5 enemies in radius:

Hit events/sec = 6 hits/target × 5 targets = 30 events/sec
Lawbringer Decrepify CTC = 20% per event
P(no Decrepify in 30 events) = 0.8030 ≈ 0.001 (0.1%)
P(≥1 Decrepify per second) = 99.9%

Every enemy in WW radius gets Decrepify within ~1 second. Decrepify lasts ~10 seconds at aura level 18. The entire pack is permanently cursed.

Decrepify cursed enemies: take +100% physical damage, deal -50% damage, have -50% defense and -50% movement/attack speed. WW shreds them at 2x damage while they can't hit you back.

Why the Community Missed It

  • WW Barb guides went stale After Grief was optimized as the WW weapon, nobody revisited alternate offhands. Lawbringer was never evaluated.
  • Lawbringer is classified as "PvP weapon" Slain Monsters Rest in Peace is a PvP darling. Community pigeonholes the runeword and misses its PvE mass-proc potential on WW.
  • CTC proc math across multi-hit skills isn't in guides 30 events/sec × 20% = 99.9% uptime is a calculation nobody publishes because it's counterintuitive — you'd assume 20% means 20%, not near-certainty.
  • Decrepify mass-application on a Barb is unprecedented You normally need a Necromancer to mass-curse. A Barb delivering auto-curse across packs is a genuinely new role.

Weapons and gear are identical to The Judge. The only difference between the two builds is skill point distribution. Farm both simultaneously — one character set, two skill respecs (Akara quest + Token of Absolution), two distinct playstyles for different content.

Iron Maiden Solution (Historically WW's Killer)

Oblivion Knights casting Iron Maiden on your WW has killed Barbs in Chaos Sanctuary for 25 years. The Tempest solves it with three stacking layers:

  • Dracul's Grasp Life Tap CTC 5-10% per strike. WW procs this constantly; Life Tap reverses IM damage into healing. Your WW feeds your own HP pool when OKs curse you.
  • Lawbringer's Slain Rest in Peace + Decrepify priority Cursed OKs take 2x damage. They die before completing more IM casts. Corpses can't revive. Chaos Sanctuary becomes a one-pass clear.
  • Decrepify's -50% enemy damage dealt Even if IM does reflect, the OK deals half damage — further halved by your own DR stack (Verdungo 15 + Vampire Gaze 15 = 30 DR).
