Colossal Ancients: The Uber Ancients Guide

By the DiabloBytes team · Updated May 2026 · Covers D2R Season 13 — Hell difficulty only

Patch 3.2 Season 14 Tuning Changes Live May 22, 2026
  • Magic Resist: 50 → 75 — significant difficulty bump on all three Ancients.
  • Statue drops: Colossal Ancient Statues now drop from non-Terrorized act bosses (previously Terrorized-only).
  • Player-count decoupling: Drop rates no longer scale with player count.

Implication: Solo statue farming becomes more reliable. Magic-only sorc and Warlock builds need a lightning, cold, or physical fallback to handle the Magic Resist bump. Read the full Patch 3.2 notes →

The Colossal Ancients — also called Uber Ancients — are a pinnacle boss encounter introduced in D2R's Reign of the Warlock expansion. They are vastly empowered versions of Talic, Korlic, and Madawc from the Act 5 Arreat Summit trial, fought in a new arena called the Colossal Summit. This is the Reign of the Warlock equivalent of Uber Tristram: the hardest boss content in the game, designed to push fully geared endgame characters to their limits.

Unlike the original Ancients, each Colossal Ancient is immune to a specific element, runs a Conviction aura that shreds your resistances by 100%, summons Protector Spirit minions, and gains progressively more dangerous abilities as the fight escalates. The reward: one of six unique Colossal Jewels — upgraded Rainbow Facets with elemental damage, enemy resistance reduction, skill damage, experience, magic find, and gold bonuses on a single jewel.

How to Unlock: The Five Statues

To access the Colossal Summit, you must collect five Colossal Ancient Statues that drop from the final boss of each act — but only when that act is Terrorized. Terror Zones rotate automatically, or you can force them using consumable Worldstone Shards, which terrorize all zones in a specific act.

Talic's Anguish

Terrorized Andariel — Act 1
Western Worldstone Shard

Korlic's Pain

Terrorized Duriel — Act 2
Eastern Worldstone Shard

Madawc's Ire

Terrorized Mephisto — Act 3
Southern Worldstone Shard

Bul-Kathos' Nightmare

Terrorized Diablo — Act 4
Deep Worldstone Shard

Worusk's End

Terrorized Baal — Act 5
Northern Worldstone Shard

Statue drop rates are not guaranteed. You may need multiple kills per boss to get each statue. Use Worldstone Shards to force-terrorize the act you need rather than waiting for natural rotation. Farm efficiently by targeting one act boss at a time.

Opening the Portal

Once you have all five statues, place them in the Horadric Cube and transmute them while in Act 5 on Hell difficulty. A red portal opens to the Colossal Summit where the three Uber Ancients await.

Warning: Statues are consumed on transmutation. If you fail the encounter, you must farm all five statues again from scratch. Make sure your build and gear are ready before opening the portal.

The Fight: Mechanics & Abilities

All three Colossal Ancients are active simultaneously. Each is immune to one element, deals damage of that element, and runs a Conviction aura that reduces your resistance to their element by 100%. They also cast Enchant at the start of the fight, buffing their own damage further. Each Ancient summons up to 5 Protector Spirit minions (Extra Fast, element-immune) — a potential 15 minions total if all three Ancients are alive.

The fight escalates through enrage phases. Each Ancient gains new abilities at 50% HP and again at roughly 25% HP. When an Ancient dies, the remaining Ancients also gain enhanced abilities — and when the second Ancient dies, the final survivor unlocks its most devastating mechanics.

Talic the Defender

Fire Fire Immune

Aura: Conviction (-100% Fire Resistance)

Base: Whirlwind — charges into melee range with continuous spinning attacks. Summons up to 5 fire-immune Protector Spirit minions that also use Whirlwind.

Enrage (50% HP / 1st death): Whirlwind leaves behind a trail of fiery Dust Devils that deal significant Fire damage in a wide area. Avoid the trailing fire zones.

Final Phase (25% HP / 2nd death): Summons a Colossal Volcano at the origin point of his Whirlwind — deals massive Fire and Physical damage in a large AoE. The most visually obvious but also one of the most lethal abilities.

Jewels if killed last: Defender's Fire or Defender's Bile

Korlic the Protector

Cold Cold Immune

Aura: Conviction (-100% Cold Resistance)

Base: Leap Attack, Bash, and Frenzy — aggressive melee combatant who closes distance rapidly. Summons up to 5 cold-immune Protector Spirit minions using Bash and Frenzy.

Enrage (50% HP / 1st death): Casts Cold Fissure at the end of each Leap Attack — creates dangerous cold damage zones on the ground. Stand clear of landing spots.

Final Phase (25% HP / 2nd death): Casts Blizzard with every Leap Attack, stacking with Cold Fissure. Widely considered the most dangerous final-phase mechanic — overlapping cold zones deal devastating damage.

Jewels if killed last: Protector's Frost or Protector's Stone

Madawc the Guardian

Lightning Lightning Immune

Aura: Conviction (-100% Lightning Resistance)

Base: Double Throw — ranged attacks from a distance. Summons up to 5 lightning-immune Protector Spirit minions that also use Double Throw.

Enrage (50% HP / 1st death): Ranged attacks now cause Charged Bolts to emanate from the target on impact. Melee characters standing near the impact zone take extra lightning damage.

Final Phase (25% HP / 2nd death): Evokes Colossal Thunderstorm — a much more powerful version of the standard Thunderstorm that deals hefty lightning damage in a persistent AoE around him.

Jewels if killed last: Guardian's Thunder or Guardian's Light

Kill Order & Jewel Rewards

The Colossal Jewel you receive is determined by which Ancient you kill last. Each Ancient drops one of two possible jewels at random — you cannot choose which of the two you get. Plan your kill order around the jewel you want, but also consider which final-phase mechanics your build handles best.

Recommended Kill Order Strategy

  • Kill Korlic first — His final-phase Blizzard + Cold Fissure combo is widely considered the most dangerous enrage mechanic. Removing him early prevents the deadliest scenario.
  • Kill the Ancient whose jewel you do NOT want second. This leaves your target Ancient as the last kill.
  • Kill your target Ancient last — The jewel drops from the final kill. Be prepared for their strongest enrage phase.

Critical limitation: Only one Colossal Jewel can be equipped per character, similar to Gheed's Fortune. Even if you socket multiple jewels into different gear slots, only one will be active. Choose carefully based on your build's primary damage type.

Best Builds for Colossal Ancients

The Colossal Ancients demand high single-target damage, capped resistances to survive triple Conviction auras, and sustain through the escalating enrage phases. Builds that deal physical or magic damage have a natural advantage since all three Ancients have elemental immunities.

S+

Smiter Paladin

Smite cannot miss, deals physical damage (no immunity issues), and procs Life Tap from Dracul's Grasp for unmatched sustain. Holy Shield provides massive defense against the Ancients' melee attacks. The gold standard for pinnacle boss content.

S

Echoing Strike Warlock

The Warlock's Echoing Strike can hit up to 160,000 damage with insane life leech, making this the highest raw DPS option for Colossal Ancients. Sigils provide additional AoE. Semi-budget gear with Enigma, Spirit, and Arachnid's Mesh is enough to clear.

→ Full Build Guide
A

Hammerdin

Blessed Hammer deals magic damage — it bypasses all three Ancients' elemental immunities entirely. Safe ranged playstyle keeps you away from enrage AoE zones. Slower kill speed than Smiter or Warlock but extremely consistent.

A

Fist of the Heavens Paladin

Strong ranged option that deals magic and lightning damage. Excellent crowd control against Protector Spirit minions. Pairs well with Holy Shield for survivability. Works best when avoiding Madawc as the last kill (lightning immunity).

Gear Requirements

Minimum requirements to attempt Colossal Ancients:

  • Overcapped resistances — Each Ancient's Conviction strips 100% of their element. Your base resistances must be high enough that after Conviction, you are still near 75%. Stack resist charms and all-resist gear.
  • Cannot Be Frozen — Korlic's cold attacks will freeze-lock you without it. Raven Frost ring is mandatory.
  • Life Tap or high sustain — Dracul's Grasp (Life Tap on striking) or Echoing Strike's innate life leech. Without sustain, the combined damage of three Ancients plus 15 minions will overwhelm you.
  • Full Rejuvenation Potions — Keep your belt full. Sudden damage spikes from enrage abilities can take you from full HP to critical in one hit.
  • Thawing Potions before entering — Stack Thawing Potions (they boost max cold resist temporarily) before transmuting the statues. This helps survive Korlic's cold attacks.

Common Mistakes

Not overcapping resistances

Each Conviction aura strips 100% of one element. You need stacked all-resist charms and gear to compensate. Without overcapping, you will take devastating elemental damage throughout the fight.

Fighting near the map edges

A known bug can prevent the jewel from dropping or cause enrage triggers to behave unpredictably when fighting near arena boundaries. Stay in the center of the Colossal Summit.

Leaving and rejoining mid-fight

Exiting the Colossal Summit and re-entering can break the Ancients' enrage states and prevent jewel drops. Once you enter, commit to the fight.

Ignoring the minions

Each Ancient summons up to 5 Protector Spirit minions (15 total). They have Extra Fast and element immunities. If you ignore them, the combined damage will overwhelm your sustain. Thin the herd periodically.

No kill order planning

The jewel you get depends on which Ancient you kill last. If you randomly kill Ancients without planning, you may get a jewel that does not match your build at all.

Relying on a mercenary for damage

Mercenaries die extremely quickly to the triple Conviction auras and enrage abilities. Bring your merc for aura support, but do not depend on them surviving the full fight.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you unlock the Colossal Ancients in D2R?

You need to collect five Colossal Ancient Statues from Terrorized Act Bosses on Hell difficulty: Talic's Anguish (Andariel), Korlic's Pain (Duriel), Madawc's Ire (Mephisto), Bul-Kathos' Nightmare (Diablo), and Worusk's End (Baal). Place all five in the Horadric Cube and transmute while in Act 5 to open a red portal to the Colossal Summit.

What are the best builds for Colossal Ancients in D2R?

The Smiter Paladin is the safest and most reliable build — Smite cannot miss, deals physical damage, and Life Tap from Dracul's Grasp provides sustain through the massive damage. The Echoing Strike Warlock is extremely powerful with high single-target damage and life leech. The Hammerdin works well since Blessed Hammer deals magic damage that bypasses the Ancients' elemental immunities.

What jewels do the Colossal Ancients drop in D2R?

Six unique Colossal Jewels exist, two per Ancient. The jewel you receive depends on which Ancient you kill last: Talic drops Defender's Fire or Defender's Bile, Korlic drops Protector's Frost or Protector's Stone, and Madawc drops Guardian's Thunder or Guardian's Light. All require Level 75 and only one can be equipped per character.

What is the kill order for Colossal Ancients?

The kill order depends on which jewel you want. Kill the Ancient whose jewel you want LAST, since the jewel reward is determined by the last Ancient standing. Many players kill Korlic first because his final-phase Blizzard + Cold Fissure combo is widely considered the most dangerous enrage mechanic. Plan your order around your build's strengths and desired jewel.

How do you farm Colossal Ancient Statues in D2R?

Statues drop from Terrorized Act Bosses on Hell difficulty. Use Worldstone Shards to terrorize specific acts: Western Shard (Act 1 — Andariel), Eastern Shard (Act 2 — Duriel), Southern Shard (Act 3 — Mephisto), Deep Shard (Act 4 — Diablo), Northern Shard (Act 5 — Baal). Statues are not guaranteed drops, so you may need multiple runs per statue.

Can you equip multiple Colossal Jewels in D2R?

No. You can only have one Colossal Jewel equipped per character, similar to how Gheed's Fortune works. Even if you socket multiple Colossal Jewels into different gear pieces, only one will be active. Choose your jewel carefully based on your build's primary damage type.

What are the Colossal Ancients' enrage mechanics?

Each Ancient enrages at 50% HP and again at roughly 25% HP, gaining new abilities. When the first Ancient dies, the remaining two unlock enhanced attacks: Talic's Whirlwind leaves fiery Dust Devils, Korlic's Leap Attacks cast Cold Fissure, and Madawc's attacks release Charged Bolts. When the second Ancient dies, the last survivor gains its most dangerous abilities — Talic summons Colossal Volcanoes, Korlic casts Blizzard with each leap, and Madawc evokes Colossal Thunderstorm.
