D2R Boss Farming Guide — All Major Targets

By the DiabloBytes team · Updated May 2026

D2R\'s endgame is built around boss farming loops. Each major boss has a different drop table, time-per-kill cost, and gear requirement — so the optimal farm changes as your character progresses. This page covers every major boss farming target with strategies, recommended builds, and the canonical tricks (Mephisto moat, Pindleskin Red Portal loop, Travincal council burst).

Farm Tier Quick Reference

S Best Overall: Andariel + Mephisto + DClone

Best drop tables in the game. Mephisto for bulk MF, Andy for HR-rolls early-ladder, DClone for the only Annihilus source.

A Best Per-Second: Pindleskin + Travincal Council

15-90 second loops. Pindleskin for per-time MF, Travincal for high-rune drops at scale.

A Best XP: Baal Waves + Chaos Sanctuary

Post-90 XP rates from these two outpace any density farm. Public games multiply rate further.

B Density Farms: Cow Level + Pit / Ancient Tunnels

Lower per-mob value but high density makes them great for set / unique base farming and gem / rune charm pickup.

Boss-by-Boss Strategy

Andariel

S

Location: Catacombs Level 4 (Act 1)

MF rating: Excellent

Drops: Stone of Jordan, Manald Heal, Arctic Furs, set items, and runes up to Lo. Strong early-ladder farm because her drop table favors uniques over high-quality magic items.

Strategy: Run from Outer Cloister WP → Barracks → Jail → Catacombs 2 → 3 → 4. Andy hits hard with poison; bring max poison resist and an antidote potion. Tank her with shielded melee or kite at range.

Best classes: Hammerdin (immune-skip), Blizzard Sorc (kite + cold immunity for her green poison waves), Javazon (lightning vs poison-immune resist mix)

Mephisto

S

Location: Durance of Hate Level 3 (Act 3)

MF rating: Best in game

Drops: High-rune farm target. The Stone of Jordan, Mara's Kaleidoscope, Skullder's Ire, and most high-tier uniques drop here. "Moat trick" lets you damage him from across the river safely.

Strategy: Run from Durance of Hate Level 2 WP → Level 3 → Mephisto. Use the moat trick: stand on the inner edge of the moat, lure Mephisto to the opposite side, ranged-burst him while he can't path to you. Quintessential MF farm.

Best classes: Blizzard Sorc (moat trick from across the river is foundational), Hammerdin, Lightning Javazon (immunity check needed), Necromancer with mercenary tank

Diablo

A

Location: Chaos Sanctuary (Act 4)

MF rating: Very Good

Drops: Top-tier uniques (Stormshield, Wizardspike, Tyrael's Might shot at lower priority), high runes, set items. Chaos Sanctuary council is just as valuable.

Strategy: River of Flame WP → Chaos Sanctuary → kill Three Seal Bosses (Vizier, De Seis, Infector) → Diablo spawns. Stand-still and tank with high lightning resist or kite his Lightning Hose. Lightning Sorc / Hammerdin the easiest pilots.

Best classes: Hammerdin (immune-skip + magic damage owns all 3 seal bosses), Lightning Javazon, Blizzard Sorc (cold immune-aware)

Baal

A

Location: Worldstone Chamber (Act 5)

MF rating: Very Good (XP King)

Drops: Best XP source in the game post-90, high-tier uniques, runes, and minion-wave drops. The wave fights are often more profitable than Baal himself.

Strategy: Throne of Destruction → kill 5 minion waves → fight Baal solo. XP runs skip the actual Baal kill — just the waves. Public Baal-runs games speedrun the whole sequence.

Best classes: Hammerdin (waves trivial), Javazon, Frenzy Barbarian, Werebear Druid

Pindleskin

A

Location: Outside Anya's Frigid Highlands (Act 5)

MF rating: Best per-second farm

Drops: Single-mob in a 3-mob pack just outside the Red Portal. Top MF efficiency for a low-time-investment farm. High runes possible, all uniques weighted toward end-game.

Strategy: 15-second farm: enter Red Portal, kill the 3-mob Pindle pack, return to town, re-enter portal, repeat. Need monster levels of 86 (Hell) for top drop weights. Crushing Blow and high MF gear maximize returns.

Best classes: Lightning Sorc (one-shot at high gear), Smite Paladin, Frenzy Barb

Travincal Council

A

Location: Travincal (Act 3)

MF rating: Best per-second high-rune farm

Drops: Top 3-pack farm for high runes (Lo, Sur, Vex weighted). Council members count as "Super Unique" for drop calculations. Regularly drops Ohm, Sur, Vex in bulk farming.

Strategy: Travincal WP → council pack on stairs to Mephisto (3 council members). Burst them down with Concentration Hammerdin or Lightning Sorc Static Field setup. 60-90 second loop including teleport + town runs.

Best classes: Hammerdin (S-tier here — magic damage owns all council members), Blizzard Sorc, Lightning Javazon, Smiter

Cow King (Secret Cow Level)

B

Location: Moo Moo Farm

MF rating: Good for sets

Drops: Density makes the cow farm great for low-tier MF and item-base farming. Cow King drops mid-tier uniques and lots of mid-rune charms. The Wirt's Leg + Tome of Town Portal recipe in Cube opens the portal.

Strategy: Activate the cow level (Wirt's Leg + Tome of Town Portal in Cube on a finished-Diablo character). Run packs of cows for density-farm — Whirlwind, Hydra, Blizzard, Wake of Fire all dominate cow density.

Best classes: Whirlwind Barbarian, Wake of Fire Trapsin, Blizzard Sorc, Wind Druid

Diablo Clone (Uber Diablo)

S

Location: Random ladder spawn (any waypoint)

MF rating: Annihilus charm only

Drops: Drops Annihilus — the BiS small charm with +20 stats / +20 all res / +10% XP. Single drop reason to fight him. See the DClone Tracker for spawn timing.

Strategy: Watch the DClone tracker for "DClone is walking the earth" announcements. SoJ-economy-driven spawn — sell SoJ to NPCs to push the counter. Heavy lightning damage; bring lightning absorb or lightning resist over 75%.

Best classes: Smite Paladin (S-tier — uninterruptible Smite locks him out), Lightning Javazon, Frenzy Barb

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I farm first as a new ladder character?

Mephisto. The moat trick (stand across the river so he can't path to you) makes him the safest endgame farm in the game. His drop table includes most major uniques and high runes through Lo. Most players run Mephisto until they hit a build-defining unique, then graduate to Travincal council for high-rune chases or Pindleskin for per-time MF.

What is the moat trick on Mephisto?

Mephisto has melee path-finding limitations. Stand on the inner edge of the river separating his throne from the WP side, lure him to the opposite bank, and he will stand there casting spells that can't reach you while you ranged-burst him. Works best with Blizzard Sorc, Hammerdin, and any teleport-class. Doesn't work for melee builds — they have to engage directly.

How does Pindleskin rank against Mephisto for MF?

Pindleskin is faster per kill (15-second loop vs Mephisto's 60-second) but Mephisto has a much wider unique pool. Pindleskin's unique pool is heavily weighted toward end-game items (mlvl 86), while Mephisto has both early-build and end-game targets. New characters: Mephisto. Geared characters chasing specific high-end uniques: Pindleskin.

What is the Travincal council strategy?

Three council members spawn on the stairs leading down to Mephisto in Travincal (Act 3 WP). Each counts as a "Super Unique" for drop weighting, which makes them the densest high-rune farm in the game. Hammerdin one-shots all three with Blessed Hammer; Lightning Sorc Static-Fields them then nukes. 60-90 second loop including portal back to town. Top pick for Lo / Sur / Vex / Ohm rune farming.

How do I get the Annihilus charm?

Annihilus only drops from Diablo Clone (Uber Diablo). DClone spawns in ladder games when the SoJ economy hits a threshold — players sell Stones of Jordan to NPCs to push the counter. Watch the DClone tracker for "walking the earth" announcements, then enter any game in that region. Heavy lightning damage in the fight; Smite Paladin is the easiest pilot since Smite is uninterruptible.

What is the best build for general boss farming?

Hammerdin is the universal answer — Blessed Hammer's magic damage ignores all elemental immunities, deals huge AoE, and one-shots most bosses with end-game gear. Blizzard Sorcerer is the second pick due to Teleport mobility and the Mephisto moat trick. Lightning Javazon and Lightning Sorc are tied for third on raw boss DPS but need elemental-immunity awareness.
