Smite Paladin (Smiter) Build Guide — Uber Tristram Killer

By the DiabloBytes team · Updated March 2026

Overview

The Smite Paladin — universally known as the Smiter — is the undisputed king of Uber Tristram. Smite is the only attack in Diablo II that cannot miss, cannot be blocked, and ignores Defense entirely. Every single hit connects. Pair that with Crushing Blow (which shreds a percentage of the boss's remaining life per hit) and you have a character that can tear through Uber Mephisto, Uber Diablo, and Uber Baal regardless of their absurd hit point pools. Life Tap ensures you heal back more than you take in — making the Smiter nearly unkillable in the right gear.

The build does have weaknesses: it struggles against physical immune packs, has essentially no AoE for clear speed, and requires a specific gear setup to be truly effective. Smite also deals purely Physical Damage, which means Life Tap is mandatory for sustain. The good news is that a budget version comes together cheaply (Black Flail + Rhyme shield), and the endgame version with Grief Phase Blade and Exile is among the most satisfying build completions in all of D2R. This is not a leveling build — plan to respec at the end of Hell, or run as a Hammerdin/Zealot through the campaign.

Skill Allocation

Put 1 point into Cleansing, Vigor, and Salvation for utility. Then max the following in order:

Holy Shield — 20 points (max first). Boosts Chance to Block to 75%, increases Defense, adds Smite Damage, and dramatically improves Faster Block Rate via a hidden mechanic. Always cast this before combat.
Fanaticism — 20 points (max second). Your primary aura. Grants Attack Rating, bonus damage, and Increased Attack Speed to you and all allies. Keep this active at all times during combat.
Smite — 20 points (max third). Your primary damage skill. Attacks with your shield, always hits regardless of Attack Rating, cannot be blocked, and stuns/knocks back regular monsters. Note: Deadly Strike and Critical Strike do NOT apply to Smite.
Resist Lightning — 20 points (max last). Each point adds +0.5% to your maximum Lightning Resistance passively — this is a hidden mechanic not shown in the tooltip. Critical for surviving Uber Mephisto's Conviction Aura.
Zeal — 1–5 points (remainder). Secondary attack for clearing packs. Hits up to 5 targets in succession. Requires Attack Rating unlike Smite. Use against density; use Smite against bosses.
Utility (1 pt each) — Cleansing (removes curses/poison from you and allies), Vigor (movement speed + Charge synergy), Salvation (emergency all-resist aura for Uber Mephisto's Conviction). These single points punch way above their weight.

Stat Points

Strength — Bare minimum to equip your gear. With Grief Phase Blade + Exile, that's typically 156 Str (Vortex Shield base). Charms and gear bonuses count toward the requirement; plan accordingly and don't over-invest.
Dexterity — Enough to reach 75% Chance to Block with Holy Shield active. Holy Shield dramatically inflates your block chance — you need far less Dex than you think. Check the block % in the character screen with Holy Shield active and stop there.
Vitality — Everything else goes here. A large life pool is your buffer against Uber Mephisto's Conviction-amplified lightning between Life Tap procs. Aim for 3,000+ life fully buffed (Call to Arms Battle Orders is essential).
Energy — Base only. Smite costs only 2 mana per use. Mana is a non-issue for this build.

Gear

The Smiter has three distinct gear tiers. The budget version works fine for Ubers — the upgrade path primarily adds more Crushing Blow, tankiness, and quality of life. Life Tap is mandatory at all tiers; you need a source of it on your kit (Dracul's Grasp, Exile, or a Wand of Life Tap on weapon swap).

Weapon

Best: Grief Phase Blade — The flat Damage +x rolls (330–400) apply directly to Smite even though it doesn't show on the tooltip. Highest Smite damage in the game. Also provides +IAS and Life steal.
Mid: Last Wish Phase Blade — Socketed with Jah·Mal·Jah·Sur·Jah·Ber. Provides 95% Crushing Blow on its own, Life Tap on striking, and Might Aura when equipped. Endgame alternative to Grief.
Budget: Black (Mal+Tir) in a Flail — Knockback + Life Steal + Crushing Blow in a cheap runeword. Effective for first Ubers attempt.

Shield (Off-Hand)

Best: Exile (Vex·Ohm·Ist·Dol) in an Elite Ethereal Paladin Shield — Life Tap on striking, Defiance aura, +2 all Paladin skills, Replenish Life. Recommended base: Vortex Shield (156 Str req) with high all-resist roll. Ethereal is fine since Exile self-repairs.
Budget: Rhyme (Shael·Eth) in any Paladin shield — Cannot Be Frozen, +25% all resists, 20% increased block. Very cheap and effective for early Ubers.
Alt Budget: Sanctuary (Ko·Ko·Mal) — Magic damage to undead, slows, decent all-resists.

Helmet

Best: Crown of Ages — 1–2 sockets, Damage Reduction, high resists, Cannot Be Frozen. Top survival helmet.
Standard: Guillaume's Face — 35% Crushing Blow + 15% Deadly Strike. Core Crushing Blow source for the standard build.
Budget: Rockstopper or Kira's Guardian (Cannot Be Frozen + resists).

Body Armor

Best: Chains of Honor (Dol·Um·Ber·Ist) — +2 all skills, 65% all resists, 8% Life leech. Best pure survivability armor.
Alt: Enigma (Jah·Ith·Ber) — Teleport for mobility, +2 skills, massive strength. Allows telestomp and rapid repositioning in Ubers.
Budget Proc: Treachery (Shael·Thul·Lem) — Equip on swap, take a fire hit near River of Flame waypoint to proc Fade (15% Damage Reduction + 60% all resists for 288 sec), then swap back to main armor. Standard pre-Uber prep ritual.

Gloves

Best: Dracul's Grasp — 25% chance to cast Life Tap on striking, Open Wounds, Life steal. One of the best Life Tap sources if you're not using Exile.
Alt: Laying of Hands — 20% IAS, 350% damage to demons. Strong damage boost against Uber bosses who are all demons.
Budget: Blood Crafted Gloves (Crushing Blow + Open Wounds + Life Leech).

Belt

Best: Verdungo's Hearty Cord — Damage Reduction, +Vitality, Replenish Life. High survivability.
Alt: Thundergod's Vigor (+max lightning res), String of Ears (Damage Reduction + Life leech), or Blood Crafted Belt (Open Wounds + resistances).

Boots

Best: Gore Rider — 15% Crushing Blow + 15% Open Wounds. Best Crushing Blow boots in the game.
Budget: Goblin Toe — 25% Crushing Blow, cheaper and still excellent. Standard budget Crushing Blow boots.

Amulet

Best: Mara's Kaleidoscope — +2 all skills, 20–30% all resists, +5 all attributes.
Alt: Seraph's Hymn (+2 Paladin skills, +2 all skills), or a crafted Safety Amulet with blocking and resists.

Rings

Best: Raven Frost (Cannot Be Frozen — mandatory if not on helm/shield) + Bul-Kathos' Wedding Band (Life leech + skills).
Alt 2nd ring: Dwarf Star (fire absorb + magic damage reduction) or Wisp Projector (lightning absorb).

Weapon Swap

Essential: Call to Arms (Amn·Ral·Mal·Ist·Ohm) in a Crystal Sword + Spirit shield. Swap to this before every run to buff Battle Command + Battle Orders. This dramatically increases your life pool.
If no Exile/Dracul's: Keep a Wand of Life Tap on swap and manually cast Life Tap on Uber bosses before switching back.

Mercenary

Hire an Act 2 Nightmare Offensive (Might Aura) mercenary. The Might Aura boosts your Smite damage directly. Note: mercenaries are nearly impossible to keep alive in Uber Tristram — don't equip your best gear on them for Uber runs. However, for general farming, a well-geared merc is a massive DPS boost.

Merc Weapon — The Reaper's Toll (Decrepify on striking + 11–15% Life steal). Decrepify reduces Uber physical resistance and slows them — massive DPS boost. Best in slot. Budget: Insight polearm (Meditation aura for mana regen while farming).
Merc Armor — Treachery in a non-Ethereal base to proc Fade on yourself before Uber runs (merc takes a fire hit → Fade procs → swap to your main armor). Alternatively Fortitude for endgame farming survivability.
Merc Helmet — Vampire Gaze (Life steal + Damage Reduction + Magic Damage Reduction) for survivability during farming. Budget: Kira's Guardian (Cannot Be Frozen + resists) works well.

Playstyle Tips

  • Pre-buff ritual before every Uber run: Swap to CTA → cast Battle Command twice → cast Battle Orders → swap back. Then cast Holy Shield. This can add 1,000+ life to your pool. Non-negotiable.
  • Proc Fade before entering Ubers: Equip Treachery on your merc (non-ethereal base), walk near a fire source at River of Flame waypoint to get your merc hit by fire, proc Fade (15% DR + 60% all resists for 288 sec), then swap to your actual armor. This is the standard Smiter prep ritual.
  • Life Tap is your lifeline: If you don't have Exile or Dracul's, keep a Wand of Life Tap on your weapon swap. Swap to it, cast Life Tap on the Uber boss, then swap back to Grief. You should see your life orb refilling on every Smite hit. If it's not, you're in trouble.
  • Smite vs Zeal: Use Smite exclusively against bosses — it always hits. Switch to Zeal when clearing packs of regular monsters (Zeal hits multiple targets and benefits from Attack Rating). Don't use Smite to clear trash; it's too slow.
  • Fanaticism must be active: Never Smite without Fanaticism running. The IAS and damage bonus from Fanaticism is central to the build's damage output. Check that your aura is active before you engage a boss.
  • Crushing Blow is your primary damage stat: Against Ubers with millions of HP, raw weapon damage barely matters. 95%+ Crushing Blow (achievable with Grief + Gore Rider + Guillaume's or Last Wish) is what actually kills them fast. Stack it aggressively.
  • Uber Mephisto counter-play: His level 20 Conviction Aura will wreck your resistances. Salvation at 1pt helps as a panic swap. Better solution: reach level 21 Conviction yourself (via Conquer gear) to cancel his aura entirely. At minimum, keep your resists as high as possible going in.
  • Avoid getting surrounded by Physical Immune packs: Smite deals only Physical Damage. If you get trapped by PI mobs you can't kill them — use Smite's knockback to create space and escape. The Smiter is a boss killer, not a clear-speed build.

Leveling Progression

Smite is available from level 1 but this is a respec build. Level as a Hammerdin or Zealot, then respec into Smiter once you have the gear to support it:

Levels 1–17 — Zeal + Holy Fire through early Normal. Point into Might/Thorns for early damage. Smite is technically available but too slow for trash clear.
Levels 18–24 — Blessed Hammer becomes available at 18. Start dumping points into Blessed Hammer + Concentration and level as a Hammerdin through late Normal/Nightmare. It's dramatically faster than trying to Smite your way through content.
Levels 25–60 — Continue leveling as Hammerdin or Zealot through Hell difficulty. Assemble your Smiter gear in the meantime: get Exile made, find/buy a Phase Blade base for Grief, acquire Dracul's or plan your Life Tap source.
Levels 60+ (Respec) — Use your Hell difficulty respec to go full Smiter. Priority order: max Holy Shield → max Fanaticism → max Smite → max Resist Lightning. Drop 1pt into Cleansing, Vigor, Salvation. Equip your gear, hit Call to Arms, cast Holy Shield, and you're ready for Ubers.

Highlight Smiter Drops

Highlight Guillaume's Face, Gore Riders, Phase Blade bases for Grief, Dracul's Grasp, and Vortex Shield bases for Exile. Torch drops are why you're running Ubers — make sure those stand out too.
