Is Diablo IV Worth Playing in 2026?

By the DiabloBytes team · Updated April 2026 · Pre-LoH launch assessment

⚡ TL;DR

Yes, especially now. Lord of Hatred launches April 28, 2026 with a free skill tree rework, 2 new classes, new region, and the returning Horadric Cube. Season 4 (2024) already fixed the launch-era problems. Buy base D4 + Lord of Hatred Standard ($39.99) — LoH bundles Vessel of Hatred.

What Was Broken at Launch

Diablo IV launched in June 2023 with real problems. The most-cited criticisms:

  • Thin itemization — legendary aspects mattered, almost nothing else did
  • No compelling endgame past World Tier 4
  • Patch 1.1.0 nerfs gutted XP and class balance (Season 1 disaster)
  • Paragon Board felt like busywork, not a meaningful choice
  • Nightmare Dungeons devolved into a glyph XP treadmill
  • Resistance system was broken (everyone ran 0 res, stacked armor)
  • Trading + economy felt stillborn

What's Fixed (as of April 2026)

  • Itemization (Season 4 — Loot Reborn) Tempering + Masterworking + Greater Affixes + account-wide Codex of Power. Completely new gear progression.
  • Endgame depth The Pit (Tiers 1-150) + Helltide Reborn + Infernal Hordes + Kurast Undercity + Lair Bosses + Tower + Leaderboards.
  • Resistance overhaul Season 2 Patch 1.2. Resistances now meaningful. Cap at 70% required at Torment III+.
  • Torment difficulty system VoH replaced World Tiers. 4 Torment tiers today, 12 in LoH. Smooth scaling ladder.
  • Paragon 300 cap Meaningful board choices, multiple glyph slots, legendary node routing.
  • Balance cadence Mid-season tuning, PTR cycles, transparent developer updates.
  • Build diversity Most classes have 3-5 viable S-tier builds per season. Multiple archetypes per class.
  • Armory feature (S7) Save + switch 5 full builds. Ends respec friction.
  • Loot filter (LoH) Finally shipping April 28, 2026. Free for all players.

What Lord of Hatred Adds (April 28)

  • Paladin + Warlock (2 new classes — total 8)
  • Skovos region + Temis hub city
  • Horadric Cube returns (affix modification, unique fusion, transfiguration)
  • War Plans — chain 5 endgame activities into custom playlists
  • Echoing Hatred — endless-wave pinnacle mode above The Pit
  • Full skill tree rework (free for all — Key Passives removed)
  • Charms + Talismans slot system
  • Level cap 60 → 70
  • Fishing (casual side activity)
  • 12 Torment tiers (up from 4)

Verdict By Player Type

New to action RPGs Buy. D4 is the most accessible modern ARPG. Campaign is excellent for first-timers.
Bounced at launch (June 2023) Come back. The game is unrecognizable from launch. Start fresh seasonal.
Loved D2/D2R Worth trying. D4 is more streamlined + open-world. Not a D2 replacement but works alongside.
Path of Exile or Last Epoch main Mixed. D4 lacks the deep systems of PoE/LE. But the Pit + new Horadric Cube narrows the gap.
Left after Season 6 Spiritborn drama Yes, come back. Balance is vastly improved. Non-Spiritborn builds are competitive again.
Competitive pusher Definitely. Tower + Leaderboards (Jan 2026) established the competitive scene. Pit 150 + LoH 12 Torment tiers = massive ceiling.

Quick Recommendation

  • Verdict (2026) Yes
  • Best Entry Point S13 + LoH launch
  • Launch Date Apr 28, 2026
