World Tiers & Torment Progression

By the DiabloBytes team · Updated July 2026 · Season 14: Death Awakening · Patch 3.1.1

Diablo IV's difficulty ladder has two phases: leveling difficulties (Normal → Hard → Expert → Penitent) and Torment tiers (I → XII, expanded from four by Lord of Hatred). Each tier adds XP and gold bonuses and unlocks new loot, plus more monster health and damage. Proper difficulty progression is the biggest XP multiplier in the game — missing it is the single largest beginner mistake.

Leveling Tiers (Pre-Cap)

Tier XP / Gold Unlock
Normal +0% Default
Hard +75% Default — start here
Expert +125% After Prologue
Penitent +175% After campaign complete

Torment Tiers (Endgame)

Tier Unlocks At New This Tier
Torment I Level 70 + Pit 10 Ancestral items; more Legendary / Unique / Mythic drops
Torment II Pit 15 Legendary Temper Manuals, Scroll of Restoration
Torment III Pit 20 Set Charms
Torment IV Pit 25 Neathiron
Torment V Pit 30 Legendary Runes
Torment VI Pit 40 Greater Lair Keys
Torment VII Pit 50 Volatile Primordial Dust
Torment VIII Pit 60 Unique Charms
Torment IX Pit 70 Kullean Tuning Prisms
Torment X Pit 80 Mythic Horadric Seals; max gold bonus
Torment XI Pit 90 Higher drop quantities
Torment XII Pit 100 Highest difficulty

At Torment, sub-Legendary items convert to crafting materials automatically and Ancestral drops begin at Torment I. Each Torment tier adds +100% monster-kill experience, with gold bonuses scaling up to +300% at Torment X-XII. Greater Affix odds and masterworking material drops also scale with Torment tier.

Key Mechanics

  • Cap your resistances at 70% The old per-tier Torment Armor and Resistance penalties were removed in the Season 11 defense rework — higher Torment no longer docks your defenses. You still want all resistances at the 70% cap for the damage reduction, but you no longer have to over-stack to offset a penalty.
  • Monster level scaling Higher tiers raise monster level, which raises the base item level of your drops. Push only as high as you can clear comfortably — the per-tier loot unlocks matter more than raw tier.
  • Tormented bosses Lair Bosses gain Tormented versions at Torment difficulty — more summon materials but dramatically higher Mythic Unique drop rates.
  • Paragon Glyph XP scales Higher Torment = better NMD sigil crafting = faster Glyph leveling.
  • Continuous scaling The 12-tier Torment system added in Lord of Hatred smooths the old cliff between Torment IV and Pit 100+ content — progression is now a continuous climb from T1 to T12.
