Paladin — Diablo IV Class Guide

By the DiabloBytes team · Updated July 2026 · Season 14: Death Awakening · Patch 3.1.1

The Paladin returns from Diablo II as a holy melee fighter wielding swords, hammers, and shields — including shields thrown across the screen. Paladins channel Faith as their primary resource and specialize at Level 15 via the Oath System, which rewrites how skills interact and effectively gives one class four distinct archetypes. After the Lord of Hatred skill-tree rework, the Paladin settled into a solid mid-tier class — excellent group utility, strong survivability, and the densest legendary aspect pool of any class — though the rework reshuffled its Season 12 dominance, and Paladin remains a strong S-tier class in Season 14 after 3.1.0 Oath buffs.

The Oath System

At Level 15, every Paladin chooses one of four Oaths. The Oath rewrites how Faith generates, how Core skills scale, and which layered defensive/offensive resources appear. Respec is free — swap Oaths freely to try all four archetypes.

Juggernaut Shield Tank

Armor and block-rate stacking with a "Resolve" layered resource. Shield-tank archetype — Shield Bash, Shield of Retribution, turns every block into offense.

Zealot Melee DPS

Fervor stacks on Zealot skill casts. At max stacks, crits echo for +17% per stack. Melee DPS with high attack-speed uptime — Brandish, Zeal, Shield Charge.

Judicator Ranged Holy Magic

Bonus Holy damage, stronger vs demons and undead. Classic D2 Hammerdin feel — Blessed Hammer, Fist of the Heavens, Divine Lance pillars.

Disciple Arbiter Form

Disciple skills fill an "Arbiter" meter that transforms the Paladin into a 20-second angelic form that auto-casts Wing Strikes. With enough CDR, uptime approaches 100%. Was the top Pit-pushing archetype in Season 12, before the Lord of Hatred rework.

Top Season 14 Builds (Provisional)

Rankings reflect the current Season 14 endgame meta after the Lord of Hatred skill-tree rework. No Paladin build sits at S-tier this season — the rework reshuffled the class out of its Season 12 dominance — so these are the strongest current picks, not class-wide top-of-the-ladder builds.

A
Blessed Hammer Paladin Judicator

Classic D2 Hammerdin — holy hammers spiral around you for smooth AoE clear. One of the strongest current Season 14 endgame picks.

Endgame
A
Divine Lance Paladin Judicator

Spear-throwing Core build with strong mobility and ranged holy burst. A current top endgame pick after the Lord of Hatred rework.

Endgame
A
Clash Paladin Zealot

Aggressive charge-in Basic-skill build reworked with Lord of Hatred. Fast and one of the current endgame picks.

Endgame
B
Auradin Paladin Disciple

Passive aura damage via Holy Light + the Dawnfire unique — kills by proximity. Strong but gear-gated (requires Dawnfire).

Gear-gated
B
Shield of Retribution Juggernaut

Thorns build — Blessed Shield morphs into slow, screen-clearing thorn disks. The tankiest Paladin option.

Tank
B
Fist of the Heavens Judicator

Chaining holy-lightning AoE. Great for dense Helltide farming.

Speedfarm
B
Wing Strikes Paladin Disciple

Arbiter Form auto-casts Wing Strikes for passive screen clear. Season 12’s #1 pusher — still viable, but reshuffled down by the rework.

Bossing

Category assignments reflect the post-Lord of Hatred skill-tree layout.

Skill Tree Structure

Six active branches define the reworked Paladin tree (the old Key Passives branch was removed in Lord of Hatred):

  • Basic — Faith generators — Brandish, Holy Bolt, Clash, Advance.
  • Core — Faith spenders — Zeal, Blessed Hammer, Blessed Shield, Divine Lance, Shield Bash.
  • Aura — Party buffs and auto-damage — Fanaticism, Defiance, Holy Light.
  • Valor — Defense and mobility — Shield Charge, Aegis, Falling Star, Rally.
  • Justice — Cooldown skills — Purify, Consecration, Condemn, Spear of the Heavens.
  • Ultimate — Heaven’s Fury, Fortress, Zenith, Arbiter of Justice.
  • Key Passives (removed) — Coat of Arms, Path of the Penitent, Exaltation, Judgement Day — this branch was removed in the Lord of Hatred rework; its effects were folded into the reworked tree.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • + Excellent group utility and survivability
  • + Four distinct archetypes via Oaths
  • + Best group-carry class for Pit
  • + Heavy armor + block + Defiance Unstoppable
  • + Arbiter Form near-100% uptime with CDR

Weaknesses

  • - Oath choice gates playstyle hard
  • - Top builds require specific uniques (Dawnfire)
  • - Slow Faith regen without correct Basic
  • - Melee Zealot weak vs Tormented bosses without layering
  • - Aura stacking sacrifices single-target burst

Gearing Priorities

Materials to prioritise as your Paladin climbs into endgame:

  • Obducite Masterworking bottleneck. Farm Kurast Undercity (Tribute of Refinement) + Infernal Hordes + Treasure Breach rotation.
  • Boss Lair Keys Summon materials for Dawnfire (Auradin enabler) and other Paladin-key uniques. Tribute of Titans in Undercity is the fastest key source.
  • Murmuring Obols + Pale Marks Gamble Paladin Legendary Aspects as you gear up.
  • Runes of Ritual Runeword materials — Paladin builds lean heavily on runeword synergies.
  • Gold to cap Masterworking and reroll costs scale hard at Level 70 gear. Cap is reachable.
  • Royal Gems Socket prep for Paladin uniques.

What NOT to bank: Glyph XP — glyphs do not transfer between classes. Level Paladin glyphs fresh.
