Skovos — The Amazon Isles

By the DiabloBytes team · Updated April 2026 · Region lore for Lord of Hatred

Skovos — the Skovos Isles, the Amazon Islands — has haunted the margins of Diablo lore since Diablo II. It is the homeland of the Askari, the matriarchal warrior society the rest of Sanctuary calls Amazons. Until Lord of Hatred, Skovos was only ever mentioned in books and background lore. With the expansion, the archipelago is finally playable — and Mephisto is driving straight for its sacred heart.

Geography

The archipelago sits in the Twin Seas and consists of four main islands: Philios, Skovos, Lycander, and Skartara. In-game terrain spans "volcanic frontiers in the west, dense forests in the east, and vast drowned expanses in between" — crumbling temples and shores drowned by a forgotten cataclysm. More than thirty named locations appear on the world map, including Akarat's Bulwark, the Cosmic Archives, Mount Hefaetrus South Face, the Temple of Life, Myssena, and the Sisterlands.

Ancient History

Blizzard's official copy calls Skovos "the ancient birthplace of the firstborn civilization and the former home of Lilith and Inarius." This is the territory of the Pools of Creation — where the first nephalem arose, children of the fallen angel Inarius and the demon queen Lilith. It is, in the most literal Diablo-lore sense, the birthplace of humanity.

When the Worldstone was altered by Inarius and the nephalem's descendants were hidden away, much of Skovos fell into isolation. The Askari remained, keeping the old rites while the rest of Sanctuary moved on. A cataclysm — its exact nature still debated in-game texts — drowned coastal stretches and toppled ancient temples, leaving the archipelago scarred and fractured.

Rulers & Inhabitants

Skovos is governed by a dual authority:

Amazon Queen Adriana

Secular ruler. Commands the Askari military — described by Blizzard as "one of the last intact military organizations in Sanctuary."

The Oracle Queen

Spiritual authority. Unnamed in current Blizzard materials. Interprets the Pools of Creation and the old rites.

Threats in Skovos

  • Mephisto cultists Corrupted worshippers of the Prime Evil of Hatred, seeding his influence through Skovos society.
  • Oceanic horrors Drowned creatures emerging from the Twin Seas and the flooded ruins of the old coast.
  • Abyssal corruption Unnatural aberrations spawned from Mephisto’s approach — hatred made flesh.
  • Grigg’Sal’Tosh the Fathomless Confirmed region boss. Deep-sea entity tied to the drowned ruins.
  • The Hateborn Abomination Giant sea serpent revealed in IGN’s gameplay showcase. Spits pressurized water, summons smaller serpents.

Why Mephisto Targets Skovos

Mephisto, freed from Neyrelle's soulstone at the end of Vessel of Hatred, is heading for the Pools of Creation. The Pools are where the first nephalem were born — the seed of humanity itself. Mephisto's plan is not invasion but inversion: corrupt the source, and every soul that descends from it carries hatred's mark.

Unlike Lilith's overt campaign in base Diablo IV, Mephisto works through manipulation. He dissolves institutions from within — turning religion against itself, seeding cults in Amazon villages, corrupting the Oracle tradition. The Askari's rigid military structure and the Oracle Queen's spiritual authority are both targets. If either falls, Skovos falls, and the Pools become Mephisto's.

Temis — The Endgame Hub

Temis is the marble capital of Skovos — Greek-inspired, with colonnades, tiered plazas, and giant statues of the early nephalem. Monuments to Lilith and Inarius are carved throughout the city, a uneasy reminder of what Skovos was.

Post-campaign, Temis replaces Kyovashad as the main hub. Blizzard designed it to answer the scattered-vendor complaint in base Diablo IV — everything important lives in a single compact plaza:

  • Horadric Cube — the returning crafting artifact
  • War Plans interface — the new endgame playlist system
  • All four artisans (Blacksmith, Jeweler, Alchemist, Occultist)
  • Purveyor of Curiosities — Obol gambling
  • Entrance to The Pit and the Tower
  • Entrance to Echoing Hatred — the endless-wave event
