The first major brain teaser during the Lord of Hatred campaign requires players to activate three altars in a specific sequence.

Rathma's puzzle marks the first major brain teaser players encounter during Diablo 4's Lord of Hatred campaign. Found while exploring Skovos in the Archive of the Makers, this puzzle appears during the A Blade's Weight quest and follows a classic "choose three things in the right order" mechanic that many ARPGs employ.

The puzzle centers on a Rathmic Statue flanked by six altars—three in front and three further back with skulls resting on each. Players must activate these altars in the correct sequence to progress toward the Temple of Light with Lorath.

What Changed

While this content has been part of Diablo 4 since launch, it represents one of the game's earliest puzzle encounters designed for new players progressing through the main campaign. The puzzle tests whether players pay attention to environmental storytelling and written clues rather than brute-forcing solutions.

A Time-Worn Inscription near the statue contains the key hint: "Power born of Hell begets Corruption." Investigating the skull altars reveals they translate these capitalized words into ancient names: - Power translates to Dunaxys - Hell translates to Abythos - Corruption translates to Coruphar

The solution requires activating the altars in the exact order they appear in the inscription: first Dunaxys, then Abythos, and finally Coruphar. Successfully completing this sequence opens a hidden passage in the wall, allowing players to continue their journey.

What This Means for Players

For players progressing through Diablo 4's campaign, understanding puzzle mechanics like Rathma's challenge demonstrates how the game rewards observation over combat prowess. The inscription system encourages players to read environmental details rather than rushing past them.

This particular puzzle serves as a tutorial for similar challenges players may encounter later in the Lord of Hatred expansion content. Recognizing word patterns and paying attention to capitalized text can provide crucial hints without requiring external guides or walkthroughs.

What's Next

Players who successfully complete Rathma's puzzle will proceed to explore the Temple of Light alongside Lorath, continuing their progression through the campaign's narrative. The Lord of Hatred storyline offers additional puzzles and challenges as it unfolds, with this early encounter serving as an introduction to environmental problem-solving mechanics that Blizzard may revisit in future seasonal content or expansions.
