Blizzard Eliminates Mythic RNG Entirely in PTR 3.2.0 With New Horadric Cube Recipe
PTR testing August 4 to 11 introduces Upgrade Direct recipe that preserves all affixes when converting Uniques to Mythic quality.

The controversy around Mythic items has emerged as the defining issue of Diablo 4's fourteenth season, and Blizzard is back yet again with another foundational change to how the game's rarest loot works. PTR 3.2.0, scheduled for testing August 4 to 11, will do away with Mythic RNG entirely after player feedback rejected earlier compromises.
Season of Death Awakening launched last month following backlash against a major Mythic rework previewed in the PTR. Blizzard's initial response was a compromise: Mythic Uniques would always drop with two guaranteed stats while the other two remained random. That 50% determinism clearly wasn't sufficient for the community, prompting this latest reversal.
What's New
Blizzard outlined the following changes coming in PTR 3.2.0: - New "Upgrade Direct" recipe added to the Horadric Cube that converts a Unique item into its Mythic version while retaining all existing affixes and modifications - Tempering and Masterworking stats are fully preserved during the conversion process - The random factors are completely eliminated from this new recipe - Recipe cannot be used on Unmodifiable items, so players must avoid Transfiguring their best candidates before upgrading - Any Mythic created via Cube receives a "Crafted" tag - Players can equip only one Crafted Mythic at a time across all equipment slots
What This Means for Players
This represents the most significant quality-of-life improvement to Mythic acquisition since the item type's introduction. Previously, players investing significant resources into perfecting a Unique item through Tempering and Masterworking had no reliable path to convert it to Mythic without risking complete randomization of its stats.
The Upgrade Direct recipe fundamentally changes build planning for high-level play. Players can now target specific Uniques with desirable base properties and affix pools, knowing they can eventually upgrade those exact items to Mythic quality while keeping their carefully dialed-in modifications intact.
However, the Crafted tag restriction means players must choose strategically which single piece of their build will receive this treatment. Those seeking multiple Mythic upgrades for a single character will still need to rely on drops from the Jeweler or world content rather than the Cube.
What's Next
PTR 3.2.0 testing runs from August 4 through August 11, giving players approximately one week to provide feedback on whether these changes satisfy their concerns about Mythic determinism. Blizzard has not announced when these changes might arrive in the live game, though historically PTR feedback has influenced final patch implementations within weeks of testing completion.
Players concerned about accidentally Transfiguring potential upgrade candidates should hold off on any Unmodifiable item conversions until after the PTR period concludes and a live implementation date is confirmed.
