Diablo 4 Season 15 Adds Rebirth Feature for Character Continuity Across Seasons

The new option lets players transfer Eternal Realm characters to seasonal play while keeping cosmetics, appearance, and total playtime.

Diablo 4 will introduce a character Rebirth feature in Season 15, giving players the ability to transfer their Eternal Realm characters into seasonal play rather than starting fresh each ladder reset. The new option addresses one of the most persistent player complaints about the game's seasonal structure: the need to abandon progress and create entirely new characters every few months.

Currently, characters at season's end automatically convert to non-seasonal Eternal Realm status, where they often sit unused until players delete them to make room for new seasonal builds. Blizzard has been gradually refining its seasonal model since launch, and Season 15 represents a significant quality-of-life shift toward character preservation.

What Changed

Blizzard has detailed the following features coming in Season 15:

  • **Rebirth System**: Players can convert an Eternal Realm character to the seasonal realm using the new Rebirth function. The character's level resets to one, but total playtime accumulates across all rebirths.
  • **Preserved Elements**: Class selection, character name, appearance, and cosmetic preferences remain intact including pets, transmogs, mounts, portals, and headstones.
  • **Gear Warning**: Equipped items and inventory contents are lost upon Rebirth. A warning screen prompts players to transfer gear to their Eternal Realm stash before proceeding.
  • **Legacy Items Return**: Iconic items from previous Diablo titles will debut in Season 15, starting with the Stone of Jordan (Diablo 2) and Ring of Royal Grandeur (Diablo 3).
  • **New Activities**: Overland content includes challenge dungeons and open-world ambush events.
  • **Soul Splinters**: A new socketable item type offering powerful benefits alongside potent downsides for build experimentation.
  • What This Means for Players

The Rebirth feature fundamentally changes seasonal character management. Players who main a single class no longer need to create duplicate characters or delete their leveled favorites each season. The system preserves cosmetic investments and accumulated playtime, which Blizzard tracks across all rebirth instances on a given character.

Gear loss remains a hard reset—players must proactively move equipment to Eternal stash before converting. This creates a minor inconvenience but prevents seasonal item exploitation. The preservation of cosmetics like transmogs and mounts means players retain their preferred visual identity without regrinding those rewards.

The return of legacy items from Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 adds nostalgic power spikes that may shift early-season meta expectations. Stone of Jordan's famous +% to Maximum Mana and all Resistances proved foundational in D2's economy, while Ring of Royal Grandeur's set bonus reduction reshaped Diablo 3's endgame builds for years.

    What's Next

Blizzard will reveal additional Season 15 details at BlizzCon scheduled for September 12-13. A public test realm (PTR) phase runs August 4-11 where players can experience select new features before the season launches in September following BlizzCon.

Season 14 remains active, having introduced major Mythic item changes that initially drew negative community feedback. Blizzard has already deployed fixes and plans more deterministic crafting methods for Mythics in Season 15.
