Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the franchise, Blizzard has announced that Diablo 4's Season 15, titled Season of Hell's Legacy, will include a dedicated activity that recreates the original 1996 Diablo campaign. The announcement was made by Seasons Lead Owen Leach during a BlizzCon 2026 panel, confirming that players will be able to experience a modernized version of the classic game's progression within the current engine.

This move serves as a significant nod to the franchise's roots, blending the aesthetic and gameplay mechanics of Diablo 4 with the iconic level structure of the first game. While Blizzard has previously referenced classic elements, this marks the first time a near-complete campaign from Diablo 1 has been rebuilt specifically for Diablo 4's seasonal content.

What's New

The new activity is named Waking Nightmares and is described by Leach as "recreations of key moments from previous Diablo games, but built in D4's art style with D4's compelling gameplay."

There are three distinct types of Waking Nightmares dungeons. The most significant for classic fans is the Prime Evil Waking Nightmares tier, which focuses on "the most iconic moments, the moments that lead up to you killing Baal, Mephisto, Diablo."

The Diablo 1 recreation is the final dungeon in this tier. According to Leach, it is "actually a recreation of almost all of Diablo 1," allowing players to start in Tristram Cathedral, fight through the Catacombs and Caves, and finally descend into Hell to face "Big Red, the Dark Lord, Lord of Terror, Diablo."

These activities are integrated directly into the seasonal questline, ensuring that players encounter them as part of the standard progression flow rather than as optional side content.

What This Means for Players

For veterans of the original game, this offers a chance to revisit the linear dungeon crawl structure of 1996 with modern mobility, combat feel, and graphical fidelity. The traversal from the Cathedral to Hell provides a condensed but comprehensive tour of the original map's distinct environments.

Newer players who may have skipped the original title will get a guided introduction to the franchise's origins. The activity is designed to be accessible within the current endgame loop, requiring no prior knowledge of the 1996 mechanics while preserving the narrative beats of the original campaign.

The inclusion of these dungeons in the seasonal questline means they will likely offer seasonal-exclusive rewards or cosmetic unlocks tied to the 30th-anniversary celebration. Players should expect a mix of combat challenges and environmental storytelling that mirrors the pacing of the original game's descent.

What's Next

Diablo 4 Season 15, Season of Hell's Legacy, will launch following the conclusion of the current season. Details on specific reward tiers and difficulty settings for the Waking Nightmares are expected closer to the launch date.

Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo 5 is in development with a target release in 2029. The focus on legacy content in Diablo 4's final years suggests a strategy of celebrating the franchise's history while transitioning the community toward the next major installment.

Players should watch for further patch notes detailing the exact loot tables and difficulty modifiers associated with the Prime Evil Waking Nightmares dungeons.
