Whirlwind Barbarian — Endgame Build Guide

Updated May 2026 · Season 13: Reckoning / Lord of Hatred

Whirlwind Barbarian is the marquee build of Lord of Hatred. It creates Dust Devils as the channel runs. The expansion brought a channeling rework, the Bursting upgrade node (converts Whirlwind damage to Fire and burns enemies), a Gohr's Devastating Grips overhaul, and four-weapon multiplicative scaling — making the build a strong Pit pusher and Echoing Hatred option.

S-tier placement: Whirlwind sits at S on the Barbarian endgame tier list alongside Minion Barbarian. Self-spawning Dust Devils unlock at level 15 — usable in leveling, Pit, Tower, and Echoing Hatred.

Core Skills

Whirlwind (Bursting upgrade)

Primary skill. Channels continuously, scales off all four weapon slots, generates Dust Devils that AoE around you. Bursting node converts damage to Fire and burns enemies.

Iron Skin

Defensive cooldown + barrier source. Scales with Maximum Life.

Challenging Shout

Damage reduction + Fortify generation. Always on cooldown.

Rallying Cry

Movement Speed and Resource generation. Pre-cast before pulls.

War Cry

Damage multiplier window. Pop before bossing or dense pack engagement.

Leap (movement)

Map traversal + small AoE. Optional swap with Charge depending on map.

Required Gear

Slot Item Why
Gloves (Required) Gohr's Devastating Grips Massive Whirlwind damage bonus. Pulls enemies in every 2 seconds — keeps them inside Dust Devil radius.
2H Weapon (Required) Ramaladni's Magnum Opus Reworked in LoH — bonus now applies to all skills, not just skills using the weapon. Lets you take 2H scaling for Whirlwind without losing the multiplier.
Ring (Mythic) Ring of Starless Skies Damage and resource management. Top mythic for the build.
Pants Tibault's Will Damage and Primary Resource regeneration while Unstoppable. Pairs with Iron Skin/shout cycling for high uptime.
Helm Crown of Lucion Stacking damage multiplier (up to 75% mult at 5 stacks) — pairs with Whirlwind's constant resource spend.

Aspects & Multipliers

  • Aspect of Dire Whirlwind: The Whirlwind core scaling aspect.
  • Edgemaster's Aspect: Damage multiplier when at full Resource — pairs with Rallying Cry resource generation.
  • Aspect of Earthquakes: Adds Earthquake procs that compound with Whirlwind hits.
  • Aspect of Limitless Rage: Disabled in Hotfix 5 (May 5) after an infinite-scaling bug surfaced; re-enabled with the fix in Hotfix 7 (May 7).

Rotation

  1. 1
Pre-pull Cast Rallying Cry, Challenging Shout, and War Cry before engaging — all stack additive multipliers and Fortify.
  2. 2
Engage Leap or Charge into the pack. Activate Iron Skin for the barrier window.
  3. 3
Sustain Channel Whirlwind. Dust Devils auto-spawn. Keep moving to pull more enemies into Gohr's grip range.
  4. 4
Refresh Re-cast shouts on cooldown. Re-pop Iron Skin between elite hits. Tibault's Will rewards every Unstoppable window with damage and resource for 5 seconds — keep Challenging Shout on cooldown for steady Unstoppable uptime.
  5. 5
Boss phase Stand still mid-channel. Pop War Cry burst window. Single-target hits stack from all four weapon slots after the LoH scaling rework.

Mercenaries

See the Mercenary guide for the full breakdown. Quick recommendation:

  • Hired: Varyana — kill-stack damage scaling fits the AoE-heavy playstyle, plus her Movement Speed aura helps if you're not running Charge.
  • Reinforcement: Aldkin — passive Slow application on packs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Whirlwind Barbarian good in Season 13?

Yes — Whirlwind sits at S on the Barbarian endgame tier list. The Lord of Hatred channeling rework, the new Bursting upgrade node (converts Whirlwind damage to Fire), and the Gohr's Devastating Grips overhaul combine to make Whirlwind one of the strongest Barbarian builds in the expansion.

When can I start playing Whirlwind?

Level 15. With Lord of Hatred, Whirlwind can now freely spawn Dust Devils on its own once you reach level 15, which means the iconic Dust Devils playstyle is available much sooner than in any prior season — no need to wait for endgame uniques.

Why does Ramaladni's Magnum Opus matter?

Ramaladni's Magnum Opus was reworked in Lord of Hatred. Its bonus now applies to ANY skill, not just skills using the weapon. That lets you wield a 2H weapon for Whirlwind's scaling and still benefit from Ramaladni's damage multiplier — previously you had to choose one or the other.

Is this build viable for Echoing Hatred?

Yes, it is one of the best Echoing Hatred picks. The Overwhelm bar tracks live enemy count, and Whirlwind plus Dust Devils chews through dense packs continuously. Pair with Tibault's Will charm, Iron Skin, and shouts for survivability through the late tiers.
