Lord Zir — Boss Guide

By the DiabloBytes team · Updated May 2026

Lord Zir is the vampire-themed Lair Boss — three escalating phases with the signature Phase 3 Blood Rain detonation that reactivates every existing blood puddle simultaneously. Bloodseeker adds apply status ailments mid-fight, and a Wing Blast at 66% HP forces a clean dodge. Drops include Fields of Crimson and Fang of the Vipermagi.

⚡ TL;DR

  • Location: Ancient\'s Seat, The Darkened Way.
  • Summon cost: 1 Lair Key at the Bloodied Altar.
  • Phase 3 (~30%): All existing blood puddles detonate simultaneously. Burn fast or clear them.
  • Drops: Fields of Crimson, Fang of the Vipermagi.

Fight Mechanics

Phase Mechanic How to Handle
Phase 1 Vampiric melee Lord Zir engages with vampire claw swipes and short-range bites. Standard melee dodging — sidestep around him to avoid the cone hits.
Phase 1 Blood Rain Hunches down and flaps wings to release blood projectiles. Watch where they land, sidestep into a clear gap before they pool. The puddles persist and can chain into the Phase 3 detonation.
Phase 2 (~66%) Wing Blast Teleports away from you and charges a powerful wing blast — heavy damage + knockback. Run perpendicular to his charge direction; never run away in a straight line because the blast catches up.
Phase 2 Bloodseekers Summons vampire add minions that have their own class-skills and apply status ailments (Slow, Stun, Bleed). Cleave them down or stun-lock them with CC — they're mid-tier in HP but the debuffs they apply make survival harder.
Phase 3 (~30%) Blood Rain detonation New variant of Blood Rain. The first wing flap creates puddles like normal — but subsequent flaps activate ALL existing puddles on the field at once, firing blood missiles in sync from each one. The longer the fight runs, the worse this gets. Burn him sub-30% fast or clear puddles aggressively.
Throughout Tracking blood pools Lord Zir summons blood pools at your position on a regular cadence. They Slow + Poison anything that walks through. Fire blood missiles in sync with his other attacks — basically each pool is a passive turret.

Best Builds for Lord Zir

Whirlwind Barbarian

Stand inside his hitbox to ignore Wing Blast positioning. Iron Skin tanks Bloodseeker debuffs without breaking rotation.

Ball Lightning Sorcerer

Burst him below 30% before the Blood Rain detonation phase becomes overwhelming. Top single-target DPS in the game makes Phase 3 manageable.

Penetrating Shot Rogue

Shadow Step around Wing Blast. Cold Imbuement freezes Bloodseekers solid — resolves the add-pressure mechanic.

Apocalypse Warlock

Apocalypse pulse cleaves Bloodseekers continuously. Demonform burst window for Phase 2 wing blast recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I fight Lord Zir in Lord of Hatred?

The Ancient's Seat in The Darkened Way region. Interact with the Bloodied Altar and spend 1 Lair Key to open the encounter and Hoard chest. Lord Zir has a higher gear floor than Varshan / Grigoire.

How do I get Lair Keys?

Lair Keys are earned from endgame activities (Whisper rewards, Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons, Lair Boss Hoards). They are the universal entry currency for Lair-tier bosses in the current system.

How does the Phase 3 Blood Rain detonation work?

At ~30% HP, Lord Zir's Blood Rain attack changes. The first wing flap creates puddles as usual. The next 1-2 flaps activate ALL existing puddles on the field simultaneously — each one fires a blood missile at your location. Result: the longer the fight has run, the more puddles exist, the more missiles fire on each detonation. Burn fast or clear puddles aggressively.

Are the Bloodseekers worth focus-killing?

Yes if you can spare AoE rotation. They each apply status ailments (Slow, Stun, Bleed) on hit, and the stacked debuffs trivialize Lord Zir's damage past Phase 2. Strong AoE-cleave builds (Whirlwind, Apocalypse, Penetrating Shot) handle them passively while staying on the boss. Single-target builds (Wing Strikes, classic FoH) need to swap targets manually.

What is Tormented Lord Zir?

Tormented Lord Zir requires a Stygian Stone in addition to the standard summon cost. Same mechanics, higher HP and damage. Tormented kill grants 1 Resplendent Spark, doubles Unique drop rolls, and unlocks the Mythic Unique loot table.
