Duriel, King of Maggots — Boss Guide

By the DiabloBytes team · Updated May 2026

Duriel is the second classic uber boss in Diablo 4, sharing top-tier Mythic Unique loot table with Andariel. The fight is poison-heavy from open to close — two add-summoning maggots spawn before Duriel even emerges, and his entire kit applies stacking Poison DoT on top of physical hits. The burrow phase at 50% HP can reposition him across the arena while throwing fresh maggot waves at you.

⚡ TL;DR

  • Location: Gaping Crevasse, Hawezar.
  • Summon cost: 1 Greater Lair Key.
  • Bring an Elixir of Poison Resistance. Saves your potions for actual healing.
  • Phase 1: Burn maggot adds first. Avoid Claw Slash cone, dodge perpendicular to charges.
  • Drops: Rage of Harrogath, Fractured Runestone, Mythic Uniques.

Fight Mechanics

Phase Mechanic How to Handle
Open Maggot adds spawn first Duriel does not engage immediately — two add-summoning maggots emerge from the ground hole and continuously fire poison projectiles. Burn them before Duriel arrives or you take stacking poison damage from minute one.
Phase 1 Claw Slash combo Three-hit cone swipe directly in front of Duriel. Stuns on the final hit. Always position behind or to his flank — never tank a slash combo head-on.
Phase 1 Poison projectile salvo Fans poison projectiles in a wide arc that leave lingering poison pools. Pools stack and overlap — bad positioning corners you in unwalkable ground.
Phase 1 Charge attack Wind-up animation telegraphs a straight-line charge across the arena. Evade perpendicular to his path.
Phase 2 Burrow Burrow + elite minions When the fight runs long, Duriel burrows underground and summons two elite Duriel minion variants. Clear them quickly. He re-emerges from a new hole bringing a swarm of poison-shooting maggots.
Throughout Maggot waves Periodic maggot waves continue throughout. Weak individually but their poison damage adds up. AoE-cleave builds keep the arena clean; single-target builds need to interrupt their boss damage to clear.

Best Builds for Duriel

Whirlwind Barbarian

Stand on the boss hitbox. Dust Devils tear through maggot adds while Whirlwind hits Duriel. Ignore positioning entirely thanks to Iron Skin + shouts.

Ball Lightning Sorcerer

Orbital ring inside the boss. The build chews maggot adds incidentally while pumping single-target DPS into Duriel.

Penetrating Shot Rogue

Shoot through Duriel hitting the maggot adds behind him. Cold Imbuement freezes everything in the projectile line.

Apocalypse Warlock

Apocalypse pulse handles maggot waves. Use Demonform window for the Phase 2 burrow re-emerge burst.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Duriel located in Diablo 4?

Echo of Duriel's summoning altar is in the Gaping Crevasse, accessible via the waypoint in southern Hawezar. Interact with the altar and spend 1 Greater Lair Key to open the encounter and Hoard chest after the kill. Tormented variant requires an additional Stygian Stone.

How do I get Greater Lair Keys?

Greater Lair Keys are earned from endgame activities (Whisper rewards, Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons, Lair Boss Hoards). They are the universal entry currency for Greater-tier bosses in the current system.

Why does the fight start with adds?

Two add-summoning maggots spawn from the central hole at fight open before Duriel emerges. They continuously fire poison projectiles. If you ignore them, you eat unavoidable poison damage stacking on top of Duriel's own poison kit. Burn them down first — they're weak in HP, just numerous.

Should I bring a Poison Resistance elixir?

Yes. Almost every Duriel attack applies Poison damage on top of physical hits. An Elixir of Poison Resistance massively cuts the DoT pressure and prevents your healing potions from being burned just to recover from poison ticks. Cheap to craft, big QoL boost.

How does the burrow phase work?

Around 50% HP, if the fight has dragged on, Duriel burrows underground and summons two elite Duriel minions. Burn them fast — they hit hard and apply Poison. He re-emerges from a new hole position with a fresh maggot wave. The new position can put him on the opposite side of the arena, so be ready to relocate during the burrow window.

Is Tormented Duriel solo-able as a fresh level-100 character?

Standard difficulty: yes, with any meta build. Tormented: requires solid Mythic uniques and either high mobility or built-in Poison Resistance. Wing Strikes Paladin and Whirlwind Barb are the safest first-attempt picks. Squishier builds (Sorcerer, Warlock) want a Raheir mercenary and pre-fight Poison Resistance elixir.
